MEME OF FOURS....Via Roy, here's another silly but (as usual) oddly compelling internet list meme:
Four jobs you've had in your life: Radio Shack manager, technical writer, product manager, VP of marketing.
Four movies you could watch over and over: Star Wars, Office Space, Monty Python and the Holy Grail, The Wizard of Oz.
Four places you've lived: Garden Grove, CA; Kge, Denmark; Pasadena, CA; Irvine, CA.
Four TV shows you love to watch: The Daily Show, Lost, The Simpsons, USC football (when they're playing well).
Four places you've been on vacation: Rome; Cerro Gordo, IL; Katowice, Poland; Solvang, CA.
Four websites you visit daily: The usuals: Atrios, Kos, Marshall, the New York Times, plus a cast of thousands of others.
Four of your favorite foods: Chocolate, popcorn, hamburgers, chocolate.
Four places you'd rather be: Um....permanently? I really like Southern California a lot. [UPDATE: You mean just to visit? In that case: Bryan's Pit Barbecue, New York City, Highway 1, anyplace with lots of friendly cats.]
Since the proprietor of Hullabaloo remains so resolutely mysterious, perhaps Digby will pick up this meme next.

OK, I thought I had been _everywhere_ in Illinois, but I had to googlemap Cerro Gordo. Turns out I _have_ been there (or at least driven through), but I didn't know it. Chalk one up for Kevin.
Did you visit the Montecello Railway Museum? If not, be sure to go there next time and also stop at the Brown Bag Resturant in "downtown" Montecello for a slice of Pie by Inge. The best fruit pie in the world by far.

Scientific method of cooking a turkey,
http://www.physorg.com/news9327.html
"The connective tissues (collagen, reticulin and elastin) that join the muscles to the bone and wrap around the muscle fibre bundles, are too tough for us to bite through (and remain largely indigestible) before they are heated. However, after prolonged heating to a temperature above 60C the collagen triple helices are destroyed and tough collagen becomes soft gelatin. Accordingly there must be a compromise between overheating the muscle fibres and producing a tough product, and not heating enough to denature the collagen, which would again leave tough meat."

Places I've lived: Madison, WI; Monroe, NY; Kilburn, London; Novato, CA.

four places you've lived: my car, Madison, WI, a universe that is the inside of an airplane flying somewhere through eternity, middle part and right side of US.
four tv shows you love to watch: I really don't like tv, even tv I like. Real life is in a thin zone between The L Word and Futurama. Everything else is error.
four places you've been on vacation: When I was a kid we went to Yellowstone. As we were going through the sulphur pit I had to have a whiz like there was no tomorrow, so I climbed off the boardwalk and went behind this huge sulfphur dune. As I'm letting out a great sigh of relief I realized the ground all around was covered with these little tiny lizards and I'm urinating all over them and they're all going 'gaa!Urrr!Gakk!', because nobody had ever done that to them before. When my Dad found out about it he said he'd never take me anywhere again, and didn't.

There are not too many of us, though there are some natural connections between New Haven and La Jolla. If you google the two cities my name does not come up, but pages with many of my professional friends do.
New Haven has had a bad rep over the years, but it is a good place to live overall. Great restaurants.

"Solvang, CA."
If you grew up in southern California, that was the place mom and dad took made you go when relatives (especially aunts) were visiting. Once, back in the 90s, my friends and I went to see Sleater-Kinney play in the Bay Area. Opening up for them was this queer, Asian, girl band from Solvang. I tried to explain to my friends what Solvang was, but they had difficulty reconciling my description with this particular musical outfit.
Posted by: Blue Nomad on December 24, 2005 at 3:51 PM | PERMALINK
And if Solvang doesn't interest you, go in the opposite direction off 101 and head to Buellton for pea soup.
