BREMER ON RUMSFELD....Anybody who writes a memoir obviously has a considerable incentive to try to make himself look good. And when you were the guy in charge of a debacle like the occupation of Iraq, you really, really have an incentive to try to make yourself look good.

That said, Paul Bremer is apparently pretty clear in My Year in Iraq that he and Colin Powell were the real hawks in Iraq hawk being defined here as someone who actually wanted to win, as opposed to someone who just wanted to test out pet theories of military transformation. The Weekly Standard has a series of excerpts demonstrating that Bremer and Powell (a) wanted more troops in Iraq and (b) wanted to gain control of the insurgency, while Rumsfeld just wanted to get the hell out.

Perhaps someday Rumsfeld will write his own book. I can't wait.

UPDATE: Think Progress illustrates Bremer's strenuous efforts to make himself look good here. It's a pretty safe bet that no one is coming out of this debacle with his reputation intact.

I just finished listening to The Scorpion's Gate. Clarke really hates Rumsfeld and Wolfowitz. Wow!

First, the update on ID. Now, this. If you did an updated post on Brokeback Mountain, the wingnuts would be in full sturm und drang.

Wait, Von Rumsfeld wanted to cut and run? Is he with us or against us?

Well, maybe that's not exactly the right question...

Bremer's claim that he dissolved the Iraqi army because he didn't see the insurgency coming makes me think he's as credible as Condi "nobody could have predicted that anyone would use airplanes as weapons" Rice.

Wait till Douglas Feith's and Steve Combone's memoirs come out. The brilliant Feith and the humanitarian Combone will take Bremer to the cleaners for his unsubstaniated and self-serving allegations.

Maybe he just wasn't expecting some wingnut to say "Bring it on!"

The only hope Bush ever had of turning the tide in Iraq was to ax Rumsfeld. Why couldn't he just say heckuva job Rummy and let him go?

Posted by: may on January 11, 2006 at 1:27 PM | PERMALINK

Powell was a hawk? I think that he was just a pigeon, puffed up and gloating about how the entire Iraq debacle was reinforcing the Powell doctrine. What good is a doctrine if you don't stand up for it. Standing his ground would have proven that he was a real hawk. All I see are feathers blowing in the wind.

Speaking of Gates, In reading Assassin's Gate by George Packer, one would learn that the administration had planned to be on its way out of Iraq beginning in August of 2003.

In that case, though self-serving, Bremer's comments carry a nugget of truth. Rumsfeld did want out of Iraq that quickly.

Bush should never have put State Department in charge while hostilities were still in progress. Beamer was and is an ass with no appreciation of war.

Posted by: Walter E. Wallis on January 11, 2006 at 1:44 PM | PERMALINK

I think Rumsfeld bought into Wolfowitz (flowers and sweets) and Feith that we'd win this in a walk, and saw Iraq as a laboratory to test his new ideas for a light, agile, technologically advanced military.

Of course, once he got hip-deep in elephant dung, he had mo other choice.

It's a pretty safe bet that no one is coming out of this debacle with his reputation intact.

Given that the events of Bush's Excellent Iraqi Adventure have proven that Colin Powell was absolutely right in his perception of the risks in taking Baghdad in '91, he might have done, but he totally blew it with his odious performance in front of the UN, peddling what he knew to be half-truths at best in order to sell a war he disagreed with.

Considering Colin Powell's complicity in the My Lai massacre in Viet Nam, it isn't surprising that he wanted more boots on the throat, I mean on the ground, in Iraq. Turn up the brutality on a civilian population a few notches and everything will be hunky-dory, eh, Colin? And they almost gave this creep a Nobel Peace Prize? Puh-leeze.

From reading about Paul (Jerry?) Bremer, it is clear he is also a sociopathic egotist, like so many neocons, that can't or won't accept the consequences of their actions. Half a million troops to do what - Force democracy down the Iraqis gullets?!?

There is likely a very warm corner of Hell awaiting both of these reptiles.

At the end of the Iraq war, vast sums of money were made available to the US-led provisional authorities, headed by Paul Bremer, to spend on rebuilding the country. By the time Bremer left the post eight months later, $8.8bn of that money had disappeared. Ed Harriman on the extraordinary scandal of Iraq's missing billions..

So, Mr Bremer, where did all the money go? :

Perhaps someday Rumsfeld will write his own book.

Titled, perhaps, "The Prison Years: Life on The Inside"

Posted by: --- on January 11, 2006 at 2:15 PM | PERMALINK

I read the Bremer book today. Even by the standard of ghost-written cash-in-quick political memoirs, it is awful -- and that's a literary assessment, not an ideological one. For example, when Bremer was considering whether or not to take the job, he reports that his wife said, "If anyone can do it, you can." Bremer then relates this "touching" anecdote:

"Now, I'm no softy, but when Francie said that it brought a tear to me eye."

Okay, like totally gag me with a spoon.

An audiobook might be tolerable, so long as its not read by Bremer, but the actual thing on paper is just stupefying. There's no deep insight, no new revelations, just a lot of inside baseball, the deployment of manly adjectives to describe various military and civilian personnel (he was "tough," she was "clear-headed"), and -- of course -- the not-at-all-thinly-disguised self-aggrandizement and excuses.

The only thing, in short, that makes Bremer's book just slightly less awful than, say, Bill Clinton's is that it is 1/3 the length of BC's.

Well, you'd think so, wouldn't you? But remember who's in charge. In today's GOP/corporate-think, as long as you held a powerful position, you put it on your CV and it's impressive. That you were a total screw-up doesn't even enter the picture.

Bremer will have no trouble for years to come getting high-paying "consultant" jobs in Washington. Same goes for just about anyone else in Bush's comedy troupe. The only "reputation" that matters is that you be a member of the Faith.

During the American Civil War it was McClellan not Grant who always asked for more troops, but it was Grant not McClellan who really wanted to win.

In the Korean War you could make a similar contrast between MacArthur and Ridgeway.

Demanding more troops than are needed is simply a stalling strategy, an unwillingness to commit. On this issue, Powell was wrong and Rumsfeld was right. Had they waited for 3 times as many ground troops, they'd be waiting still, and Saddam Husseing would still be in power, and Hans Blix would be writing more reports about how the Iraqis were not in compliance with UNSC resolutions (but the Iraqis at the low levels were cooperating daily). The Iraqi elections of 2005 would never have happened, and there would be no argument among the Sunnis which Baathists deserve to regain power through elections.

Posted by: contentious on January 11, 2006 at 3:46 PM | PERMALINK

yeah, and 2000 americans would be alive, tens of thousand of iraqis, thousands of americans would have arms and legs and minds that worked, and we wouldn't be on course for spending upwards of $1 trillion so that Bush could display his big weener for all the world to see.

You're right, Rumsfeld really got the job done.

If we had more troops, maybe we would have been able to quell the insurgency before it started.

Hans Blix would be writing more reports about how the Iraqis were not in compliance with UNSC resolutions

Newsflash: there were no WMD. The sanctions worked.

Demanding more troops than are needed...

Where the hell did you conjure this?

Saddam controlled his borders and was a threat only to Iraqi's, not us. (This wasn't our fight, remember?)

There were no WMD.

No Iraqi's were on any of the planes that were hijacked on Sept. 11 (most were Saudi, but we didn't attack them, did we?)

The sanctions worked, and Bush got impatient with the inspectors because he wanted to go to war even before the 2000 election, and if they finished the job he wouldn't get to whip it out for a pissing contest.

I can't find the link now, but I recall that before the invasion was launched, Bush 41 called 43 and told him he would destabilize the entire middle east and pissed W off so bad he hung up on Poppy.

Right. And we all well remember how long it took to get Pyonyang to settle down, during the occupation of North Korean.

As far as Grant and McClellan are concerned, one could argue that the victor eventually did cut and run -- about a decade after Appomattox, and on our own soil. Are you really sure you want to keep going with that analogy? It won't help the case you're trying to make, in whole or in part.

Your historical comparisons are every bit as lame and disingenuous as Rice's idiotic essays comparing the Iraq to the 1945 occupation of Germany and Japan. The situations have practically nothing in common.

And, of course, contentious' argument seeks to assert that the extra troops weren't necessary, when, of course, our inability to contain the insurgency suggests that they were.

Honestly, it truly, truly baffles me that so-called conservatives -- a school of thought that used to pride itself on cost-benefit analysis -- point to only the perceived benefits of Bush's Iraqi Adventure with nary a word about the costs (as craigie observed).

But then again, why not? With no draft, fat tax cuts and a stubborn refusal to recognize the decline of American power, influence and security, as far as they're concerned they aren't paying any costs, are they?

"It's a pretty safe bet that no one is coming out of this debacle with his reputation intact."

Wrong. My reputation is fine.

So is the reputation of the other reality-based folks - most of the world - who knew from the moment it was proposed in 2002 that Bush/Iraq was the stupidest foreign policy intiative the US government would ever undertake.

Sorry the rest of you were taken for suckers. Maybe you've learned something, but given how angry you are at those of us who got it right, I doubt it.

Posted by: tristero on January 11, 2006 at 8:04 PM | PERMALINK

Hmmm, let me see - MacArthur pulls an end around move at Inchon, cuts the enemy in two, drives the enemy north to the Yalu, wants to keep going and use nukes, if necessary, gets driven back when sloppy intelligence fails to find all of the Chinese in the world waiting to push him back south, gets relieved, Ridgeway takes over and he and Walter E Wallis fight them to a stale mate. Something missing here about "who wanted to fight"?

Must peruse the new book, "Upside down history by Contentious".

McAnustotle: Newsflash: and now we know for sure he has no WMD. The war worked.

The Bush administration knew that for sure before the invasion.

Your implicit lies about this notwithstanding.

Besides, the war was, according to Bush, to secure WMDs known to exist, when in fact they did not exist and we did not "know" that they existed, but rather "knew" that they didn't, and no WMDs were in fact secured.

Your revisionist history notwithstanding.

But thanks for proving what a McAnus you are yet again.
