I WONDER HOW MUCH THIS JOB PAYS?....A reader who followed my link to the K Street Project website last night emailed to point out the following item on its front page. Does the Department of Labor really have a Special Assistant for Conservative Outreach? Do they also have a Special Assistant for Liberal Outreach?

I suppose I could call and ask, but maybe someone will do it for me if I post this. Inquiring minds want to know.

Wouldn't "Union-Busting Thug" be a more economical job title?

Now now -- it's not affirmative action when Daddy is a big donor to the Republican party. It's just good bidness to find his kid a nice new sinecure somewhere when she reaches her mid-30s and starts to feel silly calling herself a "Young Leader."

Not to worry, Kevin. By "conservative outreach" they mean they want to reach out to people with labor needs, but not much.

Posted by: Robert S. on January 12, 2006 at 3:24 PM | PERMALINK

When they reach out to conservatives, they stroke them.

When they reach out to the liberals they grab them by the throat and squeeze.

The way to tame inflation is upon the backs of the working class, Courtesy of Dept Labor reaching out to conservatives.

Squeeze working class wages and you tame inflation. Thats reaching out and touching someone.

So can we presume you have no problem with the ethics of this then, Al?

Kevin - are you sure that the "K Street Project" web site isn't a satire site? Do you know for a fact that's real, or did you just find it by googling?

Posted by: dbc on January 12, 2006 at 3:32 PM | PERMALINK

A call to the Dept of Labor yielded nothing, because their main number services only employer/employee issues under their jurisdiction. But the nice lady sent me to the FCIC - I think that's Federal Citizen's Information Center - 1-800-333-4636. Boy are they nice and try to answer all questions about the federal government. Lady chuckled, and when nothing turned up in her data base she checked with a supervisor. Nothing turns up for either the job description or the person. I told her it appeared to be a new job and she said I should call back in about a week to find out what the position entails. Ya gotta love this country...the FCIC...sweethearts...really!

Posted by: brucds on January 12, 2006 at 3:33 PM | PERMALINK

I thought the concept of "outreach" was reserved for marginalized and/or disenfranchised people. That's why you have to "reach out" to them -- because they're far from the powers that be.

How does this apply to conservatives?

Posted by: skimble on January 12, 2006 at 3:34 PM | PERMALINK

I think from the looks of it "K-Street Project" is a watchdog site, not an official site of the bad guys, but neither does it appear to be satire. If it's satire, it's the least funny satire I've ever seen.

Hey, Kevin, let's have a post on manners and ettiquette as per Ted Kennedy.

Let's also have a post on how the Democrats on the Senate Judiciary Committee totally embarrassed themselves and their party in their attempt to smear Alito so that they could keep in good graces with the MoveOn faction of the Democratic Party, and how in so doing they appreciably hurt their party's chances in November.

Let's have a post on common courtesy; how the Democratic senators on the committee (with the exception of Feinstein) couldn't even muster the courtesy of listening to pro-Alito witnesses in the hearings. So much for the pretense of having an open mind.

The Democrats have a closed mind and that will continue the death spiral the party has been on since 1972.

That just reinforces the hypothesis that liberal bias has become so rampant in the major centers of academia that put upon conservatives have to be creative in their courses of study in out-of-the-way universities in order to be free of said bias... or some such.

Posted by: Robert S. on January 12, 2006 at 4:40 PM | PERMALINK

Are you guys ignorant, naive -- or impressively cynical? I dunno as there is a fourth choice.

EVERY patronage machine has an enforcer job, and a big one will also have a liaison gig. The job of the enforcer is to go to the folks who get paid off to make sure they remember the quid for the pro quo. Ya know, Kenny O'Donnell getting you on the phone and asking how your nephew is doing on the highway department road crew, then asking if you've got your lawn signs for the primary next month, cuz Jack is really counting on you.

The liaison person is a communications channel and recruits for jobs. If you (or your family) are loyal soldiers for the regime, you get dibs on paying gigs on the inside. (That nephew on the road crew.)

This was as true for Tammany Hall, for the John King regime in Bridgeport, for Daley in Chicago, Honey Fitz in Boston -- or for JFK, no less than for W.

There is a kind of candor about the job being "conservative outreach". (I might have called it "special projects", and I bet somebody has.)

Want cynicism? The great advantage of democracy is that it spreads corruption THINLY. Old political pros used to have a button they'd wear the day after an election: "Nice job, kid. Now get lost." Lord knows, after Mike Brown alone the Bush administration can't make much of an argument for competence.

But the idea that a political party that has won the right to appoint thousands of its own to patronage jobs would NOT (or would somehow be unethical in having) a liaison person in the right place for each part of the machine, is just stoooopid.

There are a zillion things wrong with the K Street project, but this ain't one of 'em.

It looks to me that one of their anonymous tips was actually a prank and they published it by mistake. I can't find anything about a Special Assistant for Conservative Outreach at the Dept of Labor.

Lynn Gibson is in charge of helping get conservatives positions in public policy with the Heritage Foundation Job Bank.

theAmericanist, I agree with your analysis up to a point. And that point is, we're supposed to root out these sorts of machines once we're aware of it.

I don't think anybody should tolerate Democratic machines anymore than Republican machine, ceterus paribus. But when it comes to the K street project, ceterus ain't paribus!

But in any case I think it's a legitimate point that Kevin has in this post. And the brazen arrogance that emanates from the title "Conservative Outreach" is too much. It's a clear example of the victim mentality that the uber-powerful on the Right seem to have. Somehow, despite controlling all three branches of government and pretty much the entire economy they still feel victimized by the Left. My what fragile flowers these rightwingers be!

Yes, I especially liked the open-mindedness displayed by Lindsay Graham and other Repub senators who met with Alito prior to the questioning and coached him on what and how to answer.

An open mind? You must be fucking kidding me. Kennedy and others may have grilled Alito, which is their right -- but the Republicans fellated him.

Posted by: trex on January 12, 2006 at 5:33 PM | PERMALINK

...but the Republicans fellated him.

You must be talking about the steaming pile of dung, the embarrassment that is John Cornyn. Cornyn proclaimed Sandra O'Conner as the "model justice" and mainstream, then brought out some chart, compared righty decisions of O'Connor with Scalito, and voila that MUST mean that Scalito is a mainstream, model justice. Right? Right?

He then followed up with typical Cornyn hard hitting questions like "Gosh, you're just a really peachy keen justice aren't you Mr. Alito?" and "My, my, you do have a large penis don't you Mr. Alito?"

Like all the Bush bootlickers, "howie" is just mechanically regurgitating the scripted, programmed RNC talking points. He's just another brain-dead neo-brownshirt mental slave, obediently cutting and pasting.

Having said that, there is absolutely no reason to have an "open mind" about Alito. The man is a bought-and-paid for shill for right-wing corporate power, period.

Posted by: Jonathanc on January 12, 2006 at 8:16 PM | PERMALINK

Ask a sensible question: What's wrong with a political machine?

Oh, it's "corrupt". It's "wrong". But when you think about it, that's the OPPOSITE of thinking.

It's a reasonable criticism of progressives to note that when we get power, we hand out the same patronage jobs to former campaign staff, union officials, think tank types and people who used to work for letterheads with foundation grants.

That "conservatives" hand 'em out to, well, former campaign staff, corporate officials, think tank types, and people who used to work for letterheads with foundation grants doesn't exactly make our critique BITING, ya know what I'm sayin?

A better criticism was made to me once by a ranking government bureaucrat, who explained that in his experience, Democrats would come in with better policies but no clue how to manage their implementation, while Republicans had bad policies but could get things done.

Which doesn't exactly explain Michael Brown, but DOES get at what IS wrong with "political machines" -- and, again, this ain't it.

The key is ACCOUNTABILITY. Goo-goo guys tend to complain about patronage, but the fact is, democracy is made up of rewards. Hell -- look at all the guys who've gone through Harvard, and the Monthly, and wound up with big media jobs: like this kind of education, training and networking is so different from "conservative outreach"?

The Chinese call it "guanxi".

But if a machine is so powerful (or so inefficient, which is much the same thing) that it isn't accountable for failing to shovel the snow or bury the garbage -- or keep its coalition together -- then it can't last.

Don't kid yourselves: it won't be replaced by the illuminati. Progressives will do the same patronage as conservatives -- the only question is if we will be merely expensive about it (wasteful, make work jobs)or actually counterproductive. But for there to be somebody at the Labor Department recruiting union busters for a Republican administration?

What did you THINK American elections are FOR?

Well, if indeed Ms. Gibson HAS landed a new gig, she'd best put on her thinking cap PDQ. Maryland legislature, overriding the Gov's veto, has passed legislation requiring employers of more than 10K to pay at least 8% toward employee health care, to keep workers off the state's Medicaid rolls. At present, there are four such employers in MD, three of which have always contributed far more to employees' coverage; ergo,
THIS MEANS YOU, WalMart:)

From a corporate viewpoint, all you have to do is to fire a few people so you employ 9,999.
Or better yet, restructure so all the persons are not in one firm.

Another well-meaning legislation founded in stupidity.
