In 1999, Reed e-mailed Abramoff after submitting a bill for $120,000 and warning that he would need as much as $300,000 more: "We are opening the bomb bays and holding nothing back."

One of the most damaging e-mails was sent by Abramoff to partner Michael Scanlon, complaining about Reed's billing practices and expenditure claims: "He is a bad version of us! No more money for him."

Democrats have done a poor job thus far using these revelations to seperate themselves from the Republicans. Specifically, the Dems have failed to differentiate money coming directly from Abramoff and/or his firm that went to Republicans from money some of the firm's clients gave to Democrats. It's a big difference.

Indian tribes were making campaign contributions to Democrats, like Dan Inouye who is the ranking member of his party on the Subcommittee on Indian Affairs, long before Abramoff, Scanlon and the rest were on the scene.

Maybe the distinction is hard to make, especially on television where most voters get their info and impressions of politicians. Unfortunately, as long as Republicans can continue to say everyone was doing it, it will be difficult to convince the public that the "culture of corruption" is a Republican phenomenon. Only the small universe of voters who read the WaPo and a handful of similar papers will get it.

Am I missing something ridiculously obvious here? IN the first three paragraphs of the WaPo story, we have Ralph Reed being asked point-blank at a county Republican Party meeting:

"Did you accept any gifts, commissions or other payments of any kind from Mr. Abramoff, and are you likely to be a party in the unfolding investigation?"

Silence enveloped the 60 or so Republicans in the auditorium, and Reed's cheerful manner turned tense. "No," he replied. "No to all these."

Which, as the story documents, is a complete and irrefutable bald-faced lie. How the hell did anyone in that room buy it? Why didn't they come after him immediately with torches and pitchforks? What am I missing here?

It doesn't matter if Ralphie lies. He is one of God's chosen. Just ask him. In his world view, since he is already forgiven there is nothing he can't do to affirm God's love for him.

To some Calvinistic "born again" types we are all just sheep to be humped.

Carlton, Ralphie would probably tell you that whether he is lying all depends on what your definition of "you" is. If "you" means him personally, maybe he didn't lie. If "you " means his "small business" through which he funneled money to himself then clearly he did.

My question is -

Was Ralph Reed, the politician, rather than Ralph Reed, a religious right wanker, a creation of Abramoff's money and influence or does Reed have some standing outside of Abramoff's influence?

Third worst practice, secret "fact finding" meetings with industry leaders. Fourth worst practice, putting a bill up for a vote without letting anybody have more than 30 minutes to read it. Listening to Bruce Fein (conservative, Republican, lawyer) make the case that Bush's actions in regard to the NSA fiasco is "illegal" at worst and unnecessary as well. This from the "rule of law" (HA, HA) party...interesting how try to paint themselves given that they are considering for house leadership a representative that was caught handing out checks before a critical vote some time back (admitted)...course now he wants to be forgiven and considered for this ethical post...again, HA, HA!!! HYPOCRITES...

Also OT, but yesterday had a conversation with a neighbor who just KNOWS that Al Queda was being trained in a "whole city" in Iraq before the invasion, and so believes that BUSH did the right thing AND, where have I heard this before, things are going well there (schools and hospitals being built)...he KNOWS there was a "whole city training terrorists" because of his previous job (where he had TOP SECRET clearance)with a company that had contact over there...he just has no way to prove it! YEAH, like I believe that...the sad thing is the guy is from NH...I just missed the opportunity to ask him how often he watches FOX NEWS and/or listens to Limplips...

One thing we can look forward to now: if Blunt succeeds Delay, we can transition from the Hammer to the Blunt Object. Hilarity and further scandals ensue!

There's a general catharsis among Dems that all these GOP scandals are automatically beneficial to the DFL, as if the political arena was a zero-sum game.

It's a false safety net. The GOP message machine is more than strong enough to overcome these scandals, as long as the DFL continues to offer nothing more than criticism.

Exactly. I am incredulous whenever I hear the lament 'Democrats haven't done everything possible to separate themselves...etc...' Every liberal and progressive must keep in mind that Democrats DON'T have the same messaging machine in place. No matter what you have heard, the NYTimes (other than some of the Op Eds) is NOT on their side. They are currently at around 20% of the signal strength of the Republican machine. This is a problem and will continue to be as long as Democrats fail to attack these institutions for the partisan machines that they are. For that brief period in the 90s when Democrats were in power, the Republican machine was still able to out shout them consistently and effectively, changing the subject and making Clinton react. Heck, he probably got part of his 'spin' reputation from necessarily reacting to Republican messaging, constantly changing the subject away from the national interest onto something attack-worthy.

I have seen very little, other than blogs and similar shouting out the window, that addresses this disparity and disadvantage. This messaging machine has changed the rules and it is unlikely that, no matter how much Republicans F**K up our country, Democrats will be able to gain much advantage. Seriously, people, haven't you all wondered why we seem to be unable to gain any positive public opinion from all these disasters? I keep thinking to myself ... if all this had happened under Clinton's watch, he would be sitting in a prison cell right now with half of his staff. What is the obvious difference here?

Democrats must either decide to set up some bullsh*t newspapers of their own, or make the decision that someone like Reverend Moon should emphatically NOT have the capability to make his voice heard over the Brookings institution.

You are being asked to view the Democrats as the good guys here because in this particular instance they are the good guys. Abramoff is entirely a Republican scandal, not because all Democrats are pure as the driven snow, but because the Republican leadership in the Congress (think Newt Gingrich, Tom Delay, Denny Hastart and Roy Blunt)changed the rules to completly squeeze Democrats out of the legislative process. Thru the K-Street Project they changed the way lobbying is done. If you want to play in the current lobbying environment you have to pay legal and illegal bribes to the Republicans and especially the Republican National Committee. You have to employ the children and wives of Republican congressmen if you want anything done. All things that have been done in the past, you say. The difference is that the Republicans have organized the corruption on a scale unimagined at least since the days of reconstruction. These crooks have no shame and no love of their country.

Schaudenfreud is taking pleasure from the misfortunes of others. This case is not about schaudenfreud, it is about the feckless Democratic leadership who is smacking their lips while Congress burns. The DLC knows that the substance of reform means more than "Democratic Kontrol". Shame on them.

Just exactly what have the Democrats done to subvert democracy?

I agree that the Democrats don't gain any credibility until they come out strong, strong, strong for real reform, but I have yet to see what the Democrats have done in this case to deserve the scorn you want to heap upon them.

The Abramoff scandal is a Republican scandal. It is also an institutional scandal. It will take all of us to fix. My fear is that a few bad apples (DeLay, Ney etc) will go to jail, but the corrupt organization of Congress will remain unchanged. Given the response to this scandal in the house and senate, it is clear that the Republicans have no desire to seek the institutional reforms necessary to solve the problem. Those reforms would require the Republicans to eliminate the entrenched institutional corruption upon which they all depend. Short a third party, only the Democrats have a chance to give voice to real reform. That is why we should all be screaming at our leaders to propose and strongly push real reform.

My fear is that at least some members of the Democratic leadership are drooling over the prospect of a K-Street Project in reverse. In that case we should vote the whole damn bunch out.

Republicans are the ones subverting democracy by eliminating the separation of powers, weakening Checks & Balances, etc. However, through Democratic COMPLACENCY, Congress has become gerrymandered into incumbency machines that benefit both parties at the expense of American representative democracy.

By stressing the Republican-ownership of the scandal, Democrats are trying to shed their culpability, and avoid substantive reform. The more they can blame Republicans, the more likely they'll be able carpet-bag the House, wizened to the successes of the Republican strategists, and eager to pick the poisoned fruits of it.
