THE POWER OF IMAGES....What's this? Photos of George Bush with Jack Abramoff? Time has the scoop:

Time has seen five photographs of Abramoff and the President that suggest a level of contact between them that Bush's aides have downplayed. While Time's source refused to provide the pictures for publication, they are likely to see the light of day eventually because celebrity tabloids are on the prowl for them. And that has been a fear of the Bush team's for the past several months: that a picture of the President with the admitted felon could become the iconic image of direct presidential involvement in a burgeoning corruption scandal like the shots of President Bill Clinton at White House coffees for campaign contributors in the mid-1990s.

Jack Abramoff is a longtime Republican operative who has met with George Bush on numerous occcasions. That's common knowledge. But the power of images is so great that the White House is nearly white with fear that pictures of Bush and Abramoff will eventually show up on the evening news. As well they should be.

You're kidding right?

This smells like a trap -- raising expectations that there are slam-dunk "incriminating pictures" of the two Republicans together. Then...when the pics are released, people yawn.

I want Abramoff to serve hard time prison. I want Bush to leave office in deserved disgrace and dishonor.

But pictures of him shaking hands with Jack Abramoff isn't going to do it.

They know about the power of images. Why do you think they don't want pictures of the returning Iraq war dead. That should have been too far right then, but never underestimate the mushy middle's ability to emutlate an ostrich.

Posted by: SnarkyShark on January 22, 2006 at 3:05 PM | PERMALINK

pictures are going to help. The goal now is to get awareness of this scandal raised to the point where the average american knows about it. Iconic pictures of George with Abramoff will do that.

Its not a knock out blow, but it could be one more shot to the head.

Why the coyness? "Time has seen..." Whoopee. Post 'em, print 'em, or shut up about 'em. Oh, and if the pictures document that Dubya and the Bushmen lied about this, SPELL IT OUT!

Where is tbroz, saying that no matter how corrupt, no matter how incompetent, no matter how many people die from ignoring PDBs or going into a bogus war or ignoring a hurricane, no matter the deficit, as long as tbroz gets a tax cut, he'll support you!

No even 1% of voters could even tell you who Jack Abramhoff is you fools.

The President has his picture taken with lots of shay chracters. I've seen pictures of Dubya with Bill Clinton and Algore.

Photos of George Bush with Jack Abramoff?

That's not evidence that George Bush knew who Jack Abramoff was at all. They were probably just pictures of him shaking hands with people at the annual Christmas party. He shakes hands with lots of people he doesn't know at those parties.

Posted by: Al on January 22, 2006 at 3:19 PM | PERMALINK

As I'm sure Ms. Howell will soon tell us, although thus far there are picture of Bush with Abramoff, there are also pictures of Bush with Democrats. Stay tuned!!!!!

Shouldn't Rove be circulating fake photos of Bush and Abramoff right about now? The MSM will pick them up, they will be "discovered" as fake, and the story will be about how liberal the MSM is. Sound familiar?

"Time has seen pictures?" So print them already. I'm just curious: what source would show the pictures to Time and still refuse to let them be printed? Why?

Posted by: tbrosz on January 22, 2006 at 3:30 PM | PERMALINK

Thanks to Jane at firedoglake I was turned on to this relevent quote by the corrupt Boss Tweed about the cartoons published by Harpers Weekly lampooning him:

"Let's stop them damned pictures," the Boss supposedly said, "I don't care so much what the papers write aboutmy constituents can't readbut damn it, they can see pictures.".

Images have power that can resonate longer and deeper that words. Kennedy in Dallas, a monk immolating himself in protest of the war, marilyn monroe over a subway grate.

Anyone can say anything. But photos are proof, reality.

(say, where are those additional Abu Ghraib prison photos that were supposed to be released? Down the memory hole we go.)

Posted by: merelycurious on January 22, 2006 at 3:35 PM | PERMALINK

"White with fear." Yeah, right. Probably ever since that widely circulated shot of Rumsfeld shaking hands with Saddam resulted in a huge election victory for Kerry in 2004.

Yeah, this'll do about as much damage as that famous photo of Rumsfeld frotting with Saddam Hussein.

Much as I hate to admit it, Patton is right. Most folks don't even pay enough attention to the news to know who Abramoff is.

On the other hand, maybe that'll change as more and more Republicans get indicted.

Who needs Abramoff pictures when we have Bush's Medicare Part D?

HILLIARD, Fla., Jan. 16 - On the seventh day of the new Medicare drug benefit, Stephen Starnes began hearing voices again, ominous voices, and he started to beg for the medications he had been taking for 10 years. But his pharmacy could not get approval from his Medicare drug plan, so Mr. Starnes was admitted to a hospital here for treatment of paranoid schizophrenia.
I love that first sentence. Thanks, Republicans, for MPD!

Question: What happens when some Republican with deep pockets gets these pix and calls the White House for a political favor?

No President of the United States should oughta be vulnerable to blackmail, right?

Perhaps we need the simplest way imaginable to convey the enormity of the disaster that is this presidency to the American people. Everybody remember Dr. Suess? Here we go:

B is for bumbling, bravado and belligerance.

C is for callousness, carpetbagging, corruption, cynical manipulation and corporate carte blanche.

Of course, 99% of your posts proves that you have no shame at all. As I've said before, it's better to hope the Administration be held accountable for its mendacity and incompetence than to celebrate their avoiding being held accountable. I can't really imagine a more un-American attitude.

Remember the doctored pix of Kerry and Jane Fonda at an anti-war rally? Once it was known that the photos were fakes all others subsequently presented were received with a big fat yawn.

Now that the public has demonstrated a willingness to quickly dismiss "photographic evidence" on the heels of a fake, I bet this tactic is being considered, if not actually being planned.

OTOH, the photos described in the Times article may not be the smoking guns that we might hope for. They were taken at fundraising events, so if they are stiffly posed photos, it is arguable that there is not much of a relationship, if any. If they are casually posed, slapping each others' backs or laughing while each tossing back a beverage (or along those lines), then the claim of having "no" relationship will not wash.

Posted by: jcricket on January 22, 2006 at 5:18 PM | PERMALINK

Don't you think the real question should be why TIME would not publish the pictures? Can they possibly say this is not Newsworthy?

I doubt that time has 'em.

Don't get me wrong: I'm sure they exist, but any paper who had these pics would publish.

According to the Senate Intelligence Report, Joe Wilson is a liar and not a particularly good one at that. As the report, starting on p. 39 and going through p. 47 very carefully explains, the claims that Wilson during his media blitz and subsequent canonization as a representative of all that is righteous and pure within anti-war circles were every bit as misleading if not factually inaccurate as anything that one may charge that the administration had done.

Even more so, I would argue, if only for the fact that he was making claims about a number of issues, for example the forged documents referring to Niger, of which he had no actual knowledge - a very polite way of saying that the man was blowing smoke out his ass.

The personal contact with Bush doesn't matter, the point is he was as much a part of Bush's team as Condi Rice, and he has pled to his crimes. This is a criminal administration which has gratefully taken and given bribes, leaked top secret information to smear its enemies, and will soon be repsonsible for the death of as many soldiers in Iraq as the number of civilians that Bin Laden killed in the US. The only naysayers left are Al's and tbrosz's who are still on their payroll. They should be asking themselves where their paycheck will come from after the impeachment.

my response was a parody of another line from "Prufrock". it didn't make a lot of sense, but it sure rhymed, didn't it?

furthermore, "moonbat" is a reference to liberals. we "denigrate clueless joe" in that many of us don't care much for joe lieberman, hence the dis.

Tom DeLay Denies All Charges (As Told by Dr. Suess)

That Abramoff!
That Abramoff!
I do not like that Abramoff!

"Would you like to play some golf?"

I do not want to play some golf.
I do not want to, Abramoff.

"We could fly you there for free.
Off to Scotland, by the sea."

I do not want to fly for free.
I don't like Scotland by the sea.
I do not want to play some golf.
I do not want to, Abramoff.

"Would you, could you, take this bribe?
Could you, would you, for the tribe?"

I would not, could not, take this bribe.
I could not, would not, for the tribe.

"If we strong armed corporations
Into giving you donations?
They'd be funnelled to your PAC.
Would you then cut us some slack?"

I would not, could not, cut you slack.
I do not care about my PAC.
I do not want to play some golf.
I do not want to, Abramoff.

"A plane! A plane! A plane! A plane!
Would you, could you, for a plane?"

I could not, would not, for a plane.
Not for a bribe, not for the tribe.
Not for donations from corporations.
Not for my PAC, not for some slack.
Not from any schmoe named Jack.

"Would you help us buy some ships
Perfect for quick gambling trips?
Talk to people in the know
For a little quid pro quo?
Oh come now, don't be a snob.
Let us give your wife a job."

So passionate is the knee-jerk defense of the far right for Our Leader, that if a photo of Guckert/Gannon and Bush in mid-coitus were to surface, the religious right would just say the two were immunizing themselves against homosexuality.

But the power of images is so great that the White House is nearly white with fear that pictures of Bush and Abramoff will eventually show up on the evening news. As well they should be.

I'm still waiting for Kevin's predictions about a frogmarching Karl Rove to come to pass. Kevin's track record on predictions of imminent Republican collapse isn't exactly impressive.

What the dems need is for an election to coincide with a recession. Economic determinism makes predicting voter behavior quite easy. I was absolutely certain Bush would win reelection in 2004, because incumbent presidents are nigh impossible to defeat as the economy enters a fourth year of expansion. With a little luck, the economy will tank over the next couple of years, and the Dems will win handily.

Vinnie: The only photo I want to see is the one where McCain is fucking a goat.

Nofzinger, like the criminal president he worked for in the 70's, is full of it. "A four year expansion?" meaning the entire recession is laid again at the feet of the clenis. and nice stalinist touch, setting as opposed the interests of the democratic party and the country as a whole. bravo!

Bush is not running in 2006 & 2008 so nobody really cares.

And that of course would explain why the WH is freely handing out those photos, instead of desperately trying to "disappear" them.

Oh, wait.

Sweet. The right-wingers only defense is "Democrats took money too!" and even *that's* a lie.

Bunch of cowards. That means you too, tbroz.

In the UK, Number 10 could simply call up the papers, issue a D-Notice against the printing of the pictures, and Bob's your uncle.

We're at war, aren't we?
And those pictures would be detrimental to the war effort, wouldn't they?

(Don't show this post to Cheney, or Gonzales, o.k.?)

Abramoff sold ACCESS. His home and office are probably plastered with photos of himself and Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld - everyone and anyone in the adminstration.

What I don't understand is why there isn't an independant counsel taking charge of this evidence.

The Justice Department cannot be trusted with evidence like photos from Abramoffs office or home.

This is nuts. Of course Bush knew the guy... the fellow sold access to the president.

Hey, Neanderthal,

You didnt include any linkies so we can trace the source of the elephant dung that you posted at 5:27 PM. In short, youre spreading disinformation about Dems taking money from Abramoff. Unfortunately, like you, our neanderthal MSM keeps spreading the same crapola, too.

According to FEC data, not one Democrat took money from Jack or Pamela Abramoff unlike Repubs. Also at Capital Eye, click the links for "Recipient" to check donor amounts from the Abramoffs. You will find that Indian tribes the victims of Abramoff's casino scam contributed to Dems like Harry Reid as they have for years. But Dems didn't participate in the ripoff. That's 100% Repub. Abramoff conned the tribes assisted by Ralph Reed and James Dobson.

Soon we won't have a shortage of Bush-Abramoff pics to peruse. One "photo shows Abramoff and Bush with Raul Garza, chairman of the Kickapoo Indians in Texas, who has been indicted on charges of stealing $300,000 from his tribe."

I wonder when Scott McClellan will cease from promoting the falsehood that the "President does not know [Abramoff], nor does the President recall ever meeting him."

Too much R-propaganda. Not enough fact. And way too much R-corruption.

Same-o shame-o.

In terms of damage control, it seems to me the White House hasn't learned their lessons. Those pictures are going to come out, and it will come out sooner or later how many times Bush and his staff met with Abramoff. Why not release all this stuff on a Friday afternoon? McClellan set himself up when he said they were going to release the info; now he's going to have to answer questions about it constantly.

Just dumb.

Abramoff looks like a gangster.
Abramoff is a Republican.
Abramoff gave money exclusively to the GOP.

He is, therefore, a GOP gangster. Bush was obviously on a first name basis with Gangster Jack, just as he was with the GOP Homosexual Prostitute, Jeff Gannon, and the GOP Enron Stock Fraud King, Ken Lay.

Soon, we will hear that Bush didn't really work closely with Karl Rove, prison-bound.

The real danger to Bush is not photos of Abramoff; it is the scope of Abramoff's rat-em-out plea agreement which requires requires the extensive naming of names of members of Congress, staffers, ex-staffers, lobbyists, friends, colleagues and his own personal assistants, the chief one of whom now works for Karl Rove. Abramoff's personal assistant saved all of his emails and wrote a detailed account of all of his contacts every day of his life. Said accounts now belong to the prosecution.

Happy Secretary's Day, Dude.

If there were, they'd be in the papers or on the internets by now--the Little Segretti's are already flooding local papers with reports of donations to Dems from people who hired Abramoff--which is usually shortened to "donations from Abramoff".
Let's see how many Dems get indicted.

In this day and age of Photo Shop in every home, why would voters care about an image of the President with justaexposed with that of a self-confessed criminal? Only the Bush haters would think that a pious man like George will associate with a law breaker.

Libs should just worry about the strange coincidence that bin Laden's words are verbatim copies of the DNC talking points. The liberals first have to answer legitimate questions about where their loyalties lie before they can even attempt to somehow associate our President with Abramoff.

Abramoff is probably one of the more savory characters that the Bush family is chummy with.

Let's see:

- The bin Laden family, well there's a nice bunch of folks that the Bush family has been courting for several decades now. Poppy helped keep their son, Osama, well-armed through most of the 1980's.
- Rev. Sun Myung Moon - The Bush family has been in bed with this religiously insane sex pervert since the 1980s, happily pocketing his ill-gotten funds from drugs and human trafficking, despite his connections to the North Korean government.
- Manuel Noriega - Poppy was bosom buddies with ole Pineapple Face until he went off the reservation and tried to keep the money from all of the tootski passing through Panama to himself.
- Mobutu Sese Seko - The Bush's also were good buds with this blood-thirsty dictator until he was overthrown.

So, yeah, Jack Abramoff looks like a pretty nice guy compared to a lot of the slime that the Bush family is chummy with (except that Abramoff likely ordered the gangland slaying of Gus Boulis, but hey, what's a corpse or two in the name of business???).

George W. Bush's overall job approval rating has returned to its lowest point in Bush's presidency as Americans again turn less optimistic about the national economy according to the latest survey from the American Research Group. Among all Americans, 36% approve of the way Bush is handling his job as president and 58% disapprove. When it comes to Bush's handling of the economy, 34% approve and 60% disapprove.

Posted by: SecularAnimist on January 23, 2006 at 3:46 PM | PERMALINK

This topic seems to have our Trolletariat a bit worked up. That indicates to me that they are worried about these pictures, otherwise they would not have made such a concerted effort to deflect conversations about them or to try and diminish their clearly damaging potential. This is especially true when one adds into the fact the WH is caught up already in the Plame/Fitzgerald criminal investigations with the indictment of Libby and the continual shadow of indictment hanging over Karl Rove. Having these pictures out, especially if Rove is indicted in this year would be major political dynamite and the GOP knows it. Hence the efforts being made to turn this into a bipartisan scandal when it clearly is not as well as the attempts to insulate Bushco from Abramoff despite the clear close ties between Abramoff and the Bush election machine aka Karl Rove/Grover Norquist/Ralph Reed/etc.

Posted by: Scotian on January 23, 2006 at 6:03 PM | PERMALINK

I think this photo flap is a Karl Rove three card monte scam.

If the photos don't exist or are purely innocuous--as the White House claims--does that mean Bush, Rove and the GOP Gangster Jack Abramoff are not up to their asses in conspiracy?

It does not.

No reasonable person can doubt that Bush tooted cocaine--and lots of it--or that he ducked out of his Air National Guard duty. And yet, the facts of these events have been blurred in irrelevancies.

The current unreasonable focus of Bush-Abramoff photos is a similar attempt at distraction.

The GOP gangster Abramoff gave money exclusively to Republicans, including Bush. He was a Bush "pioneer"(i.e., major fundraiser), steering more--probably a lot more-than $100K into the Bush reelection checking account.

Bush is friends with a gangster, and we should not let the little drunken frat boy snot lie his way of this.
