CONTRACEPTION FROM ALABAMA TO WYOMING....How does your state rank in providing easy access to contraception and family planning services? Not good enough, says the Guttmacher Institute:

Guttmacher's president and CEO, Sharon Camp, warned that obstacles to contraception at the state level could derail efforts, dating from the Clinton administration, to cut the rate of unintended pregnancies by 40 percent by 2010.

...."We need to be making contraception easy for women, but in many states we're actually making it harder," said Camp. "When effective contraceptive use rises, abortion rates go down."

The full report is here. State rankings are below the fold. The top five include California and New York (no surprise) and Alabama, South Carolina, and Alaska (surprise!). Overall, the rankings clearly don't follow the red/blue divide you'd expect. Peculiar.

Indiana is just a piece of Mississippi and Alabama that broke off and drifted north. Obesity, STD's, illiteracy, percentage of college graduates fleeing the state for good, percentage of population living in a trailer park, teen pregnancy, tobacco use, you name it we're sure to rank close to the top (or bottom) of all the negative categories you can rattle off. Just today the local news informed us we have one of the highest rates of pregnant women that smoke. It really is much like a third world country.

Makes sense, I didn't learn what a clitoris was until Sophomore year of college and I had to cross over to Minnesota to get that information. I do remember once talking about puberty in health class in high school but I it seemed the whole thing was about more body hair.

Hey, did you guys know that girls don't pee out of their buts? Not if you're from ND. I should go find a Nebraska guy so I can tell him what's up.

Thanks for all the liberal madness Kevin.

KJ --

Are you joking? I learned what a clitoris was and what it was for from a Catholic priest when I was in high school. No, he wasn't a molester, he'd just counseled too many married couples who'd fallen apart due to extreme sexual ignorance. (This was in the early 60's.)

Which is why I'm a little dubious about a study that focuses on "state" efforts; may be little short on recognizing (for instance) the LDS, who in my experience, promote contraception with equal vigor to what they oppose abortion.

Abortion has pretty high mortality for the fetus though. Not 100%. Sometimes you get survivors which is strange because they aren't really people but do all that walking and talking stuff.

How high is the mortality of childbirth?
To justify sucking the brains out of a child it must be pretty high.

No, that's not what anyone's saying. The idea is to make sure that both knowledge of contraception and contraception itself is eaily available to women. Oddly, one of the side effects would be a drop in the abortion rate. What a horrible thing!

Sorry about the [pointless] serious response - couldn't think of anything funny . . .

"After all, if you saw or heard it - you won't be able to deceive yourself that this was right."

Women dying -pointlessly, painfully - of back-alley abortions? That's true, and only our short cultural memory explains why we are heading back to those days.

"That's what leaving the head in the womb seems to do."

Oh, wait, you're talking (analogously) about rare, desperate-measure late term abortions. Never mind. I am sure people will be shocked - shocked - when the news starts reporting on coathanger deaths. That's what leaving the head in the sand seems to do.

* * *

South Dakota's position (for example) - as well as the renewed willingness of the wackjobs to push birth-control bans - shows how appropriate (if not effective) the choice of 'choice' and 'control (over their own bodies)' rhetoric has been. It's *all* been about women's choice and control over their own bodies. The choice to say no to sex (laws against marital rape are younger than most (or all?) Gen-Xers; sexual harrassment policies. Control over fertility, both in terms of knowledge and technology - after all, remember in the US, both were feverishly repressed well into the 20th Century (google Margaret Sanger, Comstock laws). We've forgotten the war against (and for) birth control, and you know what they say about those who forget history . . . The choice to become educated, to have a career (as opposed to working out of economic necessity, which has always been the case), which go hand in hand with the idea that women can be anything else beyond child-bearers.

We are just marching backwards. It might help to point out - if the idea of women as valuable human beings in their own right, rather than handmaids and incubators for truly valuable human beings (ie, men and fetuses) doesn't work - that women being able to make choices and having control over their own bodies is good for families and children: -
Margaret Sanger: "

We want mothers to be fit. We want them to conceive in joy and gladness. We want them to carry their babies during the nine months in a sound and healthy body and with a happy, joyous, hopeful mind. . . . the couple who can take care of two children and bring them up decently in health and comfort, give them an education and start them fairly in life, do more for their country and for mankind than the couple who recklessly reproduce ten or twelve children, some of them to die in infancy, others to survive but to enter the mill or factory at an early age, and all to sink to that level of degradation where charity, either state or private, is necessary to keep them alive."
(Of course, this can veer off in a rather bad direction, but what can't?)

Wow...my state of residence (Alabama) is ranked 4th? REALLY? And our public funding score is higher than both California's and New York's? REALLY???

We are talking about the same Alabama, right? The one where I was told by my high school science teacher that evolution is "just a theory" and therefore doesn't even need to be glossed over in a science class? The one where administrators in my school wanted to implement a sex ed class (a good idea, given the ungodly high rate of pregnancies and STDs in the high school population), but the community forbade it on "moral" grounds?

Color me surprised.

Posted by: Whitters on March 1, 2006 at 9:11 AM | PERMALINK

It is interesting the way some deep red or blue states seem to have rankings the opposite of what'd you'd think. Here's a theory: Good old fashioned hypocrisy. You have some states that are all liberal on the surface, but have a very old and powerful puritan streak that makes them speak liberal and act conservative. At the same time, you have states that are big on talking tough, but maybe have a more free-wheeling personal side. Perhaps this explains why divorce rates tend to be higher in some Republican states and lower in some Dem ones. Tis the inner hedonist or puritian, as the case may be, showing through in the statistics.

Gee, Texas is 45th. What a shocker. Not only do they try to limit access to contraception here, but they also try to limit any and all sex education, which leads to stories like this http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcontent/dws/dn/latestnews/stories/030106dnccostdteens.1231518a.html (Ignorance blamed for local rise in teen STDs).

Posted by: Eric on March 1, 2006 at 9:41 AM | PERMALINK

I wonder if there isn't a kind of "small-state" effect in the table. If a state spends any kind of money at all, it may look better in per capita terms than a larger state that actually provides better services.

If my conjecture is true, Texas looks even worse ...

Posted by: Tim Morris on March 1, 2006 at 9:48 AM | PERMALINK

Why do conservatives hate fetuses?

Why do they want more abortions?

Because for conservative pro-lifers it's never been about the sanctity of life, but the control of people through control of sex, especially the control of women.

Posted by: Advocate for God on March 1, 2006 at 9:57 AM | PERMALINK

David Mastio,

Oregon qualifies as a blue state - By the majority voting for Gore and Kerry, it is assumed to be liberal. The cities of Portland and Eugene are liberal, but the majority of the suburbs and counties are Red.
The Democrats control the State Senate. However, the Republicans control the House.
Therefore, it is very difficult to pass increases in education or even sex education funding.
Oregon ranks 8th on this report - It is the Democratic leaders who have worked hard to achieve this level.
We also have a "Democratic" Governor - He straddles many issues. However, I do give him credit for one thing. He was in the Marines and he has personally attended every funeral for the members of the Oregon National Guard who have been killed in action in the Middle East. I suppose another former Guv never has heard of that practice.

how about those pharmacists that are allowed to refuse to fill a prescription for oral birth control because it's against THEIR religion??? i actually had this happen to me and had to go to another pharmacy to get it filled. now, i take bcp's as a treatment for a disease, not for birth control, but that didn't matter. but it's also secondarily for birth control because i know that with my health issues i would be less than a great mother. not going to inflict that on some poor child. but i do have a husband, and not having sex is out of the question, so obviously i need some form of birth control. and if conservatives don't want me having an abortion and still want the "man of the house to get some", then birth control needs to be available.

Posted by: EM on March 1, 2006 at 11:34 AM | PERMALINK

EM,

Sex without the possibility of procreation is a sin against God according to conservatives, so I'm sure they would support the pharmacist in your case.

And men, but not women, are allowed to dally outside the marriage to "get some", because it is the nature of men to need sex, but not women, also according to conservatives.

So, best of luck, then, if you live in a red state.

I have told this story before: my step sister, law degree Pepperdine - 2004 and rabid Bush Republican, was denied birth control pills for a prescription intended to alleviate other problems in Mesa, AZ, 2005. She still remains a Bush whore, which is not surprising, since she is a family member of S. California's conservative elites (masters accounting, USC).

I am saddened to see the state of my birth last on the list. NE's motto, home to the good life, will be banned from my speech.

I wonder if this (contraceptive availability) is one of those issues that is so wildly popular that its policy status doesn't track very well with broader social trends as one might expect, but instead is determined by lower level effectiveness of hard core pro- or anti-contraception groups who's distribution is a lot more random.

"That is the kind of behavior one should expect when women do not have reproductive control over their own bodies."

And in general, globally&historically speaking, actual infanticide - or even the slow version ( neglect of babies that don't seem to be thriving) is a rational strategy (however horrible) when resources are very limited. We can all starve together or a few of us can survive - sort of thing. And of course, giving women reproductive control over their own bodies seems to help reduce poverty . . .

And they call us babykillers?

Oh, but right - provide access to birth control is - as one of the crackbrains in the article said - encouraging sex outside of marriage . . .

And why do conservachristian nutjobs hate women with endo?

As that rare bird known as an anti-abortion liberal (yes, we do exist!), it fascinates me to see that the red/blue divide doesn't work here (can you think of any other public health survey where Mississippi rates higher than Rhode Island?). If you're truly against abortion, why shouldn't you champion contraception and birth control to prevent unwanted pregnancies? Have never understood the logic of that? (Then again, I've never understood people who call themselves "pro-life" and wholeheartedly support capital punishment.)

Rather easily, actually. Understanding it really only requires that a person can be "truly against abortion" without abortion being the only thing they are truly against.

What is interesting, and should be discussed by people making decisions, is the per capita costs vs. availability score.

If, say, California is spending twice the amount per capita and still the goodies are less available (or equally available) than another state somebody probably ought to get fired.

Or is 'economies of scale' a factor? Even so...
