KALOOGIAN UPDATE....If you've been following the recent nitwittery surrounding Republican congressional candidate Howard Kaloogian ("Each day the news media finds any violence occurring in the country and screams and shouts about it in part because many journalists are opposed to the U.S. effort to fight terrorism," he said, but it turned out the picture he posted to show how calm things were in Baghdad was actually taken in Istanbul) well, if you've been following it you might be wondering just how well Kaloogian is doing in his race to take over Duke Cunningham's seat in California's 50th congressional district. Here's the answer: he's got about 12% of the vote. For now. Somehow I have a feeling those numbers might drop a bit in the next few days.

What's also interesting is that Francine Busby has 45% of the vote compared to 46% for the combined Republicans in this heavily Republican district. Hmmm.

Diebold will come through for Freedom in the end!

Posted by: Freedom Phucker on March 30, 2006 at 2:08 PM | PERMALINK

I think FP may be on to something there. If I remember right, the Diebold machines somehow managed to register more Republican votes in some districts than there were voters on the rolls.

Hmmmmm...........

Posted by: Derelict on March 30, 2006 at 2:11 PM | PERMALINK

Clearly, what's needed is more Republican contenders for this seat. That should seal the deal for Francine.

Posted by: craigie on March 30, 2006 at 2:12 PM | PERMALINK

In fairness to Kaloogian, it's hard to tell Iraq from Turkey, because neither of them is in California and both are filled with funny foreign types who don't even speak English too good.

Posted by: craigie on March 30, 2006 at 2:13 PM | PERMALINK

So does someone like Kooligan think we are that stupid here on the internets not to know the difference between a photo of Turkey vs Iraq, or are most republicans willing to believe anything an authority figure tells them to believe? Rhetorical, I know.

Posted by: The Media on March 30, 2006 at 2:14 PM | PERMALINK

The only downside here is, because it's a special election, a candidate must get 50% of the vote or it goes to a runoff between the top two; that means she needs not 45% but 50%, or she faces a 1-on-1 against a Republican in a Republican district.

Posted by: bleh on March 30, 2006 at 2:19 PM | PERMALINK

If Busby cracks 50% there will be NO RUNOFF!! Please donate now - the earlier money comes in, the more helpful it is. Let's take this seriously red district!

Posted by: america lover on March 30, 2006 at 2:21 PM | PERMALINK

Is the Republican strategy just to throw enough chaff at voters to keep Busby from getting 50%?

Posted by: tinfoil on March 30, 2006 at 2:21 PM | PERMALINK

And if I understand correctly, the next photo that Kaloogian offered up has been identified as a photo taken from a hotel roof in the Green Zone. A lame aerial view showing nothing - taken from the safety of the Green Zone? Lame. Where are the photos of serene street markets in Baghdad Kaloogian allegedly experienced?

What a stoogian.

Posted by: ckelly on March 30, 2006 at 2:33 PM | PERMALINK

If she does not win now, I am afraid it will be a repeat of the mayoral election, and we will be faced with the prospect of the idiot Roach representing us.

Roach is sending mailers almost evryday. His claim is that he is not taking any PAC money, which is because he lives in filthy rich Fairbanks Ranch, so he doesn't have to. And he also claims that Busby is taking money from 'far-left' groups like labor! What a moron.

Posted by: lib on March 30, 2006 at 2:36 PM | PERMALINK

tinfoil >"Is the Republican strategy just to throw enough chaff at voters to keep Busby from getting 50%?"

Move on. This guy's toast. His campaign, such as it was, jumped the shark two days ago when his picture of "Baghdad" was discovered to be a fraud.

Posted by: Jeff II on March 30, 2006 at 2:44 PM | PERMALINK

Interesting that Bilbray is doing so poorly, given he has the name recognition (as does Kaloogian). Uke is running on terrorism (he's against it), Roach ditto on immigration. Unhappily one of the saner Republicans (Ernst) is "other".

How does Kaloogian have "12% of the vote" already?

Drum writes as if the votes are being tallied. When was the election?

Posted by: FrequencyKenneth on March 30, 2006 at 2:46 PM | PERMALINK

Is Hugh Hewlitt there in Istanbul with Kaloogian, in terrible danger yet finding the courage to defend America's pastrami sandwiches?

Posted by: Mike on March 30, 2006 at 2:48 PM | PERMALINK

And if I understand correctly, the next photo that Kaloogian offered up has been identified as a photo taken from a hotel roof in the Green Zone

You missed a detail, ckelly. It's a rooftop shot of the Green Zone, shot in the summer of 2005. EXIF data -- it'll get you every time. Note to nitwits wishing to lie via the computer: learn a little bit about the technology before doing so.

We have the same low-IQ congressman in Calif District 2... I swear!
I attended a "Town Hall Meeting" in which the public was invited to voice their concerns, questions and comments to District 2 Representative, Wally Herger. It was a monumental waste of time. He advised me to "move to San Fransisco, where I'd fit in just fine."

Following is my attempt to sort out what was said by category, in no particular order, since I didn't take notes.

1.) A comment I wasn't given the chance to make was that Medicare & Medicaid could easily have been authorized to negotiate with pharmaceutical companies for lower pricing on drugs to seniors and the uninsured. But that wouldn't have given Bu$h's Corporate $upporter$, the In$urance Companie$, this "part D" opportunity for ADDED profit$ or ensure that pharmaceutical companies have the choice to divvy up the spoils to their own satisfaction. Herger has a ZERO % rating by APHA, has an anti-public health voting record. Also a ZERO % rating by ARA, has an anti-senior voting record.

Herger STRONGLY FAVORS decreasing taxes on the wealthy, supports the Patriot Acts, supports MORE spending on war spending and military recruitment in schools.
(Basically, herger parrots the PNAC faction of the republican Party. what's a PNAC? you ask? If you don't know you BETTER learn: http://www.newamericancentury.org/statementofprinciples.htm )

2.) Mr Herger encouraged folks to waste a lot of time discussing Immigration, instead of what many attending WANTED to discuss: the local 'hot' topic of Inentec, the company who attempts to build a medical waste facility in Tehama County against the wishes of Citizens. That entire subject was entirely skirted. Instead, Herger encouraged lengthy discussions about immigration, which were mostly complaints about mexicans "stealing" our jobs (and "our" welfare checks) --- even though Mr Herger stated that the agriculturists all over his district, and elsewhere COMPLAIN TO HIM THAT THEY HAVE TOO FEW WORKERS - Americans being unavailable for that type of hard work. He allowed AND ENCOURAGED far too many biased, bigoted opinions to be expressed at length.

3.) I wanted to point out that EVERY American came from IMMIGRANTS. That's what this country is about. With the world trade organization resulting in outsourcing American industrial, customer service and technical jobs, many Americans no longer have jobs. It appears to me that Bush's government attempts to divert the outsourcing & related job loss by attacking immigrants, accusing them of 'taking our jobs', thereby INSTIGATING RACIAL RESENTMENT against Mexicans, while INSINUATING "terrorists" are in Mexico, poised to rush over our borders..(the Evil genius,'Rove's Fear Factor' again) In truth, most jobs Mexicans take are NOT jobs Americans fill - is the Bush Administration attempting to stop immigration in order to move those jobless americans into ag field and servants work? (I can garantee that won't happen!) I realize there needs to be some changes in immigration but making felons out of immigrants and FELONS out of CHRISTIANS WHO ASSIST NEEDY FAMILIES AND CHILDREN is NOT ACCEPTABLE! In Truth, Mexicans make GOOD CITIZENS. They fill jobs that make it possible for America's agriculture to suceed and they pay taxes. They deserve the right to become citizens. JUST as OUR grandfathers became citizens.

"Immigration Reform" is an issue blown out of context. "Reform" does not require bigotry and conflict. It is irresponsible to encourage unrest, and it only takes a few agitators, (as Rove very well understands) to start a dangerous, hatefilled, bigoted conflagration which is NOTHING BUT a diversionary tactic behind which the 'bushies' are better able to conduct their nefarious schemes. Creating a civil war situation here at home, can be a convenient distraction for the war in Iraq! The Bush administration is DELIBERATELY creating ARMED BORDER CONFLICT with our neighbors !! Herger supports that.

The Bush administration woos religion shamelessly, (again: Rove understands the "Value" of religion!) but they do not practise what they preach in any way, shape or form. Rather than throwing BILLIONS of dollars into DESTROYING and 'De-POPULATING' innocent, poverty ridden countries, the "CHRISTIAN" (and far cheaper) thing to do would be to spend money on IMPROVING those economies to ENCOURAGE democratic principles around the world. The precept of "you're going to be Free or we'll bomb you" is against every principle OF "Democracy". As is the hate-mongering of other religious choice!

4.) Herger insists on calling himself an "environmentalist". Nothing is further from the truth considering his abysmal voting record. In Red Bluff, (March 24th) Herger admitted that he doesn't know anything about and doesn't understand the issue of "global warming". (here he ignored and cut-off a lady who told him, "but as a LEGISLATOR you VOTE on it...") Illistrating the truth of his statement, he talked instead about how there used to be dinasaurs and ice ages, and that WE NEED TO TAKE LAND OUT OF FEDERAL OWNERSHIP SO IT CAN BE DEVELOPED -along with the Alaska Oil Fields- and how our country (including sea shores) NEEDS to be developed "OR OUR GAS MIGHT GO UP TO $10 a gallon."

[ominously like a 'threat']

He told us he'd been to Alaska and flew over the pipeline and that he saw lots of 'tame' animals hanging around the pipeline, "THEY LOVE THE OIL", he said. The "caribou love the oil, it's nice and warm there"

[honest to God, he said that! (@-@) Does he even know what a caribou IS?]

Self-proclaimed environmentalist Herger's record is that he gets a ZERO RATING from the League of Conservation Voters (www.lcv.org) Herger voted NOT to prohibit oil drilling &development in ANWAR. Voted NOT to raise CAFE standards &incentives for alternative fuels. Voted NO on Kyoto. Voted to 'deauthorize' 'critical habitat' and voted to speed up approval for forest 'thinning' projects.

5.) Herger refused to acknowledge the question about the biggest profits for gas COMPANIES in history. However, he did allow a lengthy, boring monolog about energy and sun and wind. He chose NOT to hear the comment about the possibility of turbines in ocean current to generate CLEAN and ENDLESS energy.

6.) Herger refused to take questions or comments from those who demonstrated opposing opinions to his own, EVEN WHILE EXCLAIMING ""how wonderful it is to have these 'town hall meetings' WHERE I CAN HEAR THE OPINIONS of my constituents, TO HEAR WHAT YOUR COMPLAINTS ARE and KEEP 'IN TOUCH' WITH YOUR CONCERNS"".

I had to shout my comment that I didn't feel 'represented'. He flatly stated that he did NOT represent those who oppose him, "just the 'other 67%".

Herger votes NOT to restrict campaign finance reform. NOT to ban soft money or issue ads. Herger is a hard core 'conservative' who CALLS himself an "Environmentalist" (what GALL!) see http://house.ontheissues.org/CA/Wally_Herger.htm

.............wally herger HAS TO GO!............

It's particularly odd because Kaloogian is Armenian-American and one would expect him not to mix up Turkey with another country, nor to take a visit to Turkey lightly.

Posted by: Brittain33 on March 30, 2006 at 3:42 PM | PERMALINK

Kaloogian is the very definition of right wing hack. We should send him on another truth tour, this time to actually FIND some truth.

I still can't believe that the only photo Kaloogian was able to produce was shot from the balcony of a hotel in the Green Zone. That's beyond pathetic. I suppose that's one step up from trying to pass off a photo of the smiling staff handing out towels poolside as an example of the thriving Iraqi economy, but not by much....

Posted by: Stefan on March 30, 2006 at 6:57 PM | PERMALINK

We should've waited for Kaloogian to post up a picture of the Hagia Sophia and claim that Baghdad's biggest mosque was undamaged.

Sent Thurs 3/30 @ 5:25pm from MoveAmericaForwards.com, purveyors of rejuvinating oils extracted from only the finest Republican snakes:

"Friends:

Last night I wrote to you to give you a heads up on the fact that there was a growing attack on our campaign by the news media and liberal political activists.

And the good news is that despite their best efforts, their attacks are backfiring.

Here's the scoop...

Because they disagree with our support for Operation Iraqi Freedom, the liberal news media and left-wing political activists are trying to defeat us and have sunk to the petty level of attacking me because 1 photograph on my website was mislabeled. The photograph was from our "Voices of Soldiers" tour to Iraq where we went to support our troops fighting in the war against terrorism.

That 1 photograph in question was labeled "Baghdad, Iraq" when it was in fact from Istanbul, Turkey (where part of our delegation had a layover on their return home to the United States).

Once we realized the problem we took down the picture, accepted full responsibility, apologized and replaced the photograph with one properly taken of Baghdad.

Yet, like their efforts to smear President Bush with the last minute DUI story in 2000 or the bogus Dan Rather "Memogate" scandal of 2004 these attacks on my trip to Iraq are already backfiring.

In the past 24 hours my campaign website has been bombarded with our largest inflow of support in the form of campaign contributions that we have experienced the entire campaign.

I am asking that you help me continue to maintain this momentum, so I can respond to these attacks and take our message to the voters.

Please make a contribution to my campaign here:

http://www.kaloogian.com/contribute

[You can contribute any amount - $5, $50, $500, $5,000 or anywhere in between... all the way up to $6,300 per individual]

The American people have had enough of the liberal news media and their blatant smear campaigns against conservative candidates.

I want to thank you so much for standing by me and remaining committed in our campaign. We are going to achieve a great victory on April 11th and it will all be possible because of YOUR support.

With my heartfelt appreciation,

Howard Kaloogian

It's easy to explain. Conservatives are leaving California in droves, making what seemed a heavily Republican district into a 50/50 district. It was a Democrat strategy all along to allow millions of illegals into California, making it a hell-hole for decent people. Only liberals want to stay, everyone knows they are masochists.
