RIBBIT....Jason Leopold reports the Patrick Fitzgerald met with Karl Rove's lawyers on Friday to deliver some bad news: During the course of that meeting, Fitzgerald served attorneys for former Deputy White House Chief of Staff Karl Rove with an indictment charging the embattled White House official with perjury and lying to investigators related to his role in the CIA leak case, and instructed one of the attorneys to tell Rove that he has 24 hours to get his affairs in order, high level sources with direct knowledge of the meeting said Saturday morning.
.... It was still unknown Saturday whether Fitzgerald charged Rove with a more serious obstruction of justice charge. Sources close to the case said Friday that it appeared very likely that an obstruction charge against Rove would be included with charges of perjury and lying to investigators.
An announcement by Fitzgerald is expected to come this week, sources close to the case said. However, the day and time is unknown.
Hmmm. I vote for Thursday. Give the NSA story a little more time to simmer before we put it on the back burner.

I fact, she outta get one of those great big industrial brooms and carry it with her whenever she goes to congress. She could issue press releases claiming to have found 275 bonafide big government Republican communists in the Congress.
She could call Bartlett to the witness stand and he could testify how the Big government Reaganties secretly planned to grow the federal government until we were all a two class society.

The 'get Rove's affairs in order in the next 24 hours' part doesn't ring true. He's not about to be arrested (like Rush Limpdick) - Scooter wasn't.
And how does the 24 hours relate to a public announcement: is it usual for a prosecutor to inform the defendant prior to announcement - which surely won't come over the weekend?
Sounds like Jason Leopard got at least some bad info - although he is a good investigative reporter (originally from the Dow Jones- WSJ)
Oh when the frogs, come marching in....

I'm thinking that it's really still too early to be celebrating. Leopold told us all last fall that there would be twenty-something (22?) indictments being handed down in October. All we got was ol' Scooter. I do find some assurance that Jeralyn at Talk Left is treating Jason's report as credible. But it's still not enough to pop the Veuve Cliquot cork - yet. I have to admit though, I am holding my breath. The thought of Rove froggy marching across the White House lawn would give about two hundred million people a bit of satisfaction. Maybe more if one looks for a global audience.

Duke responds, "And if you don't fork over 2.4 million dollars and a yacht you won't get much more, either." "How about a hooker?" asks the bartender. "How about twelve?" replies Duke. "Well," says the bartender, feeling a little more sure of himself, "why don't you try talking to that fellow over there?" "Who's that?" "His names' Dick." "Dick? Isn't he dead?" I believe the indictment announced to the public will be next Friday - on a Friday, just like Libby's indictment last October. Actually, Jason Leopold isn't the only one announcing frogmarch time for next week. The other tact is to find out if AG Gonzales was there last Friday to hear the indictment and ask questions of the grand jury (he may have been there) - just like the Libby case one week before his indictment. So: one person says Rove has already announced to those near and dear to him, and another person reports Gonzales was at the GJ to hear the indictment read. Shall we go for three verifications?

Just a question:
Who would be talking to Leopold, and why? Fitzgerald's people have been pretty good about keeping their mouth shut about things. That would leave Rove's lawyers talking to Leopold, but why would they want to leak that he is going to be indicted next week?
Where is the angle?
If Fitz met at Rove's lawyer's offices why havent we heard about that from somewhere else? I thought that the news agencies had people camped out there and following Fitz around just in case something happened. Who knows...maybe people out there is spreading false information bout this because it will take the heat away from something else big that is going to come down this coming week.

Wayne Madsen saw Gonzales' car arrive at the grand jury location Friday, for what that's worth. (Dicier than Leopold in many ways, but this was in-person observation.) Notice to AG is courtesy when indictment of high admin official coming. I suppose it's conceivable he'd be there for another reason, but you'd have to come up with it...
Schuster at MSNBC also expects indictment announcement next week.
Leopold never said 22 people would be indicted; he may have gotten some other stuff wrong, but I don't know of anything of the kind that should make him radioactive. I certainly understand the impulse not to want to jinx this. I've had a tidy bet on this indictment for a while, and I'm still confident of winning, but it's taken a lot longer than I'd hoped.

Never in the history of this country did a man more deserve indictments and disgrace. But looking at the recent history and retaliation of the this administration--its daily nightmare and disgrace--I will not rest easy till the monster is in shackles. Much of the worst things done in the name of the American people were authored by Rove. He is all kinds of evil and I won't believe the demon will go easily to justice. But let us this evening unite and hope that this hugely happy event is true. But wait, there's more, this time concerning Trigger Dick. From MSNBC:
May 13, 2006 - The role of Vice President Dick Cheney in the criminal case stemming from the outing of White House critic Joseph Wilson's CIA wife is likely to get fresh attention as a result of newly disclosed notes showing that Cheney personally asked whether Wilson had been sent by his wife on a "junket" to Africa.
Cheney's notes, written on the margins of a July 6, 2003 New York Times op-ed column by former ambassador Joseph Wilson, were included as part of a filing Friday night by prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald in the perjury and obstruction case against ex-Cheney chief of staff I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby.
Fitzgerald first alleged that Cheney had questioned whether Wilson's trip was a "junket" in a court filing last month. In that filing, Fitzgerald also asserted that the vice president, acting with the approval of President Bush, had authorized Libby to disclose portions of the classified National Intelligence Estimate on Iraq to rebut some of Wilson's claims.
But the notes provide significant new context to that assertion. They show the vice president personally raised questions about Wilson's trip right after the publication of the Wilson column-and five days before Libby confirmed to Time reporter Matt Cooper that he had "heard" that Wilson's wife, former CIA agent Valerie Plame, had played a role in sending him to Africa.
Even if the rumors regarding Rove's indictment are true (or false, for that matter), it looks like Fitzgerald isn't done quite yet...

Tbrosz and other wingnuts remind me of a particular moment in history -
4/22/1945: "Hitler interrupted the report to ask what had happened to General Steiner's offensive...There was a long silence and then Hitler was told that the attack had never been launched, and that the withdrawal from Berlin of several units for Steiner's army, on Hitler's orders, had so weakened the front that the Russians had broken through into Berlin. That was too much for Hitler. He asked everyone except Keitel, Krebs, Jodl, Burgdorf and Bormann to leave the room...Then Hitler started jumping up and down, while he ranted and raved. His face turned white and purple in turns, and he was shaking all over. His voice kept breaking, as he screamed out the words disloyalty, cowardice, treachery and insurbordination. There followed accusations against the Wehrmacht and Waffen-SS, of the kind that previous explosions had brought out in somewhat milder form. His outburst culminated in the oath that he would remain in Berlin, with the Berliners, that he would lead the fight personally - let all who wish to desert him and the city do so now. And then something happened that none of those present had ever seen or expected to see: Hitler suddenly returned to his chair and collapsed. Sobbing like a little child, he stammered out: 'It's all up...the war is lost...I shall shoot myself." (Boldt, The Last Days of the Reichs Chancellery)

What bothers me about the Leopold report at Truthout (http://http://www.truthout.org/docs_2006/051306W.shtml/ may be the latest) is his claim that Fitz indicted Rove, in some sense, but didn't make a public announcement and report it to the media - huh? I think that was a record for fake Tbroszes in one thread. And they were even arguing with one another - not the sharpest blades in the drawer, I have to assume.

The nature of the Grand Jury beast is that even accurate reporting might not be borne out until the end of the process, when Fitzgerald delivers all his conclusions.
Until then, when and what we got, compared to what Leopold reported, means very little.
It's not only a pointless exercise, but it does not come close to approaching a constructive or responsible stance towards the issue as a whole.
Where are your sources? Where are your facts?
I don't presume to know whether Leopold and Pitt are correct or not -- but there's little-to-no actual evidence to the contrary. When Fitzgerald bares all, then we'll have some idea of whether the 22-count indictment story, or any of the other reporting, passes muster.
Until then, it would be constructive to actually deal with the available reporting itself, rather than repeat this perverse meme that some reporter is unreliable. Aren't they ALL?
Hell, Matthew Cooper was unreliable as hell. Let's make sure that every blog expends every effort, at EVERY opportunity, to point out that Matthew Cooper is unreliable. Let's do this EVERY time he publishes a story, and EVERY time TIME magazine puts out anther issue. After all, he knowingly lied to his readers, he knowingly printed falsehoods put out by Rove and also denying, on his own, knowledge of and participation in the Valerie Plame leaks.
But by all means, eat one of your own without access to all the facts. True the alternative sucks because Fitzgerald won't leak like Ken Starr, but them's the breaks...

'Bring Me The Head Of ...' was addressed to Sam Peckinpah and Warren Oats fans. I didn't realize that anyone posting here was not even born in 1974.
