CINEMATIC ALBINOS....From the "things you probably didn't know" file:

"The Da Vinci Code" will be the 68th movie since 1960 to feature an evil albino.

This comes courtesy of the National Organization for Albinism and Hypopigmentation, which is not amused. And I have to admit they've got a point: when I saw the trailer for The Da Vinci Code, I turned to Marian and the first thing I said said, "Jeez, what's the deal with evil albinos in the movies, anyway?"

But enough of this tomfoolery. I suppose it's time to return to more serious matters, isn't it?

The Albino in the Princess Bride is my favorite.

Apparently, there IS such a thing as being too white. But watch out for the gingers!

Who cares, I heard that this group had been up in arms when first learning of an evil Albino in the movie. Everytime there's an African American in the movie the NAACP doesn't scream their heads off do they...

Yes, turn to more weighty matters. BellSouth and now Verizon have denied the USAToday story.

Did not an Evil ALbino Monk actually marry Jesus in the worlds first gay wedding!

And the Bush White House & the Vatican are covering it up!

USA Today LIED! Nobody DIED! Nobody even got eavesdropped on!

But if they didn't lie...
And if sombody died...
And if somebody got eavesdropped on...

That's okay too.
Because then they were keeping me safe.

You see, I'm a repug, and we repugs can have things both ways whenever we want.

The Omega Man didn't have "albinos cast as heavies" in it.

Posted by: DB on May 16, 2006 at 7:24 PM | PERMALINK

Al-bino. Now that's funny. Good pun.

BTW - on the phone issue, Josh Marshall suggests watching the weasel words in the non-denial, denials. i.e. they don't say they didn't turn over any records at all.

Also, although it's easy to laugh at the way certain groups always gets cast as a villain, it probably isn't so funny if you're a member of that group.

And Hollywood does tend to reinforce certain stereotypes. Can't really suggest a remedy that doesn't cross the border into censorship. But I'd say that a good first step is pointing it out.

They were a mutant strain of albino's (even the black guy was white) who could not come out during the day.

I had an albino roommate who always found that cinema trope as idiotic. Many albinos are legally blind due to a lack of a developmental pigment in their eyes (he is) and so the notion of sharpshooting albino assassins (e.g.Chevy Chase/Goldie Hawn "Foul Play") was just utterly moronic to him.

Posted by: random on May 16, 2006 at 7:37 PM | PERMALINK

So... can anyone name 5 movies where there was an albino as a sympathetic character? Or the hero?

Or are they just cast as the bad guys because they are such a small minority that they can be dumped upon without fear of a backlash?

Just curious.

West's Failure Over Climate Change "Will Kill 182 Million Africans"
By Philip Thornton
The Independent UK
Monday 15 May 2006

Excerpt (emphasis added):

The poorest people in the world will be the chief victims of the West's failure to tackle global warming, with millions of Africans forecast to die by the end of the century, Christian Aid says in a report out today.

The potential ravages of climate change are so severe that they could nullify the efforts to end the legacy of poverty and disease across developing countries, the charity says.

The report highlights the fact that, despite hand-wringing in the West about the threat to its coastlines from rising temperatures, it is the poorest who are likely to suffer most. It estimates that a "staggering" 182 million people in sub-Saharan Africa could die of disease directly attributable to climate change by 2100. Many millions more face death and devastation from climate-induced floods, famine, drought and conflict.

Sir John Houghton, former co-chairman of the scientific assessment working group of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, has given his support to the report's findings. "This report exposes clearly and starkly the devastating impact that human-induced climate change will have on many of the world's poorest people," he said.

There's a character in Ghost in the Shell who's an albino who is not a villain, but he has a completely synthetic body so he probably doesn't count.

Posted by: cld on May 16, 2006 at 8:44 PM | PERMALINK

Yeah, I was sympathetic until I see they listed Draco Malfoy. They have vampires and characters in comedies in which their albinism wasn't even used for comic effect.

Dude, Draco Malfoy looks like I did when I was a kid - I'm not kidding - and I'm totally not albino.

The evil albino thing is over tired, and really spoils the whole movie, honestly.

Posted by: Crissa on May 16, 2006 at 8:45 PM | PERMALINK

That's not the movie's fault, but Dan Brown's lack of original thought.

My own 'heresy' is I think he's a really lousy writer who got lucky by simply having the right idea at the right time. His characters are flat, uninteresting, and inconsistent. His plots are totally predictable. His stories implausible.

I came away from reading both "The DaVinci Code" and "Angels and Demons" thinking, 'These books feel like they were written by a guy whose top priority was to get a tax deduction for his trips to Europe.'

Posted by: Technowitch on May 16, 2006 at 8:54 PM | PERMALINK

I listened to the audio book version of 'Da Code', and I have to say, the awful writing was made even more hilarious by the horendous overacting of the reader. With the vocal characatures, the dialog might as well have gone like,

Alibino [hushed, throaty, sinister (think Lord of the Rings)]: I am an alibno, and I'm evil.

French woman [girlish and froggy]: I am a woman, and I am French.

Professor [narrator's normal commercial radio DJ voice]: I am a professor, and I study the sacred feminine. Have I mentioned the sacred feminine 500 times, yet? Stop me when it's embarrasing to listen to. What? Already?

Posted by: pantomimehorse on May 16, 2006 at 9:59 PM | PERMALINK

That was a wild mispelling of 'caricatures', btw.

I work with an albino, who, while nearly blind, and likely a terrible shot, he *IS* quite the evil hacker, and probably has a rootkit on all your lame-ass windows boxes right now.

I've heard him soliloquy on his plan to take over the world. It starts with extortion, emailing all your porn to your grandmothers. Problem is; most of your grandmothers don't have computers.

Who? Bateau? He's not an albino. He's French.

Posted by: osama_been_forgotten on May 16, 2006 at 10:39 PM | PERMALINK

A few of those listed movies are rather dubious candidates. The villians in The Omega Man were not albinos per se, but ordinary people who had lost all pigmentation after being infected. Not quite the same thing, IMO. And the Malfoys in the Harry Potter movies were very light but did not suffer from albinism.

Posted by: Peter on May 16, 2006 at 11:29 PM | PERMALINK

Man, it would suck to be an Albino African-American member of the Black Panthers.

That's why Huge Hewitt is so pissed off at that movie.

Posted by: gus on May 17, 2006 at 7:40 AM | PERMALINK

I would like to point out that The Omega Man was one of the first movies that caved to a minority group's pressure and changed the antagonists. In the book on which the movie was based the virus turns the population of the earth into vampires, not albinos. Yet, the Vampire Anti-Defamation League pressured the studio to change the villains so as not to present vampires in such a negative light.

Posted by: Freder Frederson on May 17, 2006 at 8:23 AM | PERMALINK

And the Malfoys in the Harry Potter movies were very light but did not suffer from albinism.

The Malfoys aren't albinos, they are just blonde. Probably Norwegian. The British are still pissed about the Viking invasian in the 7th and 8th Century.

Posted by: Freder Frederson on May 17, 2006 at 8:25 AM | PERMALINK

Wouldn't vampires like negative light? It's the regular, natural light they don't care for....

I came away from reading both "The DaVinci Code" and "Angels and Demons" thinking, 'These books feel like they were written by a guy whose top priority was to get a tax deduction for his trips to Europe.'

...and yet you still went ahead and read 'Angels and Demons' after reading 'DaVinci." Which I guess sort of proves a point in a roundabout way - it's not really the quality of the writing that counts.

Personally, I found Davinci to be little more than a watered-down diet version of Ecco's "Foucault's Pendulum."

Posted by: moderleft on May 17, 2006 at 8:35 AM | PERMALINK

Yeah, the Malfoys? If we're going that far, why not count Elsa in "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade"? And the vampires? That part of the physical description is true to the description in the novel "Dracula", if I remember correctly, which I assume was inspired by the physical effects of consumption (tuberculosis). No need to assume the imagery is inspired by one group when it's obviously based on another.

And that's obviously a pretty unscientific study of albinos in film, if their two main classifications are "evil" and "sympathetic". (Rather than evil and good, or sympathetic and unsympathetic.) They're not admitting even the possibility of an albino being a good guy in a movie. (Nitpicking, I know. Sue me.)

Posted by: Cyrus on May 17, 2006 at 8:37 AM | PERMALINK

They're not "albino" any more than someone in a wheelchair would be called a "cripple." They're people with albinism. And the evil stereotype is very, very, old and stupid. I have a friend with albinism and this is a very serious matter as well it should be. But, oh well, I'm sure they're all plotting to overthrow the world with those evil facially disfigured people.

Posted by: Halfmad on May 17, 2006 at 8:47 AM | PERMALINK

Manhunter, the precurser to Silence of the Lambs, had a homosexual female-obsessed albino photographer with superhero strength as the ultimate bad guy. Just the typical incoherent, internally inconsistent, nonsenical hollywood bad guy.

Now, having listened to some of Yellowman's easy listening reggea I am willing to consider that these could be something to the evil-albino trope...

Posted by: Tulkinghorn on May 17, 2006 at 9:16 AM | PERMALINK

That list is a put-on. Sure there are some albino heavies, but it also lists Laurence Olivier's Hamlet as not only an albino but as an EVIL albino.
