Even more interesting than the media's fixation on McCain's "straight-talkin'" is Kevin and the rest of the lefty blogosphere's fixation on the media's fixation. I think they're getting worried already.

Now had Senator McCain told this crowd that as President he'd raise their taxes - then I'd be impressed.

Bob Newhart once did a guest spot on MadTV. He was in a skit where he was a shrink, and his patient was telling him her problems..."I'm agoraphobic, doctor, and..." and his solution was to just yell "CUT IT OUT!" or "STOP!" at her.
This reminds me of that.
McCain DOES talk straight - this is exactly who he is. It's liberals who misread him "Oh, he's just talking to Falwell to placate the base" every single time. The guy is a conservative republican and supporter of the Iraq war. Vote accordingly.

When McCain sits Falwell, Dobson, and Robertson down and tells them, "stop the bullsh*t!"
I'll believe him.
Till then, just another Republican gas bag in a suit sucking up to his benefactors and patrons.

Wow, what a plan! Or ... not.
Actually, I'd support McCain in this initiative, if only because he'd probably wind up hanging in crispy pieces from a bridge somewhere in Iraq.
Everybody's happy!

Reminds me of Bush's statements about gas prices in 1999:
Mr. Bush was critical of Al Gore in the 2000 campaign for being part of the administration that's been in charge while the price of gasoline has gone steadily upward. In December 1999, in the first Republican primary debate, Mr. Bush said President Clinton must jawbone OPEC members to lower prices.
As gas topped a record level of $50 a barrel this week, Mr. Bush has shown no propensity to personally pressure, or jawbone, Mideast oil producers to increase output.
A spokesman for the president reportedly said in March that Mr. Bush will not personally lobby oil cartel leaders to change their minds.
http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2004/09/28/politics/main646142.shtml
While Bush was quick to blame the Clinton administration for relatively modest increases in gas prices, he accepts none for the massive increase in gasoline prices over the last 2 years that have far outstripped any increase during Clinton's 8 years in office.

I just posted this over at Tapped on this very issue:
God, I cannot tell you people how much i really hate John McCain. And because of this hatered, how much i am really going to enjoy watching him fail to get the GOP nomination in 08.
Apart from his alleged "hawkness" on the war on terrorism, what makes this guy a Rep.? He agrees with Kennedy on education and illegal immigration issues. He just voted to give illegals SS benefits. He agrees with Feingold on campaign-finance and how he would rather have a "clean government" than the protections of the First Amendment.
Hopefully, our voters in Iowa and NH will not select him because of his upposed "electability" ala John Kerry and reject him because he is, like Kerry, a loser.

1) he believes this would work
2) a lot of people want to believe that the solutions are really this simple, it just takes the "guts" to act this simply.

Funny, that was the DMN's reason for endorsing Bush for reelection. As I recall, the staff editorial actually included the sentence "It's called guts." What the hell was that? A movie trailer?
Since when did Bush ever demonstrate guts?

Seriously- why wait until January 2009? McCain says stuff like this because he knows no one will ever call his bluff.
No one will also point out the obvious subtext- that Bush, Rumsfeld et al. are incompetent eggheads who can't get the warring parties to 'cut the crap'. Only the Arizona Avenger can.
My gut tells me McCain has the Curse of Joe Lieberman- people like him until he starts campaigning and talking. Remember, Joe was the only candidate in 2004 who LOST support the more he campaigned.

He said it was ONE thing he would do. Henever suggested it was a comprehensive plan.
Asking him to prognosticate what his Iraq policy should be in 2008 is idiotic; we're not even sure whether it will already be a democracy by then, or merely well on its way. He'll have to adjust his strategy accordingly, if he wins.

Edo-- I wouldn't ask any presidential hopeful what to do in Iraq in 2008 until at least 2007. The situation is so fluid that it's simply meaningless. The same logic doesn't apply to, say, healthcare or social security, because the underlying dynamics of those situations are unlikely to significiantly change between now and 2008.

I assume that exactly the same approach will resolve such matters as Northern Ireland, Kurdistan, Darfur, etc. Why didn't somebody think of this before?
Posted by: chasmrich on May 24, 2006 at 4:42 PM | PERMALINK
CJ, no, the universe is not ready for american hawk making a very fair point.
McCain didn't say "if i were to be elected president in 2008." He said "if i were president," which is a construction that means "if i were president right now."
His plan, notion, idea, or whatever you want to call it is completely and totally nuts. It's so simple-minded that even george bush could have thought of it (and who knows, perhaps he has).
telling other people that their concerns are "bullshit" may well play to the american hawks of this nation, but it doesn't do a thing to solve problems. to try and pick the single most comparable, you couldn't sit the israelis and palestinians down and tell them to "stop the bullshit," unless your goal was to give them something to agree on: that you are an idiot.
nor was it the approach that george mitchell used in northern ireland, to pick another comparable.
it's an approach you use when a couple of men in your unit aren't getting along because of some triviality. it's not an approach you use when there are deeply embedded differences, which is, of course, why everyone with knowledge of iraq foresaw post-war problems....
Posted by: howard on May 24, 2006 at 4:44 PM | PERMALINK
I wonder if anyone on the planet has the balls to go to McCain and ask him if it might have been more productive for President Kennedy to sit Ho Chi Minh and Ngo Dinh Diem down and tell them to 'stop the bullshit', since it's such a logical, winning plan.
McCain might have well just called a press conference to announce he will continue to fail in Iraq if elected. I predict McCain's winning combo of shameless pandering (accompanied by explanations he is just 'doing it for crazy base land') and pronouncements like this one are going to be big winners in 2008. For Hillary Clinton.
