THE WAITING IS OVER....Eighteen months ago:

One senior administration official said Treasury Secretary John W. Snow can stay as long as he wants, provided it is not very long.

Well, they finally did it! It turns out that "not very long" in the Bush White House means a year and a half. Here's all you probably need to know about Snow's replacement, Goldman Sachs CEO Henry Paulson:

But the White House spent months trying to find a prominent Wall Street figure to replace Snow, only to run into reluctance by many to take the cabinet job when economic policy was being set inside the White House.

So how did Paulson get suckered into the job? What kind of promises do you think they made to him? And how long will it be before he realizes they have no intention of honoring them?

As Atrios points out, Paulson is the chair of the Nature Conservancy, which supports the Kyoto Protocal and taking measurable steps to slow global warming. My guess is that POV won't play too well in the White House.

He'll be told what to say and when to say it. If he doesn't do as he's told, he'll get a tongue-lashing and be given one more chance. If he STILL shows any sign of being his own man, he'll be cut out of policy meetings, and his office will be forbidden to issue any communications whatsoever without them first being cleared by the WH.

Simple enough...

He should have thought of this when he was screwing that goat while the cameras were rolling. I'm just sayin'.

Maybe someone, anyone was finally willing to take the job now that the clock is ticking on the Fourth Reich, and a cabinet post always looks good on your CV. Anyway, what difference does it make who sits in that chair? Rove knows all!

I give Paulsen 6 months. That's about how long it will take before he realizes that his job is to be a mouthpiece for whatever fiscal lunacy the White House comes out with.

And I'll bet his first indication of the nature of the problem comes when he learns about new Treasury policy via the Washington Post--and has to call the White House to find out what, exactly, the policy is that his department has issued without his knowledge.

I humbly submit that it takes me eighteen months to do anything, a common trait I wish I did not share with the Bush administration.

It's not JUST that's he's the Chairman of the Nature Conservancy. He also is an advocate for including the environmental impact of corporations in assessing values and earnings. It's a point I agree with, but even among the left, it's a pretty radical philosophy.
I assume he got some assurances on global warming or something. And he's going to find out soon enough that the only position that the treasury secretary has in the Bush White House is bent over with ankles in hands.
I hope after the royal screwing, he takes his money and invests heavily in campaigning against the Republican idiocy.

Considering what is going to happen in the economy in the coming year, only an extreme risktaker would assume the Treasury post. No power, and the responsibility for failure will surely be left in his InBox.

But perhaps, living in Manhattan, he hasnt heard about the Phoenix, Florida and Las Vegas housing markets. He will.

Goldman Sachs has been promised ownership of the Internet.

This makes the twentieth company who has been promised ownership of the Internet. Actual ownership of Internet is currently in the hands of the Texas Rangers who haven't a clue what to do with it. Of course, news of the ownership change hasn't leaked out yet because it would be a crime to report such a transaction -- national security, yada yada.

He probably figures it will look good on his resume, and if ever there is a GOP administration that actually wants to govern, he can apply for the job.

And meanwhile, nothing will be his fault.

Since he's already got money, it's not a bad career calculation.

After months of careful search, the Bush appointment team finally settled on Henry Paulson, brother of Pat Paulson the frequent candidate for president.

Said one administration official, we were determined to find someone who could give the equities market confidence in our policy.

Henry Paulson, currently night janitor at NYC Goldman Sachs office said he was pleased as punch and will provide whatever confidence is needed as long has the benefits are good and the office air conditioned.

Do you have any actual basis for saying that promises that won't be kept were made to Paulson, or are you just exhibiting some patented Kevin Drum paranoia?

Maybe he signed up with the Cheney Plan--he gets to keep his day job as a hobby, with stock options and everything.

A word of advice, Hank. There's some weird stuff going on with the stock markets in the Middle East. Good luck with everything! C-ya!

Since you deny global warming exists, Chickenhawk, or at least deny that it is caused by humans, how do you feel about Paulson's stance on glaobal warming? The fact is that he's arguably to the left of Gore on this issue.

But you'll continue to whistle past the graveyard. Tou are a tool. And a rather dull one, at that.

looks like the markets loved that news. the Dow's down almost 200 points today... again.

after hitting that record, last month, the markets have been in free fall (not literally, because they've had to slow down trading on the really bad days).

"...only to run into reluctance by many to take the cabinet job when economic policy was being set inside the White House."

Hmmm - so even plutocrats are worried about the competence factor here, and not just getting advantaged? Can we leverage the fact that they too don't want the economy run into the ground, even if supposedly for the benefit of their class?

"[what I see here is] the haves, and the have more's. I call 'em my base." - GWB

Even they aren't base enough to put up with a crockonomy anymore.

"Rove knows all!"

BTW, when is *Jason Leopold* going to get frog-marched by angry progressives in lieu of Rove, or will Rove finally go? Must we wait through Fitz of July, Fitzor Day, Fitzoween, Fitzgiving's Day, ...?
Please, I need some honest scoop, not poop.

The market showered its love on the new Secretary of the Treasury today.

How is the economy going stupids?

What a knee-slapper! You are such a kidder! Or else you were fast asleep during the tenures of the past two Treasury Secretaries.

Posted by: nemo on May 31, 2006 at 12:02 AM | PERMALINK

Given that the last two Treasury secretaries were effectively shit on by the White House it is fucking amazing that Bolten talked Paulson into taking the job.

You have to wonder what the secret terms and arrangements and assurances were. I mean, nothing about Paulson and/or the Bush White House suggests there'd be any kind of fit, any community of interest. And were Paulson to be the third Treasury secretary to quit or be ousted can't look good.

But I love the idea of the head of Goldman taking orders from a 25 year old staffer in the White House whose understanding of the financial markets comes from possessing a communications degree from Texas A&M.

Bush misleads again:

Bush told the press on May 25 that John Snow "has not talked to me about resignation." That was five days after Bush had offered the Treasury job to Paulson.

As Kleiman opines, when his lips are moving, Bush is deceiving!
