CNN RETURNS TO ARUBA....Here's the front page at CNN right now, and I just have to ask: are they trying to become a parody of themselves? They aren't even bothering to pretend there's any news in the case, either. It's just a one-year retrospective. Here's how they justify themselves:
The unfolding investigation had all the dramatic elements needed to captivate television audiences, said [Theodore] Simon, who has commented widely on the case.
"An American on an idyllic island supposedly celebrating her graduation goes missing under less than clear circumstances," he said.
Needless to say, Simon didn't have to bother mentioning that Holloway was an "18-year-old, 5-foot-4-inch blonde," because CNN had already said it for him several paragraphs earlier.
In any case, it's yet more bad timing from the White House, which probably didn't realize they were foolishly announcing a new Treasury Secretary on the anniversary of Natalee Holloway's disappearance. Who knows? If Henry Paulson were an 18-year-old, 5-foot-4-inch blonde, maybe they could have convinced CNN to cover it as actual news.

AND, he'd get more attention at cabinet meetings!

At this moment, I can't see the Treasury Secretary story anywhere on the front page. Even the links to the politics section go to other "stories".

In comments this morning at the local paper's story on Harry Reid, some halfwit trotted out the old "No mention of Reid at cnn! Bias, I say!"
If this doesn't prove beyond a shadow of a doubt that the media have a sensationalist bias above all else, nothing will.

Nobody wants to hear about the boring old Treasury Sec. He, after all, can only effect your income and prosperity. The cute blonde, of course, provides all sorts of fantasy fodder that Americans can use RIGHT NOW without even having to think too hard.

Liberals at CNN realize nobody watches them anymore because of their liberal bias. People who want serious news watch Fox News and read the Washington Times and National Review.

Cheer up - this pushed that pathetic piece re Senator Reid (see Talkingpointsmemo for details) off their top stories. But now MSNBC is running the same version of the CNN spin on this. Is Karl Rove now writing copy for the MSM?

How true! Perky blondes are definitely a liberal concept.

Why did Google not memorialize this anniversary on their home page? Do they have something against American blonde tourists who go missing on tropical isles? Quickly, get my lather!

Now if she can be linked to an illegal Latino alien the story will take up the full hour on Lou Dobbs tonight. Otherwise, he will only give her 40 minutes. Pathentic.

Only if Mr Paulson were willing to take off more clothing than is customary for a treasury secretary, or for that matter, the head of Goldman Sachs.

What's the matter, Kevin? Is CNN too busy reporting on stories that people actually care about to fulfill its usual job of regurgitating democrat talking points?
Posted by: American Hawk on May 30, 2006 at 3:33 PM | PERMALINK
DC sniper verdict now lead story, as it should be.
Please note the bombs in Iraq today -- 40-plus dead on the heels of yesterday's 40-plus dead -- rate no mention.
But of course CNN's really liberal!

It pains me to admit that I'm with Hawk on this one. Compare the "top stories" to the "most popular" stories. Consistently the top stories are less shallow and more newsworthy than the most popular ones. CNN is reponding to their audience, something anyone wanting to stay in business is required to do.

There just haven't been enough disappearing blondes lately. If you will excuse me, I am off to buy a bottle of hair dye and get my picture taken. Honey, if you are reading this, please tell the kids Mom loves them. I'll be back when I get a book deal.

The lead story on FoxNews.com is currently
Bikini Slay Probe
Few leads in strangle case
Cops interviewing several 'persons of interest' in strangulation death of Clemson junior
"Bikini Slay Probe" comes directly from the New York Sun school of headline writing. Now what was that the resident troll was saying about Fox providing real news?
Posted by: theo on May 30, 2006 at 3:45 PM | PERMALINK
enozhino, maybe cnn's shallow stories are its most popular because they've driven away the portion of their audience that craves actual news.

I wish Henry Paulson were an 18-year-old, 5-foot-4-inch blonde chick. Especially if said blonde chick proved to be a brilliant Treasurey Secretary. But let me point out that Holloway is not that attractive. I mean, if we were at a party and I'd had enough to drink fine, but meeting on the street (or at a casino?) well I'd rather say... "Hi there, does your cute friend have a name?"
For some reason the idea of young hot women who are incredibly good at difficult jobs makes me hawt.

But just head over to CNN International and the lead story is about hope fading for Indonesian earthquake survivors. In the States I guess they have to dumb-down the news to try and attract Fox viewers. Sad.
BTW the international version also shows the Daily Show every weekend.

The New York Sun? Was this Clemson junior a heavy right-wing supporter of Israel?

CNN is reponding to their audience, something anyone wanting to stay in business is required to do.
enozinho: I think that's what they used to call "pandering."
To the extent "news" is simply another form of entertainment, then I guess we can have the Puppy News Channel, and the Missing Blondes News Channel, and the Female Democratic Politician Panty-Sniffing Channel.
But to the extent journalism is a profession, and that it is possible at least roughly to properly judge what current events are weightier than others, then "responding to their audience" is not the only criterion by which news stands or falls.
Shallow, blinkered judgment, driven only by overnights and quarterly profit statements, are not what builds lasting businesses, much less professions.

SOooooooo Kevvie, How do you Justify being a Tax Loss?
===================================
That's how the Washington Monthly, New Republic, and National Review have survived these many decades. They don't make money for their owners, but neither do they bleed so much red ink that they bankrupt them. Occasionally, they can provide useful tax losses, but the rewards of owning a Little Magazine aren't financial. They're psychic and emotional: the prestige associated with running a high-brow publication, the pride in helping to launch journalistic careers, and the frisson derived from influencing public debate on important matters.

And yet, pundits like Kevin trust the sensationalistic press when it comes to things like Terrarists!
As Kevin, or Yglesias, or Beinart, or Klein, or anyone at the NYT or TNR would say, "Well, everyone knows that missing white women are an overhyped ratings-getting non-story, but WHAT ABOUT THE TERRORISTS UNDER OUR BEDS?! How can the Democrats be taken seriously by us serious people if they don't address the SCARY Jihadislmasofascists!?"
