PATRIOTIC CAT BLOGGING....The treasonous critters here at the Washington Monthly's West Coast headquarters declined to cooperate with today's efforts to memorialize them in patriotic poses, so I gave up. Instead, here are a couple of rare, previously unpublished shots from 2003's Patriotic Felines world tour.

Have a happy 4th! See you tomorrow.

Hey, isn't that against the law and stuff?

Posted by: Henry Reed on July 4, 2006 at 12:55 PM | PERMALINK

seriously, we need a constitutional amendment to stop this sort of thing.

Posted by: Ryan on July 4, 2006 at 1:02 PM | PERMALINK

Under the proposed amendment, would placing animals on our beloved emblem be considered criminal flag desecration?

Posted by: Michael7843853 G-O in 08! on July 4, 2006 at 1:02 PM | PERMALINK

Cats translate Independence Day quite differently from we mere mortals. They're probably wondering why you aren't independent for the other 364 days of the year.

Posted by: Ben on July 4, 2006 at 1:02 PM | PERMALINK

Hey, that's flag desecration! Do you know where those cats have been?

America, America,
Cat shed his fur on thee...

Posted by: charlie don't surf on July 4, 2006 at 1:25 PM | PERMALINK

I think it's cat desecration.

Posted by: mg56 on July 4, 2006 at 1:58 PM | PERMALINK

I use a flag for kitty litter, too!

Posted by: Hostile on July 4, 2006 at 2:00 PM | PERMALINK

Doesn't it just make ya wanna bundle that flag around that kitty like a sack, whip it around a few times, and hurl it as far into the air as you can?

Would that be illegal if the flag ammendment passed?

When does the Bush bashing start?

Posted by: Frequency Kenneth on July 4, 2006 at 2:05 PM | PERMALINK

Flag desecration is in the eye of the beholder. Years ago I represented a young man of scruffy appearance. He had bought a hearse because it was cheap transportation. He put floral curtains in the rear windows. Then he sewed U.S. flags on the curtains.

He got busted in upstate rural New York. Why had he displayed the flag that way? He was making what he s saw as a patriotic gesture. The sheriff and the prosecutor were unmoved. Displaying a flag in connection with a hearse and being a hippy combined to represent a felony.

It didn't go to trial. I managed to interest a newspaper. The defendant was a decorated veteran (Viet Nam). When the newspaper began to ask questions about whether there was a list somewhere that enumerated the ways in which a veteran could display the flag, the prosecutor dropped the charge.

Had he not been a veteran, he would, I think have picked up a criminal record.

Posted by: ursus on July 4, 2006 at 2:07 PM | PERMALINK

Clearly intent has a lot to do with it. If the cat starts retching and jumps on the flag it would be a violation. If the cat is just appreciating the color, texture, and smell of the flag at close range it would be OK. Party membership of the owner is a mitigating circumstance.

What was the penalty for flag desecration supposed to be anyway?

Posted by: B on July 4, 2006 at 2:20 PM | PERMALINK

Cats ultimately celebrate Independence Day EVERY DAY.

Who do you think you're trying to fool, Drum? Liberal cats aren't patriotic; they hate this country and everything it stands for, just like you and every other liberal in this country. Liberalism is an insidious disease, and Ann Coulter's new book is the cure. I dare you to read it. It will open your eyes, and you'll finally see how much damage the Church of Liberalism has done to the land of the free and the home of the brave.

Liberal pussies trying to wrap themselves in Old Glory ... oh, the shame of it all.

Hey, North Korea is setting off fireworks too!

It's so touching that they care.

Posted by: B on July 4, 2006 at 5:39 PM | PERMALINK

I thought Ann was the pet of the Republican party. Doesn't she just spew hairballs ?

As for cats, my cat is an uberrepublican - everything, everyone exist solely for his support and amusement. The dog is a democrat.

Ah cats, the last example of true freedom in this country. Cats have it made. Their agenda: eat, sleep, play with catnip, and tear things up when they're bored, even though you've given them more than enough to play with.

Just like Republicans.

Posted by: Mark on July 4, 2006 at 8:08 PM | PERMALINK

A disgrace that you don't pay tribute (not even once) to our troops on July 4th, the most sacred day in American history. This is why liberals are seen as un-American. You really don't have the right to call yourself an American. All you liberals care about is power and banning God from America. You're a disgrace.

Posted by: ernie on July 4, 2006 at 8:14 PM | PERMALINK

Hey Ernie, the Fourth is about the independence(the end) not the means(sometimes unfortunately involving violence). You celebrate the occasionally questionable means; we celebrate the always glorious, if never completely attainable, end.

Posted by: Michael7843853 G-O in 08! on July 4, 2006 at 9:17 PM | PERMALINK

Lots more 4th of July pictures at Instapundit.

(What is it about self-absorbed Democrat men and the pictures they post? I don't know if "effeminate" is the right word. Look at Instapundit and you see what kind of pictures right-of-center men post.)

Posted by: Frequency Kenneth on July 4, 2006 at 9:29 PM | PERMALINK

can someone explain why it is good to be patriotic? one is american (for the most part) because of an accident of birth. do people go around celebrating their eye color?

Posted by: lucretius on July 4, 2006 at 9:32 PM | PERMALINK

Urgent bulletin: Google is showing cats dancing around with American flags in its logo! This must be to compensate for their "disgraceful" failure to recognize Memorial Day awhile back - the rightie bloggers really have them running scared. But why cats? Conservatives are "dog" people and democrats are "cat" people - the Googlekings are showing their hand...

Posted by: Neil' on July 4, 2006 at 10:15 PM | PERMALINK

Apparently the frequency for Kenneth now is TWO inane comments for every post.

Posted by: floopmeister on July 4, 2006 at 11:08 PM | PERMALINK

Conservatives are "dog" people and democrats are "cat" people

Nothing against canines, but we can only hope this is so. Cats have become far more popular as pets than dogs over the past few decades.

Oh, and why is it "conservatives" and "Democrats"? Should't you substitute "Republicans" for the former, or "liberals" or "progressives" for the latter?

Posted by: Vincent on July 5, 2006 at 12:01 AM | PERMALINK

"One wonders what pets Ann Coulter owns. "

Some may wonder this, I on the other hand wonder what pets she eats.

If it hadn't been for His Imperial Majesty, Imperious Moron George the Decider (hey, Frequency Kenneth... Bush bashing starts now -- just to make you happy) we wouldn't have to be paying any tributes to the troops frying or being blown up in the desert; they'd be here, with us, enjoying their beer and fireworks in the company of their families and friends.

As things are, I can't help wondering... Will those who survive and come back (as they're likely to, in time to crank up the electoral results for the Republicans... why not use the soldiers twice?) be able to enjoy the 4th of July fireworks? Ever? Without ducking for cover, because the sound reminds them of those roadside bombs?

On a different subject... Neil, what's the basis for your statement that "Conservatives are "dog" people and democrats are "cat" people "? Is it that liberals are more numerous in densely populated areas (city apartments), where they're less likely to have dogs as pets, while the right-wing nuts are more likely to have big yards for the dogs to run in?

True, cats are more independent (not at all obedient) than dogs, which is a liberal/progressive characteristic. But, at the same time, they're utterly selfish -- a "conservative" characteristic.

Dogs, OTOH... Will try to protect you, regardless of danger to themselves, unselfishly -- a very liberal/progresive characteristic (well, OK. Not Joe Lieberman, bless his little heart ).

Being a dog lover myself, it is my considered opinion that both cats and dogs are liberal/progressive pets. Pets suitable for "conservatives" (the quotation marks are deliberate -- what do the neo-cons "conserve"?) are: sheep (just look at the Republican Congress) and parrots (ditto. Plus, there's the "caged bird" element which should appeal).

I would also suggest basilisk as a replacement for elephant; much more accurate.

Fighting words.

The day I pose my dog an American (or other) flag, Photoshop silly hats onto her head, or talk about her like a she's a child instead of complete and whole in her glorious dogness, I hope someone will shoot me.

I had a great 4th of July celebration, and these cats look like they did to.

Posted by: Andrea on July 5, 2006 at 10:10 AM | PERMALINK

Kevin, why do you hate America? Is it because you have effeminate cats that are sucking your vital fluids right out of you? If you didn't have those proto-communist felines corrupting your inner essences, you might have the cojones to post manly pictures of tanks running over mudhuts, missile attacks on mudhuts, flamethrowers roasting mudhuts, bullets piercing mudhuts, and tiny white tots with faces painted r/w/b sitting on their moms' laps waving tiny american flags made out of apple pie.

Forshame you godless liberal!

Ernie,
I believe the flag pole is to display Old Glory, not to be stuck up where you seem to have it.

Happy Fourth All. As a liberal veteran cat-lover, this is your pest boast yet, or is that your best post yet?

Let Freedom ring, and the can opener sing!

At the risk of sounding like a humorless prig, I must admit that your photos of cats sitting on a flag are more offensive to me than the act of burning a flag. After all, when a person burns a flag, they acknowledge its role as a national symbol. It's a political act that derives its meaning from the power of the flag as a symbol.

On the other hand, allowing a flag to be a backdrop for a cat picture is just the opposite (even for the 4th) It's a careless disregard for the symbol -- and all too common. I am not angered by flag burners, but by those who put them out once and then let them stay there night and day in all weather and allow them to fade and wear away into tatters. That's disrepect for the flag...and so is allowing it to be a cat blanket.

Having been brought up in a family that raised and lowered the flag each day and cared for it properly (and yes, also an anti-Iraq war, pro-single-payer, pro-choice leftie) I don't like to see the flag demeaned or disrespected. I can't imagine ever burning the flag, though sometimes I think we might want to soak the blood out of it and give it a good washing -- but one thing burning the flag doesn't do is diminish the metaphoric power of the flag.

Did you all notice the Google banner on July 4th. Two "fat" cats/ "fat cats" waving American flags. Are the Google "boys" sending a sarcastic message?
