By: THE UNDERCARD....Ed Kilgore writes today about the other primary on August 8: Cynthia McKinney vs. Hank Johnson for the championship of Dekalb County, Georgia.

Any Dem. who asked for a Rep. ballot to vote against Reed, for example, won't be able to vote now in the Dem. run-off against McKinney. It's funny....she stands up for herself and is fiercely stubborn (and consistent). And that's viewed as uppity and nutty and unladylike. But when Incompetent -in-Chief behaves the same way shrilling about a nonreality, he's at least given a head nod to his resoluteness. I'm sorry, for the most part the reaction to Congresswoman McKinney is sexist and racist. It just is. Does she love inflamatory rhetoric? Of course, but at least she doesn't make sh** up relating to Natl Security like Curt Weldon with his infamous and missing Atta chart or like Hoekstra with his joint press conference with Santorum declaring WMD found in Iraq or how about that fellow who put a crown on Rev. Moon and the list goes on. McKinney loves to use inflamatory rhetoric about race and seems to have difficulty keeping her cool, however if I had to sit in a body everyday where just getting the Voting Rights Act renewed is a controversy and where other members claim that there is no more racism or discrimination, maybe I too would think that the whole world was like that. If Dems are to maintain a extraordinary majority of blacks in the Dem Party they'd do well to get rid of extremists like McKinney. Most blacks are pretty conservative, all in all, issue by issue. BTW, do double check any controversial quotes you hear attributed to McKinney; they often seem to have the same accuracy as those attributed to Gore (e.g. "invented the Internet", Love Story). For an alternate perspective, check out the link: I live in the district. McKinney has real problems in Dekalb north of I-20 because she has never made ANY EFFORT AT ALL to reconcile with her significant Jewish constituency. There was some long gone contriversy having to do with Farakhan, and then her father, an important figure in Georgia politics, made some antisemitic remarks in 2002, which McKinney has never addressed. This makes Democratic unity difficult in my precinct. Jewish Democrats in Dekalb express the feeling that they don't have any representation. McKinney seems to have completely written off North Dekalb. She never comes out here at all. I'm actually neutral in the primary. Hank Johnson, a long-time County Commisioner from South Dekalb, has really let my neighborhood down on the Commision. After watching uninformed and indifferent performances from Hank Johnson time after time at Commission meetings with 500 angry homeowners on one side and 500 realtors and developers on the other, I just can't bring myself to pull the lever for him. So it seems, there are still quite a few potential voters out there for McKinney. Which candidate can shake the trees better for votes not cast in the primary? I'm a liberal white male living in the city of Decatur (north-central DeKalb) and I voted for McKinney in the general election in 2004 (good voting record; why put another Republican in the House?). I voted for Johnson in the primary. I did stay up to listen to her post-election speech at 1 am after the election and I do have to say that I was impressed. She's kooky but like Bubb Rubb said, there are many other (and worse in my opinion) louses and crazies and corrupted in Congress already. She's no MLK (obviously) but she had the similar speaking style of black ministers/political activists. Her speech was a populist radical critique of the status quo. And you know what? - Who cares! If more people stood up to Bush, his cronies, and his policies like McKinney, maybe we wouldn't have the messes that we have now. Unfortunately, people have already tuned her out.
