RUMOR CENTRAL....Ray LaHood has publicly called for ending the congressional page program because "some members [of Congress] betray their trust by taking advantage of them." It seems like LaHood might be using the word some advisedly:

As the scandal over former congressman Mark Foley entered its sixth day, one Republican warned that there may even be further disclosures involving other politicians. "People are very, very concerned," said Representative Ray LaHood, an Illinois Republican. "They think there are going to be more disclosures."

Hmmm. A friend emailed this morning to say that he's heard "there are two more Republican members about to get swept up in this thing." Is LaHood hearing the same thing?

Republicans can't manage a program comprising--
what?--50 to 75 pages right there in their building? So can they manage anything... like the Iraq war?

Ending the page program might not be a bad idea. After Studds and Crane there was a serious effort to reform the program. Those reforms are meaningless unless the Leadership of the House is willing to protect the Pages from people like Rep Foley. If they aren't, then the Page program probably should be ended. There will be other Foleys in the future. In Washington some people equate sex with power and if they have power they will abuse the power for sex.

Hmmm. A friend emailed this morning to say that he's heard "there are two more Republican members about to get swept up in this thing."

I'm hearing something different. I heard two Democrats are going to be outed as gay pedophiles and swept up in this thing. I won't tell you their names right now, but the initials of one of them is BF. Remember when this happens, I was the first one to report it.

Posted by: Al on October 5, 2006 at 1:32 PM | PERMALINK

I don't know what LaHood is hearing, but you're hearing him right: he's getting plural on us.

So LaHood thinks maybe the pages should stop flirting and go home. The administration has offered an alternative solution, if we could just stop playing jailbait grabass long enough to pay attention: Rather than abolish the page program, abolish Congress. It's not like they're serving any useful purpose.

Posted by: Peabody on October 5, 2006 at 1:38 PM | PERMALINK

What the hell do they have to 'reform' anything for. The problem is obvious: Republican Congresscritters can't keep their hands off young male boys. Solution: Get rid of Republican Congresscritters.

I guarantee you this solution has occurred to the average American citizen...

Of course you are: If I were the GOP, I'd be handling this like the Enron scandal: try to muddy the waters by pointing fingers at Democrats. I'm sure that any Democrat congressperson who has exchanged more than two words with a page is a target.

I'm also sure that the RNC is right now running round ex-pages with an open checkbook and an offer of AEI or Heritage gig if they'd accuse a Democrat of impropriety.

Sounds like he's treating it more like 'taking one for the team'. He'll be big about it, and accept blanket responsibility for "whatever it is that occured" on his watch.

GOP alludes to something I haven't seen discussed: The kids who have been the victims here are the sons of high-powered, big-money Republican donors. The tentacles of this scandal could really reach out all across the country and affect the Republican party apparatus in every single state.

Als probably right, the only way for the GOP to kill this scandle is to be able to say the dems did it too. Worked with Abramoff. I'm sure Rove operatives are working on this 24/7.

"Find me a page who will say a dem hit on him, damnit how much do I pay you f-heads. Find me that page. And make sure he's a minor."

As long as the dems do it too, its apparently ok. I can't stand the moral relativism of the GOP.

Oh brother, but we all know that Louis Freeh, the "9/11 was Clinton's fault" partisan FBI leader will keep this so-called investigation under complete wraps.

It's really quite the joke isn't it?

Posted by: Cheryl on October 5, 2006 at 2:33 PM | PERMALINK

Okay, I've had enough of this. We don't shutdown schools because there are predatory folks who pray on young people there. No. We try to get to the gist of what is going on and correct it. If they can't manage a small program like that then, well, yeah, WTF are they doing conjuring up laws for the United States of America?!

Posted by: parrot on October 5, 2006 at 2:33 PM | PERMALINK

How fitting. Louis Freeh, the Congressional GOP's hatchet man on Bill Clinton is now in charge of a partisan cover-up.

From "Freeh at Last: Revenge and Revisionism at the FBI"

"Eager to improve his image tarnished by the Ruby Ridge cover-up and the Richard Jewell Atlanta bombing fiasco, Freeh became a reliable servant and source of leaks for Republican committeemen in Congress. In the FileGate case, Freeh became an outright water carrier for the GOP. While the Clinton administration claimed this was merely a bureaucratic snafu (a conclusion backed four years later by a three judge panel), Freeh played the martyr, claiming, "the FBI and I were victimized." In 1997, Freeh's FBI leaked information to the Washington Post about Chinese contributions to Democratic campaigns and even went so far as to brief Congressional Republicans."

Posted by: AngryMan on October 5, 2006 at 2:35 PM | PERMALINK

"Yes, of course, Barney Frank. Because he's gay, he must be a pedophile, right Al?"

Amazing - Barney Frank has a 31 year old lover who is trash - and whose actions affects the reputation of the House only in a sideways way - Frank goes to the well of the House and says sorry and notes he had ended the relationship 6 months earlier - and gets re-elected with 70% of the vote or more every election thereafter -

and this is all the GOP can throw out to defend their child predator sex scandal coverup by a dozen GOP leadership types?

I thought they would at least go back to the 1973 Gary Studs of Cape Cod Mass going on vacation to Europe - where you stop being a minor at 16 - and hooking up with a 17 year old. When the GOP needed a Dem to offset their own 1983 sex scandal at the time they reached back to 73 and used Studs fling (albeit the young man was a page - although no sex occurred in any location where he was considered a minor). This at least has "gay" and "page" and Dem as part of the story. Of course Gary Studs was also re-elected many times after the GOP hanging in 83

Seems the GOP are really getting desparate as they see that GOP as party of values selling point go down the drain, with the Dems emerging as the party of values.

Posted by: dee on October 5, 2006 at 2:38 PM | PERMALINK

Parrot,

I would agree, but in nearly every case involving a school there are decent teachers, a school prinicpal, superintenedent and school board all protecting the kids from predatory teachers. In this case the "powers that be" decided they would just look the other way. The problem isn't Foley, it is the house leadership who put their love of power above their duty to the young people in their charge.

This is a point that I think needs to be made, and the average Poly Animal troll needs to wake up and see the light.

Here's the deal--Rep. Mark Foley was a butt pirate.

I can't think of a better term to describe what he was. He used his power and his prestige to cover up the fact that he was on a rampage. He went around trying to be the best butt pirate in the entire House of Representatives. He boarded ships, stole the gold and went after every sweet little underage butt that he could. He wandered around drunk, trying to find someone to open up their safe harbor for him to dock his butt pirate ship. He was and probably always will be nothing more than a degenerate butt pirate.

And he's a Republican. And election day is just around the corner. The shrill cry you hear from the Trolletariat is the realization that every single voter in America will know Mark Foley is a butt pirate when they step into the voting booth.

Orwell is as unbelievably stupid as ever. Never mind all the pages who've come forward and said that Foley made advances toward them when they were kids, Dredge's "story" is the defense of every online predator ever. What -- "the kids made me do it"??? "I was just joking"???

Puh-leeze.

That's right up there with, "I swear officer, she told me she was eighteen!"

The new Washington Monthly server needs to automatically filter out mouth breathers So Orwell and Jay can spend more time working on improving their basic cognitive skills.

Posted by: Osama_Been_Forgotten on October 5, 2006 at 4:19 PM | PERMALINK

Jay,

When the "opposition" has nothing of value or intelligence to contribute, it's best that they STFU and let the adults deal with it.

When you can come to the big table and discuss the issue that the Republican Mark Foley was a child predator and the Republican leadership (the party of so-called values and morals)let him do it to hold onto power, instead of opening your ignorant yap so "Clinton" or "Monica" or "Franks" falls out, then you will be respected as another point of view. Try taking some of that "responsibility" that these hypocrites like to shove down our throats (ie. Bennetts gambling, Limp-one's drug abuse, Foley's child diddling...). You know, pull yourself up by the bootstraps, and all that.

Oh yeah, can we give f**king Hitler a break, please? My relatives died in Poland thanks to Nazis and I doubt you know sweet F-A about Hitler and the Nazis...evidenced by your "pee your pants" conviction that a down and out (read "contained" by two no-fly zones and years of sanctions) old has-been like Saddam was even remotely as dangerous or powerful as Hitler was...Jeez I would be surprised if you could even find Germany (never mind Iraq) on a map.

Now if you want to compare Bush and Hitler, or Rummy and Hitler, or Dickhead Cheney and Hitler, you might be on to something....

So why didn't Hastert send him to jail 2 years ago when Hastert knew?

I am curious why there is so much outrage over a homosexual pedophile coming from the left.

That's because of your mental retardation. There's nothing to be curious about, because the outrage is over the COVERUP, and the violation of the online predator laws.

Not about homosexuality, and not about any consensual actual sex between Foley and a legal 16 y/o. (other than that the age of consent should probably be 18, but that's DC's law, so - whatever man.)

The left re-elected Studds, an admitted pedophile, and celebrates homosexuality, so this outrage is a bit disengenous, no?

Like I said - you're confused over what the outrage is about.

Or rather - you're not confused, you're pretending to be confused so you can distract from the REAL argument which is "Republicans Drunk On Power, Abuse that Power. - Elect someone from the opposite party to restore some fucking balance and perspective to our fucked up government."

Posted by: Jay on October 5, 2006 at 5:06 PM | PERMALINK

I took a look on Wikipedia today since I didn't remember the Studds incident. I generally think that people in a position of power should not start affairs with people under them, and especially when those people are young. That said, there are some important differences in these two cases:

Studds was a 36 year old new congressman who had a consensual affair with a male 17 year old page. (Which Jay should understand was above the age of consent at the time and place the affair took place) When the affair came to light 10 years later, this younger man stood up with Studds in support of him at the press conference.

Foley is a 50-plus year old congressman who pursued multiple pages as young as 16, none of whom is claiming any love for him- in fact, the evidence suggests that Foley was pushing, and these kids were reluctant.

Studds was more or less openly gay, and his constituents knew it and reelected him to represent them.

Foley denied his sexuality because he knew his constituents would likely vote him out if they knew.

Studds and his lover did not break any laws, and Studds was a supporter of gay rights.

Foley likely broke laws, some of which he helped write as chair of a committee whose goal was to protect children from online sexual predators.

To me, it's all about the hypocrisy.

This is from Ann Coulter. Priceless.

"Hmmmm, let's search the memory bank. In July 2000, the New York Times "ethicist" Randy Cohen advised a reader that pulling her son out of the Cub Scouts because they exclude gay scoutmasters was "the ethical thing to do." The "ethicist" explained: "Just as one is honor bound to quit an organization that excludes African-Americans, so you should withdraw from scouting as long as it rejects homosexuals.

"We need to get a rulebook from the Democrats:

Boy Scouts: As gay as you want to be.

Priests: No gays!

Democratic politicians: Proud gay Americans.

Republican politicians: Presumed guilty.

White House press corps: No gays, unless they hate Bush.

Active-duty U.S. military: As gay as possible.

Men who date Liza Minelli: Do I have to draw you a picture, Miss Thing?

This is the very definition of political opportunism. If Republicans had decided to spy on Foley for sending overly friendly e-mails to pages, Democrats would have been screaming about a Republican witch-hunt against gays. But if they don't, they're enabling a sexual predator.

If Republicans had decided to spy on Foley for sending overly friendly e-mails to pages, Democrats would have been screaming about a Republican witch-hunt against gays. But if they don't, they're enabling a sexual predator.

And if they'd actually looked into matters when they found out that a fifty year old guy was sending "sick sick sick" emails to teenaged pages (liiiike, maybe reading the emails in question?) instead of ignoring it and keeping it all hush-hush, we'd have little to complain about.

Posted by: pdq on October 5, 2006 at 5:26 PM | PERMALINK

Foley denied his sexuality because he knew his constituents would likely vote him out if they knew. pdq

I was just talking to a relative who was one of Foley's constituents and supporters. He tells me that while Foley was definately in the closet, his homosexuality was kind of an open secret in his district. According to my brother his sexuality just wasn't a problem for many of his supporters.

You have to remember where his district is located--Florida's treasure coast--the land of Palm Beach, Jupiter Island, Admiral's Cove and a bunch of other pretty "liberal" economic Republican enclaves.

Now, from what I have been told, while the homosexuality might not have been a problem, hitting on teenage pages was definately a no-no for his constituents.

Funny you should mention Tip O'Neill's reaction to Stubbs. My understanding from listening to his assistant at the time, Chris Matthews, Tip O'Neill was furious about Stubbs. He would have strung him up if he could.

Jay, the voters kept re-electing Studds, not the party. What part of democracy don't you like? All of it?

People don't care about this pathetic attempt at deflection, Jay. They don't know who Gerry Studds is and they sure as hell don't care what happened in 1983.

Here is the ugly truth that no one wants to address:
The way things stand now, the Republicans are going to loose Congress.
The scandal's are piling up against them, and even if the rumor is false that there are two other Republicans who have a fancy for young boys, the damage is done.

The truth, ugly and unvarnished, and being completeley ignored is that OBL wants the US to remain in Iraq, he wants US to remain doing what we've been doing. OBL wants to bleed us slowly, not to quick or else we'll catch on and do something different. No, slowly, quietly, over time, each minute another drop of of blood lost. Another step taken in the direction that OBL wants us to go in.

So if the Democrats takeover, there will be changes that will run counter to OBL's plans which are an emaciated US foriegn policy of all bark and no bite, leaving him or his successors to proceed as they have planned in the ME.

Take the long view here folks, OBL is a patient man, and as long as GWB does what he's suppose too, things will go as they are.
So, here is where I see us encounting a real nasty problem, real freaking soon:
If OBL views the latest episodes of Republicans screwing his plans up by loosing the elections en masse, OBL will strike the US...hard enough for the Republicans to recover their halos and do something predictable and asinine.
There are too many Americans who have said, "I will glady trade my Constitutional rights and privilidges for a false sense of security, give it to me, now!" And there are to many Republicans who have shown a willingness to accomadate such bargins.
So, lets be prepared because OBL will do whatever he can to ensure that the Republicans stay in office.

Yesterday I posted a link to statistics showing that all quintiles of the U.S. income distribution have more wealth now than in January 2000. Most of Iraq and most of Afghanistan are safer and more civilized than in 2000. Point A) regarding the bandying about of the term pedophile, neither Studds, nor Foley were pedophiles as they were not seeking pre-pubescent children. Whereas the republican hack over in a secretaries position at DHS was seeking pre-pubescent kids he was a pedophile.

Point B) The ratio of the shrillness of Jay and Co. is directly proportional to how far into the gutter the republicans have sunk.

Point C) Those who scream loudest are often the most guilty. See: Foley pushes child predator legislation with himself in mind.

Point D) Self-loathing is a favorite pass-time of republicans. For Evidence See: the entire republican admin which railed against big gov't then enlarged it, railed against spending and we are swimming in the red, railed against nation building (Iraq anyone?), rail against homosexuality while remaining in the closet, claim the bible as the authority on morality then completely ignore it.

One of the many funny things about Denny Hastert's silly lies about Democrats being responsible for his scandal is this: is this really their position? Here's some conservative reaction to the matter:

The Washington Times "House Speaker Dennis Hastert must do the only right thing, and resign his speakership at once."

National Review "Rep. Foley resigned his office when the story broke. Republican conduct since then has fallen rather short of a moral reckoning."

Bay Buchanan "They failed the parents of this country is what they did."

Michael Reagan "Any member of Congress who was aware of the sexual emails and protected the congressman should also resign effective immediately."

David Bossie, president of conservative organization Citizens United "Speaker Hastert had knowledge of Congressman Foleys inappropriate behavior and chose to protect a potential pedophile and powerful colleague over a congressional page."

Michelle Malkin "There is a time and place for attacking the Dems and the MSM. Now is not that time. Parents need assurance that their kids are safe on Capitol Hill. If Beltway GOP elites can't understand this, they are beyond hope."

The Chicago Tribune "If there is more to this story than what officials have acknowledged--that is, if the House leadership's dereliction of duty goes even further--then consequences must be harsh."

Maggie Gallagher "With great power comes great responsibility. Memo to GOP House leaders: Have the decency to accept responsibility and resign from leadership. Or come November, I vote to let the other side put their bums in charge."

Richard Viguerie "...only the most recent example of Republican House leaders doing whatever it takes to hold onto power."

Tony Blankley "In this case, defending Denny Hastert's decisions is ethically wrong, would undermine our party's commitment to the defense of traditional moral values and is politically stupid in the bargain."

Larry Kudlow One final point the mealy-mouthed defense that the instant messages werent known until recently is nonsense. Foleys earlier emails were more than sufficient to sound the alarm that a huge problem was brewing. The IM defense of Hastert is a loser.

Jay: "The Illinois Republican said he is taking full responsibility for not being more aggressive in the investigation of former Rep. Mark Foley's inappropriate communications with two underage pages, but said he only heard about Foley's e-mails and explicit instant messages to one of the pages after it appeared in the press last Friday, Sept. 29."

that just means he is taking no responsibility. "Taking responsibility" means doing something useful or repenting and suffering punishment. Ever since Nixon said "I take full responsibility for ... ," the phrase "I take full responsibility means "I hope to get off scott-free by pretending to take full responsibility."

Even among Republican/conservative commentators who think there are Democrats who share culpability for not acting on their knowledge, no one believes Hastert is telling the truth. Most of the Republicans now in the House voted to impeach Clinton; surely they could have found a way to stop Foley from preying on young pages. They let him continue to engage in behavior that they considered to be an impeachible offense. It is a step in the right direction that Foley resigned as fast as he did; now the rest of the responsible Republicans need to confess, repent, do penance (i.e., resign from positions of power), and then beg for forgiveness.

After the Republicans come clean, then they can claim that some Democrats are culpable as well. It was the Democrats who passed the law making sex with an employee or assistant a crime. Both parties are acting hypocritically; but the people who voted to impeach Clinton had the stronger moral rquirement to control Foley. They are the same people who wanted action against Studds, Frank, Condit, and Clinton.
