UPDATE on the GOP's shrinking cash advantage: Karl Rove's campaign success has generally rested on creating an aura of inevitable dominance. That's obviously a bit tougher this cycle -- and as Greg Sargent points out, his bluff has just been called on the latest campaign finance numbers. Of course, the biggest surprise here is the whistleblower: Ken Mehlman.

Is no one else a little uneasy at Rove and Bush's confidence for this election? I keep waiting for the other shoe to drop. Either one heck of a late October surprise, or vote rigging.

Or they've gotten away with everything so far and simply can't imagine not continuing to. Sure, you would be foolish in any election not to consider the possibility of an "October surprise" of some kind, particularly from these guys, and with Diebold you can never discount the possibility of vote rigging (and, of course, you can rest assured that there will be several local voter suppression efforts by Republicans, one of which has already been unmasked in California.)

But I think the hubris that has so damaged the Bush Administration's policies is also affecting their politics, here.

Money is good, but I seriously don't believe it's everything. Money can take you only so far when other factors intrude. Proof? Two Words: Phil Gramm.

Posted by: trixi on October 20, 2006 at 10:49 AM | PERMALINK

i am with Chris on this one - they have gotten away with so much for so long, they simply can't fathom the possibility that they might actually be held accountable.

When the Gods want to destroy a man, isn't hubris the quality they sieze upon?

Posted by: Global Citizen on October 20, 2006 at 11:06 AM | PERMALINK

If memory serves me right, it's whom gods would destroy, they first make mad.

Hmmmm...seems to fit after all.

Truly a shame that Madonna did not adopt Thomasl.
Then, he would have had more spending money to give to Rove.

Posted by: stupid git on October 20, 2006 at 11:09 AM | PERMALINK

Spend spend spend that money,I on the oter hand can see the end of the Neo cons reign over the repub.party comming to and end.The R party may have to suffer many years in the Minority party for there foray into the Neo nest.

Posted by: Thomas2.0 on October 20, 2006 at 11:44 AM | PERMALINK

How obvious is this?

Mehlman is just putting the fear into Conservatives that their cash is short so that they both contribute more and go crazy in the get out the vote phase of the election to offset a possible dearth of cash. Hell, no amount of money is ever enough particularly in the predicament the Republicans find themselves.

Prediction: In the last days of this campaign we will be witness to the most lying vicious filth spewing from Republicans that has no chance of being properly rebutted. Republicans will literally hang if they don't retain both legislative houses; their incentive is to save their necks for which they will do anything.

Folks,

All I know is Jim Talent is burying Claire McCaskill under an avalanche of phony negative ads. The funny thing is they don't even allege she has done anything wrong. The charges are 1) her husband has parted his real estate holdings lot of limited liability companies, he has an interest in a nursing home where some staff member did some inappropriate things, there was a meth scandal in the prosecutor's office (that Claire actually handled appropriately) when Claire was country prosecutor, and Claire's brother failed to pay real estate taxes for 3 years (Claire was on the deed and paid them within a day of receiving notice.) Like I said, all crap, all the time.

Could somebody send her some money, please?

I am beginning to think the Democrats have written off Missouri. They just don't want to win the Senate.

Funny, Claire can and probably should win.

Posted by: Ron Byers on October 20, 2006 at 11:55 AM | PERMALINK

The best the Republicans could do at this point is throw the Neocons under the bus and make good with the dems.

we're already there

Posted by: cleek on October 20, 2006 at 12:08 PM | PERMALINK

It should also be pointed out that McCaskill's real-estate developer husband diversified his holdings on the advice of tax attorneys like Talent's wife. Just sayin.

Thomas1

I told you last night that you should go to KC or St. Louis and canvas door to door mocking Claire on that issue. She can use the votes.

It is hard to find anybody in this part of the country who doesn't believe gas prices haven't been artificially dropped because of this election. We have all heard all the media presented excuses, but we don't believe them. I would remind you that this is the oil and gas producer administration. Everybody knows that George Bush holds hands with Prince Bandar.

Posted by: Ron Byers on October 20, 2006 at 12:13 PM | PERMALINK

But, but, but those two guys I saw in Joplin walking hand in hand towards the Court House. Oh my, gee whiz, golly gee whilikers, what to do, what to do?

Dear Lord, why hast thou forsaken Joplin and Branson?

Posted by: Jim Talentless on October 20, 2006 at 12:17 PM | PERMALINK

Better yet go to Kansas City and St. Louis and mock McCaskill for being suspicious about why gas prices have dropped just before the election. Just make as much fun of her as you can. Tell them you are from the Talent campaign and you want to tell them about global markets and spot market speculation.

Do it enough, Claire might win by 60%

Is "Whistleblower"(Not that there's anything wrong with that) the new CODE word?

Posted by: R.L. on October 20, 2006 at 12:20 PM | PERMALINK

Thomas1

Who said I was talking exclusively about Democrats? The consensus that gas prices have been dropped for the election knows no party here in Missouri. Everybody, and I mean everybody, simply understands that Bush has only and only one card to pay--lower gas prices. He has played it. Everybody anticipates $3.00 gas by Thanksgiving. Sorry Charlie.

Once again, I dare you to argue outloud anyplace in Missouri that the suddenly lower gas prices are not artifically timed. Just be sure to tell people you are from the Talent campaign.

I didn't know oil company execs ever swore an oath--at least not before they are indicted.

And that awful MESS in Mesopotamia, was leaked by whom?

Off thread, but I do really enjoy the new comedy routines on TV - Not only The Office, or the orignial from BBC, but Dumb and Dumber, er Bush talks to his puppet O'Reilly, on FAUX the other night and that running standup comedy Tony Snowjob.

Who ever is pretending to be Thomas1 pretending not to be Charlie, or Al, or whoever, please knock it off. My head is spinning.

Thomas1, you can now go back to making a fool of yourself by repeating Rovian talking points.

Posted by: Ron Byers on October 20, 2006 at 12:56 PM | PERMALINK

Thomas1

The Opec cartel doesn't fix prices. Some oil execs told you.

There is this big arch in St. Louis. I can sell it to you cheap. I will then put you in touch with Ray Crock and he will finance a second big arch right next to it. You can then make a fortune with the biggest McDonalds in the world right down on the Mississippi water front.

Does that sound like a plan or what?

Posted by: Ron Byers on October 20, 2006 at 1:17 PM | PERMALINK

I'm not going to Missouri

Missourians from Rockport to Cape Girreaudeau just heaved a sigh of relief.

Bush sincerely believes God is behind him, as otherwise how could he possibly have been elected? Him, a failed businessman, a drunk, the black sheep of his family, how could he even have won the nomination without divine intervention.

As God's Favorite, he'll not be denied the Congressional support he needs to do God's Work.

Fanatics cannot see the obvious.

"OTOH, the notion that Democrats led by Nancy Pelosi leaked the the Mark Foley story for electoral advantage, totally legitimate." If so (and I doubt it) this would be good news, showing that the Dems had actually grown a spine and started fighting fire with fire.

As to Rove, the appearance of supreme confidence is a standard part of his schtick.

Posted by: Cal Gal on October 20, 2006 at 2:52 PM | PERMALINK

It's not the oil companies, per se. it is the Saudis, the Kuwaitis, the Qataris etc keeping the lip on the price of a barrel of oil in order to help keep BFF King George and Friends in office. (a tip - get your oil stocks now because the prices will rise in November in time for the winter heating season - this is not a joke, it happens every year).
You can contribute to Claire McCaskill and other close senate races here http://www.actblue.com/page/republicanfirewall
I did.

Thanks for the link Merg. Ron Beyers and I are working hard for Claire. We need all the help we can get. the R's have pulled out of Ohio, Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Montana to dump money into Tennessee and Missouri for negative advertising.

Claire is trying to stay on the high-road here. They will try to strafe her with a blitz of negative ads.

Posted by: Global Citizen on October 20, 2006 at 5:11 PM | PERMALINK

Not to worry Global Citizen. The Cavalry has just arrived in Missouri in the form of this ad from the patriots at VoteVet.org. Check it out, it should knock Jim Talent right off the radar.
http://www.ifilms.tv/votevetsweb/talent.html
If you haven't seen it yet, you soon will. Also go to this site to give support to running this ad in other states with close elections. I think its the best ad of the campaign season.

Posted by: Merg on October 20, 2006 at 6:00 PM | PERMALINK

Is it true? Did Talent really vote against advanced body armor? When?

I am a McCaskill supporter. I don't want her suffering blow back if he didn't vote against advanced body armor.

Posted by: Ron Byers on October 20, 2006 at 6:46 PM | PERMALINK

Yes Ron, it is true and the record shows it. Jim Talent's peeps are running around all over to get the Missouri media to take it off the air. Incidently there was a congressmen in Arizona who reacted the same way even before the ad ran in his state. It has run in Virginia and a couple of other states. I'm in California where we already have Dem senators. Go to the VoteVet.org Home site for more information and maybe even make a small contribution. They will tell you how the repugnicans tried to discredit this ad and how certain media watch groups proved the Reps wrong. I loved it. I could also show you some other great ads for peripheral groups that support Democratic candidates.

Well, It looks like Bush is starting to sweat bullets. We get this news recently the Houston Chronicle:

Friday, October 20, 2006
WASHINGTON - The Iraqi government is going to have to take over its country's security "sooner rather than later," Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld said Friday, as the violence there continued to escalate.

Bush is NOW doing a classical flip-flop, going from "we're winning the war" to "we're going to get out sooner rather then later".

The war has become the offical "hot political potato" for the Repug party. It's real posion when even Texas Senator Kay Bailey Hutchinson is now saying she would NOT have voted for Bushie's WAR and that she was clueless about the facts.

It must really look bad for Republicans, for them to be doing this shit, this close to mid-term elections.

Posted by: Cheryl on October 20, 2006 at 8:31 PM | PERMALINK

Cheryl

Think of all those Republican candidates who have staked their careers on "stay the course?" Poor dumb bastards. They deserve what they get.

Posted by: Ron Byers on October 20, 2006 at 10:20 PM | PERMALINK

So Ron, Did you look up that information and if so, would you care to share that info with others who view this site. They may may not know that with as little as $10.00 they can make an enormourmous difference when they give to an effective ad like this. What a powerful feeling it is.

Posted by: Merg on October 20, 2006 at 10:47 PM | PERMALINK

Erg, where are the recent politics threads? This one'll have to do.

I saw the Strickland / Blackwell debate tonight, and also Lieberman / Lamont (with Alan Slechinger and the two fringe party dinguses). I was impressed with Strickland; not the most charismatic or dynamic guy, but he gave off great vibes as a perfectly decent character in command of the issues. He also parried Blackwell's attempted slime quite effectively. Ken Blackwell is, OTOH, an offensive piece of GOP shit.

First time I've seen Lamont and Sleshinger. I thought Lieberman held his own and did what he needed to do. Lamont didn't impress me; his demeanor was too rigid and earnestly humorless. He kept hammering the talking points, but he sounded sort of like a highschool debater. I was extremely impressed with the Republican -- the guy's got charisma to spare and is obviously comfortable in front of a camera (this of course gives me a good feeling, because if he can break out of single digits it's Lamont's best hope). The two fringe party dudes were as dumb as overbred golden retrievers. Took until the closing statement to discover that the Concerned Citizens Party was all about pro-life.

It's understandable why Strickland's way ahead in the polls (Blackwell is an ideologue cut from the Alan Keyes cloth), and -- sad to say -- it's also understandable why Lamont is slipping -- there's a definite stature gap there, and it's tough to disagree with Lieberman on nearly all issues (his sanctimonius tone, of course, is a whole other matter), including his current mealy-mouthing on Iraq. Lamont's been *saying* the right things, but he's not frontally engaging Lieberman. Sleshinger, OTOH, scored some great zingers and made very sensible-sounding, well-articulated points. Of course when he went off on a litany of why conservatives should oppose Lieberman it finally became apparent how neanderthal conservative he is ...

But if he can peel off some Republicans (because his argument is correct; Lamont and Lieberman are extremely close on nearly all issues), so much the better. Otherwise, as long as Joe retains his seniority I don't forsee him bolting from the party.

Right now I look at Joe Lieberman and all I see is a vote for Nancy Pelosi as speaker -- and, for the moment at least, that works for me :)

Bob
