SEEING GREEN....The American Society of Magazine Editors has chosen the year's best magazine covers, and I'm seriously underwhelmed. Were these really the most compelling covers of the entire year?

Mostly, though, I was intrigued by the winner in the Celebrity category, a Harper's Bazaar cover featuring actress Julianne Moore. Here's what the New York Times said about it:
The awards panel said in a statement that the Julianne Moore cover was a breakthrough on several levels. Ms. Moore is not automatically perceived as someone whose picture alone can sell magazines. On this cover, her face is partially obscured by her red hair. She is not flashing a big smile. And her dress and the type used on the cover are green, a color often worn by redheads but one that has traditionally been considered poison on the newsstand.
Really? Green is newstand poison? Am I the only person on the planet who didn't know this?

I happened upon an open thread so I'd thought I'd comment even though I have nothing much to say on the topic at hand, except this: I saw Julianne Moore in awful movie the other day, called the Forgotten. Worth seeing for how bad it gets midway through. A sneaky sci-fi picture.

Green is a 'comfort' color, which means it doesn't catch the eye as much as other colors.
There's some basic evolutionary reasoning behind the perception of colors.

Off-topic but related story: When I was working on a publication geared towards academics, our cover was green simply because it had always been green. Everybody hated the color, especially beacuse our webpage was stuck with it too. I was curious why the color green was originally chosen in the early 1920's. After asking around and doing a bit of research, it turns out that the original editorial board saved a nickle a cover by choosing the least wanted color. To this day (Going into the 85th year of publication), that journal still uses the same color.

It would be interesting to hear from a psychologist or anthropologist on the subject. As neither, I would guess that, leaving aside the three culturally primal colors (white, black, and red), blue is regarded as metaphysical and soothing while green is felt as suspiciously somatic and vegetative.

It's certainly news to me. I like green. I vaguely remember, however, reading somewhere that men should never wear a green tie to job interviews or when speaking publicly because supposedly it makes people subconsciously think you are not telling the truth or are generally dishonest. Which sounds like crap, but I have been looking for a nice solid forest green tie literally for years and have been unable to find one. Maybe that (or more likely that it doesn't sell well in ties any more than it does on magazine covers) is why I can't seem to find one.

Don't know about Harper's Bazaar, but I've noticed Vogue covers featuring folk chanteuse Jewel and Olympic sprinter Marion Jones, neither of "whose picture alone can sell a magazine"; at least I wouldn't figure, though both are pretty enough. So consider me unimpressed with Harper's Bazaar's edginess.

green is the most pyschologically soothing color to the human mind. It is used for non-alarm conditions and for reducing stress. Most likely green's calming effects are why it is no good for media sensationalization.
Red is the most attention grabbing color, which is why its used for bringing attention to alarm or danger conditions.

Computerized voting machines 'accidentally' leave off the last name of Democratic candidate opposing George Allen,
http://www.dailykos.com/storyonly/2006/10/24/111047/27
U.S. Senate candidate James Webb's last name has been cut off on part of the electronic ballot used by voters in Alexandria, Falls Church and Charlottesville because of a computer glitch that also affects other candidates with long names, city officials said yesterday . . . Election officials attribute the mistake to an increase in the type size on the ballot. Although the larger type is easier to read, it also unintentionally shortens the longer names on the summary page of the ballot.
Thus, Democratic candidate Webb will appear with his first name and nickname only -- or "James H. 'Jim' " -- on summary pages in Alexandria, Falls Church and Charlottesville, the only jurisdictions in Virginia that use balloting machines manufactured by Hart InterCivic of Austin.
"We're not happy about it," Webb spokeswoman Kristian Denny Todd said last night, adding that the campaign learned about the problem a week ago and has since been in touch with state election officials. "I don't think it can be remedied by Election Day. Obviously, that's a concern."

Totally off topic. There's a new film coming, Death of a President, a docudrama about the assassination of GWB. I can't help but wonder if somehow the repugs aren't behind this. Note this comment:
"Eric Staal of Republicans Abroad in London said last night:...'We've seen from early in his presidency the extremes that the political Left are willing to go to vilify him. This takes this vilification to a new and disturbing level."

Hmmm, how much mileage do you think they can get from a movie like this? All I can say is that IF they ARE behind it, it's really a new low for them. But then, every day is a new low for them.

Regarding Jeff Fecke's highly "liberal" comment about one of the most shocking Congressional reports you'll ever read, why doesn't everyone keep a liberal, open mind and read it for themselves: tinyurl.com/y9msjh (PDF file from house.gov)
It's 40 pages, but here's just a very small snippet:
"...During 2005, Border Patrol apprehended approximately 1.2 million illegal aliens; of those 165,000 were from countries other than Mexico. Of the non-Mexican aliens, approximately 650 were from special interest countries... Since September 11, 2001 to the present hundreds of illegal aliens from special interest countries (such as Iran, Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Pakistan, Cuba, Brazil, Ecuador, China, Russia, Yemen, Albania, Yugoslavia and Afghanistan) were apprehended within the South Texas region alone."

Green is one of Mexico's national colors. Could Bazaar be issuing a not-so-subtle dig against Bush's Great Wall project?
Also green is on the flags of Ireland (of course, they invented the color green), Hungary, Nigeria, Libya, Australia, Lebanon. Green is one of Wales' colors as well. It's the color of the leek, an important Welsh symbol.
IMHO, Bazaar magazine was trying to show solidarity with Celtic Muslim immigrants from Mexico.

As for Julianne Moore -- I've always thought she was utterly adorable, in an understated, non-covergirl way. Her first name is beautiful. She was great in Magnolia and Boogie Nights (so was Heather Graham, for that matter) -- but her best role to this day is probably The Big Lebowski.

My reaction is: Only 650 from countries of special interest? Including Russian and Chinese? That's 0.05% of the immigrants apprehended. Making it, say, 200-300 from Middle Eastern countries.
If that's the case, then I'd say the rumors that coyotes are reluctant to take Middle-Easterners across the border (bad for business) are true, and its other routes of entry, not the southern border, that we should be primarily concerned about re. illegal terrorist entry into the U.S.

I ride a green BMW motorcycle. Guess I'm not real. Oh well. I remember hearing a similar thing on Tom and Ray's "Click and Clack" radio show years ago that real car enthusiasts never drive green cars. Apparently they had never heard of "British Racing Green," the de rigeur color for all the Triumph, MG, and Lotus racers.
As for the "red car" meme, I can't tell how many times I've heard people repeat, as if it were a fact, that insurance for red cars costs more. The "reasons" given: people who buy red cars drive faster, therefore they have more accidents and get more tickets.
IF red cars get more tickets, I'd assume that would be because they are more visible and hence more likely to be noticed when speeding. This increased visibility would also tend to negate the idea that they get in more accidents, I would think.
It's just another urban legend, I think. I've been driving for 25 years. I've owned a dozen cars, and every time I've bought insurance, I've called several agents for price quotes over the phone. They ask the year, make and model of the car. They ask if I've had any tickets or accidents in the last 3 years (sometimes 4 or 5). They ask what level of coverage I want, and sometimes they ask about accessories. Not one time has anyone ever asked me what color my car is before quoting a price.
