CARDINAL BLUES....I guess we didn't have to wait very long for a USC loss after all. Four turnovers was just a few too many. Nice comeback try, though.
The pollsters have been itching to demote USC all season long. Now that they've lost, will they even stay in the top ten?

USC just couldn't execute; it's a shame. They're better than they've been playing. Hopefully, they can still get into a good bowl game and win that.

As a Beaver fan, I noted last week that you did not list Oregon State as one of the teams USC needed to be concerned about in the final part of the season. I'm not unhappy to say that that oversight was undeserved.
The Beavers have been inconsistent this year, but their defense has had several great games recently. I think they'll do pretty well as the season draws toward the close.

Kevin, they'll still be in the Top Ten, especially if Texas loses (it's down 0-14 as I write this).
Should be:
Ohio State
Michigan
West Virginia
Florida
Maybe Tenn. here, but what if they lose.
All in all, USC will be 6 or 7. There are a great many 1-loss teams, and three undefeateds reside in the (unfairly) reviled Big East.

Who cares? USC still controls their destiny. The winner of the USC/Cal game goes to the Rose Bowl. For my money, that is way more important than the BSC Championship.
By the way, Go Bears!

Now WHY, oh WHY, were they so anxious to demote USC? Possibly because they realized how badly overrated they were?
This defeat totally vindicates their reluctance to give USC the no. 2 spot, doesn't it?
Still, good luck against Notre Dame - I hope you beat the pants off them. Well, not literally. But a good drubbing of Notre Dame would be nice.

USC should be in the mix with Florida & Tennessee for the 7-8-9 spots in the polls, assuming no other losses in the Top 10 (Texas & Tennessee are both struggling at the start of the 4th quarter as I type this).
Kevin, it's weird for people like you to be blaming everything on media bias. If there's an anti-USC bias out there, it's very weak. USC was the preseason #6 in the AP Poll, and they've been in the top 3 ever since their second win. Mostly, this is going to be decided on the field. If USC goes back to winning, they're going to climb back into the Top 5, and they'll have a good shot at the title game if no one comes out of Big East unscathed.
Posted by: Blar on October 28, 2006 at 10:20 PM | PERMALINK
Yeah, big win in Corvalis.
However, after celebrating, the fans can start growing their fingernails back - Their vaunted defense took a powder in the 4th quarter - Their offense could not sustain a late drive to seal the game and there was a costly motion call to put them out, albeit long, of field goal range.
In addition, their punter blew the last punt and then their defense was on it's collective heels for 80 yards. Instead of screaming Rah at the end, there should have been a collective Whew!
You had totally lost the big "Mo" and had the game gone into overtime, I doubt if you could have turned it back on.
However, a W is a W and you get to put it in your column. Savor it, but don't forget that loooooooooong 4th quarter.

Seeing as they must still face Oregon, California, Notre Dame, and UCLA, I would say there's a slim chance for them to stay in the top ten. The last half of their schedule is considerably tougher than the first half. A better question might be, can they win more than 8 games?

some truths about college football this year:
the big 10 is effing awful. Michigan and Ohio State are getting a free pass this year.
The pac 10 is really good, way better than they get credit for.
The SEC is freaking brutal in its across the board quality. Just wait for unranked Georgia to beat Georgia Tech in November for proof.
It's just a shame that the SEC and pac-10 won't get to match up in the national championship.

USC "certainly not as good as...Texas and Auburn". You've got to be kidding. Auburn squeaked out a late TD seven point win against 2-7 Mississippi, one of the truly awful 1-A teams this year, Texas wins by 4 against a barely mediocre Texas Tech after lucking out against a not so hot Nebraska last week that S Cal handled fairly easliy earler this year. It is too bad there is not a play off system this year. because I haven't seen one team that is so obviously good that coaches vote, press votes, and computers will have much credibility when all is said and done.

wstander
Why?
OSU is clearly the best team in the country. It was incomprehensible to me that the computers had USC at 1 at one point, over this OSU squad.
I imagine Florida, Auburn, and Tennessee could all beat USC. LSU might, depending on whether or not the game was played in California or not.
Texas, if they don't fumble, is clearly the better team. OU and USC seem evenly matched, both with fairly adequate quarterbacking and a slightly better than average offense/defense. If USC drops a game or two late, we could see this matchup in the Holiday Bowl.
Now USC would probably beat Louisville out of the Big East, and Geargia Tech out of the ACC.
I must say that the PAC-10, relative to other conferences, has the best parity. With the exception of Stanford, all the teams seem more or less evenly matched. Compare this to the Big Ten, which has 1 super team, 1 really good team, and then the field (with some fairly abysmal programs like Northwestern, Michigan State, and Illinois). Likewise, the Big 12 has some very good teams at the top, but has some awful teams as well.
Posted by: Kirok on October 28, 2006 at 11:45 PM | PERMALINK
They'll be top ten still. I'm not in the mood to gloat, for some reason, I know what it's like to watch your team lose. Sorry, hombre.
If it had been Cal it'd be fokkin' different, now, but....we shall see.
Take tomorrow off. A day off will make you a much better writer the next 5, time to shine, SoCal.

Why? Because I will be very surprised if Ohio State ends up the season undefeated. If they do, you are, of course, correct- it will be a no brainer that they should be #1.
Posted by: wstander on October 28, 2006 at 11:54 PM | PERMALINK
We are probably looking at a West Va/OSU national championship game. Big Blue got vaulted up to number 2 by beating an ND team convincingly, but that same ND team has looked bad against Mighigan State, which is a bad team, and UCLA, which is decent team. I don't think the Buckeyes will have a lot of trouble with Michigan.
I also don't really understand why a USC loss is totally surprising, given that they graduated maybe the greatest backfield in the history of college football last year. Frankly, I wouldn't be too surprised to see them drop a couple of more this year, and have a 2-3 loss season next year as well. The rest of the PAC 10 has become very solid.

You're right. I hadn't thought of it from that point of view. Consider my argument withdrawn.

Really? Who do you think will beat OSU? Texas might have, but they clearly did not have enough early in the season. They have to get past Michigan at home, but I question this #2 ranking for Michigan. Since there is no conference championship in the Big 10, that is more or less all she wrote there. The Buckeye win against Michigan will probably be convinving enough to discourage the "BCS championship game rematch" speculation.
With USC out of the 2 spot, all WVU has to do is to get past Louisville next week, and I think they are in. The WVU offense is better than any OSU has faced, so maybe they can win.

"I must say that the PAC-10, relative to other conferences, has the best parity."
No, on that front you have to go with the ACC,
hands down.
There are no great - or even really good -
teams...but when Wake Forest is in contention
for a BCS bowl as November hits and Florida State
is in last place in their division at 2-4..you know parity has been supersized.
And the whining about USC & pollsters is kind of strange. Auburn '04 says "hi!".

If WV makes the championship bowl against an undefeated Ohio State, you would be correct. That would, of course, be a travesty. There are 40 teams that would have an undefeated record if they played the same schedule as West Virgina.
Posted by: wstander on October 29, 2006 at 1:48 AM | PERMALINK
Kevin, they lost to Oregon State. But yes, they will probably stay in the top 10 for this week, because otherwise, the idiots who design the computer polls would have to explain how Cal is ahead of Tennessee in the BCS, despite the fact that we beat them like a dru...sorry, meant to keep this a no pun zone.
And for parity, try playing in the SEC, Mississippi State not withstanding. I have no fingernails left, and we still have to play LSU.

USC is a program on the decline. They had a great run, though.
They get to enjoy being overrated as a result of their recent success, but in reality, they would lose to 4 or 5 Big Ten teams.

Posted by: dr sardonicus on October 29, 2006 at 3:51 AM | PERMALINK
If USC played with the intensity the showed in the fourth quarter for an entire game, they would have won and deserve the higher ranking to which Kevin thinks they are entittled. Instead, they usually sleepwalk through the first half (or more) of their games before clocking in.
Hopefully, they will play with more enthusiasm in the Notre Dame game. And rilvary or not, the Trojans should have no problem with UCLA. The Bruins really stunk up the joint in Pullman today.
The game I'm looking forward to seeing is Oregon State and Hawaii. The underrated Warriors (6-2) have the hottest offense in the country and only two losses--each by a touchdown--to Boise State and Alabama. On December 2, Hawaii should be 10 and 2 and coming off a victory over Purdue.
Imua Warriors!
Posted by: DevilDog on October 29, 2006 at 4:07 AM | PERMALINK
fafner1,
You are talking about an era of very good coaches - The game you referred to in 71 was coached by Dee Andros - He also beat USC in 67 when he had his best team. Even though Dee ended with a losing record, he was known, not only for beating USC twice, but defeating Oregon several times in the Civil War games.
Prior to Andros was the great Tommy Prothro, who also beat USC. He even beat the Trojans when he later coached UCLA and his LA Rams might have had a shot against them had their schedules not conflicted.
However, even though Ohio State is a powerhouse, pro scouts drool over the South East Conference.
Posted by: thethirdPaul on October 29, 2006 at 9:08 AM | PERMALINK
1967 was a very fine vintage for the Beavers.
The, Dee Andros coached team not only knocked off #1USC, but tied #2 ranked UCLA team coached by Prothro, and defeated another team, Purdue which had gained the #2 slot.
They were nicknamed "The Giant Killers".
But, but, but Kansas did beat Colorado yesterday. Hey, it's something at least.

The ACC admittedly has no great teams, but does have a number of very good ones. Take North Carolina and Duke out of the equation (serves them right for opposing expansion a few years back), and it may be as solid and well-balanced a conference as any in the country -- especially considering all the talent it lost to the NFL draft last year. Nice win for the Terps over Florida State last night. (And with Miami's loss at Georgia Tech, it pretty much ensures that none of the "big three" -- FSU, Virginia Tech and Miami -- who were expected to dominate the post-expansion ACC will appear in the conference title game Dec. 2.)

Man, ain't the ACC freakin' weird this year?
It looks more and more like the SEC now.
I thumb my nose at the 'pundits' who chose SC over the Vols and Miami over GT.
Texas Tech is not the Red Raiders of yore, ya'll. They are a vastly improved program.
I concede Paul's criticism that the Beaver's D fell down on the job in allowing those TD's in the 4th Q but damn! that was an exciting game.
Now he has to concede my exactly on-the-nose: Vols by a TD.

I no longer have any emotional investment with any of the pro sports franchises here. I haven't been to a Sonics game in at least 20 years, ditto for the Seahawks. I didn't even use the company tickets for the Mariners this season, fifteen rows up behind home plate. If you go to a Mariners game, at least you're outside in the twilight in the increasingly warm Seattle summers drinking good beer and eating a BBQ'd brat.
