THANKSGIVING CAT BLOGGING....From everyone here at Drum World Headquarters, including our poultry-loving cats, Happy Thanksgiving. I'll be off for the next few days, but I'll be back in time for Saturday's USC-Notre Dame showdown, at which time we'll know how much we really have to be thankful for this year.
Have a good weekend, everyone. Enjoy your turkey!

Thanksgiving is going to be tough this year. My brother went to Cal, my dad is a die-hard ND fan, and my wife is just finishing up at USC. Considering how much we've paid for her schooling, I'm thinking we've urned a "Bush Push" Part Duex.

Happy Thanksgiving, everyone, and enjoy your weekends.
Kevin, when you get back from the festivities and perhaps don't feel like leading the tail end of a holiday weekend off with a political post ...
... and because some of us are bored silly by sports posts:
Thomas Pynchon's new 1100-page novel Against The Day just came out. It's *intensely* political; it covers the period from the 1892 Chicago Columbian Exposition to the end of the First World War, taking a sympathetic view of bombthrowin' anarchists against Gilded Age plutocracy. There's also a bunch of nifty steampunk ideas in there, too -- fanciful extrapolations of pre-Newtonian math and science that should set any skiffy fan's synapses a-firin'...
Michikio Kakutani of the NYT panned it. So did the creep from the NY Sun -- but most of the other reviews have been filled with praise.
You really ought to consider giving it a post ...

Go Trojans!!
And why root for just one USC, when you can root for two? Go Gamecocks, beat Clemson!!
[The scary thing is, I've got a rooting interest in both schools. My parents met as undergrads at Southern Cal; my wife and I met as grad students at South Carolina.]

I'm hoping ND can beat the Used Trojans this year, only so the Wolverines can have a rematch against the Buckeyes. We woulda won that game if it wasn't for Crable's stoopid hit out-of-bounds!
Anyway, if it wasn't for that I would want both ND and USC to lose.
Go Irish!

A Thanksgiving post worthy of thanks! I'd like to thank Kevin and his feline children. I'd like to thank the American people for correcting their errant ways by electing a Democratic majority. I'd even like to thank someone for allowing my 80-year old father to survive a broken neck and back in a fall down the stairs. He's back home after 4 months of intensive care and nursing home rehab. I'd also like to thank the posters here (even the trolls) for giving me something to ponder.

No longer invested in the AFC West, I don't have a horse in the Bronco/Chief game (pardon the pun). Did you see the story about Johnny D, the other eastside (OK, Bethel HS) QB from the U? Had a concussion in the Stanford game. While undergoing tests they discovered a brain tumor. Thankful for him that he'll more than likely make a complete recovery after surgery to remove it, though his football days are over. Dog is shining on the DAWGS!!

At Thanksgiving, I'm grateful for the Political Animal as a source of intelligent comment and criticism of the disastrous decisions of our current president. Happy Thanksgiving, everyone. I'm off soon to to my son's house to play with the grandkids and be polite to my ex and her mother.
We truly have much for which to be grateful.
And, as President Lincoln wrote:
The year that is drawing towards its close, has been filled with the blessings of fruitful fields and healthful skies. To these bounties, which are so constantly enjoyed that we are prone to forget the source from which they come, others have been added, which are of so extraordinary a nature, that they cannot fail to penetrate and soften even the heart which is habitually insensible to the ever watchful providence of Almighty God....
No human counsel hath devised nor hath any mortal hand worked out these great things. They are the gracious gifts of the Most High God, who, while dealing with us in anger for our sins, hath nevertheless remembered mercy. It has seemed to me fit and proper that they should be solemnly, reverently and gratefully acknowledged as with one heart and voice by the whole American People.

Kevin: "... but I'll be back in time for Saturday's USC-Notre Dame showdown ..."
And while you're watching that, I'll be tailgating at Aloha Stadium prior to the Purdue-Hawaii game, getting ready to watch UH quarteback Colt Brennan throw another 4 or 5 TD passes for the No. 25 Rainbow Warriors, who are averaging 49 points a game! If you like offensive fireworks, then try to catch the game on cable or the internet.
So far, Brennan's thrown for 48 TDs (and only 8 INTs), and 4155 yds., has a 72.3% completion rate (303 comp. / 419 attempts) -- AND consider this: He's done all that while STILL sitting out the entire 4th quarter of the last seven games.
AND there's still two regular season games to go, Saturday with Purdue and and Dec. 2 against Oregon State.
The Heisman committee just might want to take a look-see at what's happening in Honolulu this year.
Happy Thanksgiving to all.

Here in HI, you can see a haka before Kahuku High School football games, and some other schools do it, too. I'm sure "Donald from Hawaii" will back me up on this. You can find a reference to it here and video clips here and here. Maybe there's a soccer team that does it somewhere, as well?

Keith:
Thanks for the links to the Hakas. I didn't know the word, just heard from other rugby players long ago about this NZ All Black tradition, so it was a treat to be able to see it done on YouTube and then on your links. Since amateur rugby was a worldwide sport when I began playing (in Boston in the 1960s), we heard stories about the NZ pregame war chant, and at one point the stories about the Uruguayan team that crashed in the Andes was going around. Only later did the non-rugby American population begin to hear the stories that came out in the book and movie Alive. This story led to a brief period of black humor including tee shirts with lines like "rugby players eat their dead."
Andrew Sullivan labels the war chant as demonstrating testosterone, but what he failed to explain is the remarkable culture of hospitality that rugby teams show to each other -- in amateur rugby games, the home team traditionally hosts the visitors to a beer party; everybody seems to understand that it is a game, we will be playing each other again, and we leave the violence on the field. I don't know how that translates to Hawaiian football, but it sure beats the pregame "lets go."
Posted by: Bob G on November 24, 2006 at 4:19 AM | PERMALINK
Bob G:
If you've never seen "The Whalerider" it's worth watching for the scenes where the village elder is instructing village youth on how to perform the chant, all the while refusing to instruct his own granddaughter who is secretly his best student.
Like anywhere else in the world of American high school sports, Hawaii high school football can be less than amicable, but there seems to be a lot more animosity between groups of fans than between the players themselves. As the USA Today story points out, families may have sons or nephews playing on different teams, and since there aren't that many high schools on Oahu, they often line up against one another, compete fiercely, then get together after the game for kahlua pork, SPAM musubis and leis. At least, that's the way it's supposed to be.
Andrew Sullivan may be partly right about the haka, but I think that in the sporting context it's meant to demonstrate a lack of fear and a sense of team unity.
My brother and one of my sisters played college rugby in the 1980s (and never, ever did a haka). My impression is that the club teams were much like members of a gigantic fraternity than opponents. Some schools took their rivalries very seriously (e.g. the service academies), but they also slept on each other's floors, drank a lot of beer, and loved sharing injury stories.
President Bush played for Yale's rugby club, but he probably wouldn't be much help here. He must have gotten knocked around badly in too many scrums, because he now thinks that he played on a "varsity" team, and I don't know if any college (other than perhaps Berkeley and Reed) has one of those.
I'd forgotten about the rugby players in "Alive." There was a good story about them a couple of months back in Outside magazine.

As for tonight's big game, being a Michigan fan, it would actually help the Maze and Blue's cause if USC lost tonight. Why? Because Michigan already whacked Notre Dame earlier this year (47-21 I believe). I think Michigan deserves a re-match with Ohio State, and we don't need the Trojans mucking up the works by beating the Irish. Having said all that, I just cannot bring myself to root for ND. They can't lose enough for me. So, tonight, I will root against my own interests. Go USC. Crush Notre Dame.

All of the dead Iraqis would like to thank the US and its citizens for deposing Saddam Hussein. All of the Iraqi mothers who have lost children because of Bush's War would like to thank America for deposing Saddam. All of the Iraqi children who have lost their mothers would like to thank America for deposing Hussein. Deep down in their unconscious hearts, despite all of their suffering and privation, the Iraqis know Bush's War was worth it and humbly lie down at the feet of the lion (then push the button).
The Palestinian and Lebanese victims of Israeli militant aggression would like to thank the US and its citizens for gifting fighter jets, missiles, anti-personell bombs, tanks, guns and bullets to Israel so that they may learn the meaning of American generosity and fair play. The grandmothers who have lost children and seen their beloved grandchildren maimed will cast off their despair and annihilate their souls in appreciation.
