 The federal government is supposed to issue new rules about debt levels for students in for-profit colleges. In the meantime, the states are working on their own regulations.
 Washingtons budget hawks want to decimate the federal workforce to shrink the deficit. It will have the opposite effect.

While I'm gone, though, let me recommend some reading material that I just got in the mail: The Best American Political Writing 2006, edited by Royce Flippin. It's got a great selection of liberal political writing from the past year, including a couple of pieces from the Monthly. Some I've read but many I haven't, and I'll be taking this with me to while away the downtime during the conference. I'll be back on Thursday. It took me three buses and two trains from the Los Feliz area to LAX. I was flying to San Jose. Lacking that or perhaps walking or biking "up" here, I see no reason for someone to think of O.C. to L.A. as an overnight trip. I drove to San Diego, spent a few hours biking on two trips, toured the U.S.S. Midway, and took in a couple other sites and drove back in about 15 hours. I drove from L.A. to Utah and Arizona and took hikes in three National Parks and drove back in less than 48 hours. Perhaps the explanation is that George Soros (just as an example) is springing for the hotel room or something. -- Well, since we're waiting... What'll it be, Sir John, scotch or rye? "Mr. Bush's opponents accused him of breaking the law, with a few even calling for his impeachment. His backers demanded that he be given express legal authority to do what he had done. Law professors talked, civil rights groups sued and a federal judge in Detroit declared the wiretapping program unconstitutional. "But as Democrats prepare to take over on Capitol Hill, not much has really changed. For all the sound and fury in the last year, the National Security Agency's wiretapping program continues uninterrupted, with no definitive action by either Congress or the courts on what, if anything, to do about it, and little chance of a breakthrough in the lame-duck Congress." In the lame-duck congress? Are we to believe that Bush will never be subpoena by the change of parties in control of our congress? This is why, on Meet the Press this last Sunday, Michael Steele insisted to Democratic strategist Donna Brazile that Dems "didn't have a mandate", which is to say, "no right to do anything", because Republicans don't want Bush investigated but Dems have to do this, THEY HAVE TOO, otherwise the change of congress will be for not. The Dems need to find a way to get rid of Dick Cheney, and surely Dicky can't be too popular with the CIA, other govenment departments, and there must be some Republicans thinking, yeah, that's what needs to be done, and I think, without hesitation, the Dems should offer Baker an ultimatum, "you get rid of that SOB or else, we'll move for impeachment, investigate any number of things and make them VERY public." Frankly, it sounds to me anyway, if you read Froomkin, that Cheney is certifiably insane. Cheryl: In the lame-duck congress? The lame-duck Congress is the 109th Congress as it stands now: once the new Congress is sworn in in January and the change of parties takes effect, it will no longer be the lame-duck Congress. Immediately after the election, Bush basically pushed to have the lame-duck Congress pass the warrantless wire-tapping bill specifically because he knew that the Democrats wouldn't pass it and would be issuing subpoenas. As for the Dems needing to "find a way to get rid of Dick Cheney..." like it or not, he's the Vice President. Short of impeachment and conviction (or a fortuitous heart attack), there's no way to just up and get rid of him. I really don't think that some sort of investigatory blackmail is really the way we want to go in a Constitutional democracy. Democrats, in their hurry to measure for drapes and their holiday lethergy, are overlooking is the refusal of the Republican leadership of the 109th Congress to deal with a number of very important appropriations bills. They are leaving them for the incoming congress. That will increase the workload on the Democrats and interfer with their 100 hour program. Democrats should be howling about the sore loser Republicans going AWOL. Hostile - watch the BBC Channel 4 documentary on "The Death Squads" - - - essentially, we HAVE allied with Sadr, and what is going on in Iraq is a controlled genocide of Sunnis. If we allowed Sadr to do this at his own pace, it would probably be attracting more attention and world-outrage. The fact that it's a relatively slow (1500-2500 per month) genocide keeps it under the radar. The fact that we have not done anything to stop it, makes us complicit.
