SILENT DICK....From a Newsweek report on Dick Cheney's current travels around the world:
Just after dawn on Tuesday morning, reporters were taken to the mess hall, where Cheney was dining with the troops. "How was breakfast?" a reporter yelled to the VP. "Breakfast was excellent," Cheney replied, in what were his first three words to the press pool traveling with him on the trip, now in its eighth day.
Does he think he gets charged by the word or something? Jeebus.

Look, you can understand his hostility.
Cheney is going to go down as the Worst President in History. He's a tad touchy about it.

Awww...the poor widdle reporters. Are they feeling left out? Maybe part of their problem is if the VP said "Hello," the headlines would read "Cheney's statement contains obscenity."
Democrats consider impressing journalism school graduates their highest priority. Cheney's got other things to do.

It must be so hard to leave the pampered elite secure elegance of the White House to go among the unwashed masses and be reminded of how the other 99% lives. It isn't his forte to consort with the hired help.
If one lives too long in rarified air, ones people skills tend to rot. So does ones compassion, ones empathy, and all benevolence that can't be placated by writing a large check out of ones excess funds. What exactly has Cheney done for America that hasn't personally benefited him or his kind?

Incidentally, I for one am glad that Dick Cheney survived the suicide bombing.
Although I for one also hope that "Saddam tried to kill my daddy" will be supplanted by "the Taliban we didn't get because I was too busy getting Saddam tried to kill Dick" as Bush's inspiration for the next two years.

MONKEYBONEHEAD: Maybe part of their problem is if the VP said "Hello," the headlines would read "Cheney's statement contains obscenity."
Yeah, that's a real problem, isn't it? It's like that time he snarled a sweet and friendly, "Go fuck yourself!" to Senator Daschle and two or three
widdle reporters had the temerity to blow it all out of proportion by writing that Cheney had "used an expletive on the Senate floor." Damn liberal media!

The article doesn't say that Cheney didn't say much. It says he didn't say much to the press.
The media have become too arrogant when they make themselves a key part of the stort. Cheney's visit is intended to accomplish certain foreign policy goals. It may or may not have succeeded. But, it's not Cheney's job to provide material for media articles. In fact, it's appropriate that Cheney report on this success (or lack thereof) after discussion with Bush and other foreign policy wonks in the administration.

The problem with lying is the hard work necessary to remember which lies were told to who. This is an excellent reason to comment only on breakfast.
I am also glad Cheney didn't buy the farm this morning. Think about how the rest of our rights as Americans would go down the tube if Cheney has been assassinated. Bush would have a great excuse to declare Martial Law.

I think frankly0 has it right.
The charade that Bush is the real president is pretty much shot. It's obvious now to most everybody who's calling the shots, who's the real power, who foreign leaders listen to, etc., and it ain't little Georgie.
The media, late to the game as usual, are finally pointing their lenses where they belong, and I think Dick is starting to feel a little warm under the floodlights.
I certainly hope it doesn't affect his heart condition.

Senator Leahy is so civilized that he was removed from one committee because he leaked secret information. But at least he didn't out a non- undercover CIA agent.
Seems to me if Ole Pat spent more time trying to fulfill Cheney's advice it might keep things a bit more quiet in the Senate. I think that would be good advice to give the Grand Wizard Byrd - he should spend some time following the VP's advice.
Aren't we all relieved that the Vice President wasn't killed this morning? Goodness, the closer Pelosi gets to the power the more frightened we all should be.

Cheney not talking to the press is his way of sticking it to the press. Its a Bush administration theme. He's showing the wingnuts that hes above speaking to the filter, the left wing liberally biased press that he and his movement have spent years training the wingnuts to not listen to. The troops see him dissing the press, the wingnuts see it. Its what they want to see. Who's you authority now bitches!

Leahy was attacking Cheney
Attacking? Can you provide a quote? I'll certainly agree that Leahy was questioning Halliburton, etc. Is Cheney justified in reacting to a civil inquiry as though it were an attack? Well, I guess if Cheney was King then maybe so...
But it was certainly understandable.
No. It wasn't. And I defy you to provide a quotation to support your case. Get to work, Hacksaw.

Take a look at the debate on the Leahy amendment (regarding war profiteering) back in 2004 which was the source of the animosity. Leahy's comments are a direct attack on Cheney, baldly accusing him of arranging an award of a contract - "To this former prosecutor from Vermont, it looks like a coordinated scheme to enrich Halliburton at taxpayer expense with no-bid contracts." He goes on to raise all manner of accusations against Halliburton and Cheney.
My point isn't to debate the merits of the argument (though I think Leahy is way off base here) but rather to show that a week before the infamous comment from Cheney, Leahy was laying into him pretty hard. Little wonder then, that Cheney wasn't feeling too charitable when Leahy wanted to play nice-nice on the Senate floor.
The debate transcripts I found for the amendment are here:

Hacksaw, the url you provided came up empty for me.
Suffice it to say, you regard the accusation of war-profiteering against Halliburton as some sort of libel. I don't. I think it is manifestly the truth.
Dick Cheney is oftentimes not a big fan of the truth. Like, for example, where his role in outing V. Plame is concerned.

Sorry about the URL, I guess Thomas doesn't let you link to a search. Anyway, the link was intended to go to the records of debate for Senate Amendment 3293 which you might be able to get to from here, by clicking on the roll call vote link:
http://www.progressivepunch.org/vote.jsp?member=NYI&issue=W4&year=2004&num=120
As for your other comments, the point isn't whether or not you (or I) buy into Leahy's accusation but rather whether Leahy by making those accusations had any reason to expect a warm and friendly reception by the person he was accusing. Moreover, the accusation wasn't about war profiteering by Halliburton (which is quite far from being manifestly truth) but rather an accusation that Cheney manipulated the system to award KBR a contract and then enable their profiteering. That is why he took it personally.

Hacksaw,
Upon closer examination it appears that it wasn't actually Leahy's allegations re Halliburton/KBR which precipitated Cheney's outburst, but rather what Leahy said in response to Cheney's complaint about the allegations.
During their exchange, Leahy noted that Republicans had accused Democrats of being anti-Catholic because they are opposed to some of President Bush's anti-abortion judges, the aides said. That's when Cheney unloaded with the "F-bomb," aides said.
What it appears to show is that Cheney doesn't have much stomach for give-and-take.

Cheney is into working, not hobnobbing with reporters.
Cheney is into secrecy, not open, accountable government. He is into oil, and using military force to gain control other nations reserves. He is into profiting from the sale of machines which kill people. He is into telling people he disagrees with to fuck off, in so many words, or non-words.
He is also opposed to spending the nations wealth on the underpriviledged. But that's another story.
