THE PURGE, CONT'D....Yesterday we learned that two Republican politicians called U.S. Attorney David Iglesias prior to last year's midterms to ask when he might hand down indictments in a corruption case involving some local Democrats. Today, Marisa Taylor of McClatchy tells us who the Republicans are:

Sen. Pete Domenici and Rep. Heather Wilson of New Mexico pressured the U.S. attorney in their state to speed up indictments in a federal corruption investigation that involved at least one former Democratic state senator, according to two people familiar with the contacts.

....According to the two individuals, Domenici and Wilson called to press Iglesias for details of the case.

Wilson was curt after Iglesias was "non-responsive" to her questions about whether an indictment would be unsealed, said the two individuals, who asked not to be identified because they feared possible political repercussions. Rumors had spread throughout the New Mexico legal community that an indictment of at least one Democrat was sealed.

Domenici, who wasn't up for re-election, called about a week and a half later and was more persistent than Wilson, the people said. When Iglesias said an indictment wouldn't be handed down until at least December, the line went dead.

Iglesias was fired two months later. I guess he should have taken the hint.

What crimes were committed?

Would Gov. Richardson get to appoint the new Senator?

Would he feel compelled to replace the Thug with a new Thug or cleanse with a fresh Dem?

How long will it take before we can kiss Joe Lieberman goodbye?

Bob, it appears there is very little these guys won't do. Just GD amazing...

The answer, Bob, is no there isn`t.

Kevin implies that Dominici and Wilson fired Iglesias. But they are in Congress and the U.S. Attorney was replaced by the Bush Administration, not by Congress.

Sorry, Kevin, your evidence is flimsy.

"I would never, ever make a change in the United States attorney position for political reasons," Attorney General Alberto Gonzales

The mire hasn't even started. The Dems need to make it as unpartisan, bi-party and for-the-benefit-of-the-country as possible.

This administration has been an international disgrace. Mall-administration needs to stop now.

On Attorney Iglesias, he was on NPR this evening. He was a Bush appointee. Would have resigned if asked. Will name who called him about the "closed files", if asked. Has been targeted as taking "too many days from the office" without mentioning he is a USN Reservist doing hi required 36+ day service/training. Seemed like what you expect a US Attorney to be.

Screw these guys. There is nothing ordinary about replacing so many US Attornies in the last 2 years like this. Has been hinted it is to raise the number of future potential Republican Higher Court appointees. One of the replacement Attornies is a Rove gnome.

As to Alberto Gonsalez, There's nothing this man says I trust. He's a sleazeball politico where law is a means, not a belief. Not one shred of morality.

His crimes list just gets longer.

Your level of English comprehension is about 3rd grade. No where Kevin says that.

As usual, you expose yourself as an ignorant troll. But these members of Congress allowed themselves to use pressure they have no right to use to intimidate their states' U.S. Attorney. That IS dubious behavior.

Posted by: notthere on March 2, 2007 at 2:12 AM | PERMALINK

The evidence is mounting that there has never been an administration like this one in U.S. history. The corruption and incompetence go down so deep it's like trying to plumb a bottomless well! The top 3 examples (or the worst 3) that stand out in my mind are:

1. The staffing of the Iraq Reconstruction project (or whatever they call those clowns in the 'Green Zone')

2. Katrina

3. Comments by ex-Cabinet officials that there was no policy-making structure existing outside of the political operation

And, to answer a previous question;no, there isn't anything these guys want do. Their only moral guideposts seem to be a sense of entitlement and the desire for self-enrichment.

No wonder the Republican minority squashed the ethics reform bill in the Senate; might make this already patently unethical episode of predatory influednce exertion and retaliation more prosecutable.

There's absolutely nothing surprising about the party of "traditional values" being traditionally ruthless, corrupt and amoral. They always were and always will be.

Posted by: bad Jim on March 2, 2007 at 4:17 AM | PERMALINK

What amuses me is the way some political pundits assert that Bill and Hillary Clinton (Clinton, Inc.) punish their critics ruthlessly and keep a purported "enemies list". What horseshit! Only morons like American Hawk, Frequency Kenneth and Jay believe nonsense like that. The Clintons are pikers compared to Bush/Cheney Inc.

Posted by: The Conservative Deflator on March 2, 2007 at 6:35 AM | PERMALINK

Why was Iglesias taking so long in his investigation? Partisanship? Maybe. But never attribute to malevolence what can be explained by stupidity.

Iglesias wasn't fired for partisan reasons. He was fired for incompetence.

Posted by: Al on March 2, 2007 at 7:42 AM | PERMALINK

I have to wonder if Dick Cheney and his good pal Karl Rove didn't whisper in the GOP congress members ears, "go after Dems" then punish the attorneys for NOT listening to this Al Capone style of leadership coming straight out of the Whitehouse?

Reeks of organized, syndicated criminal behavior of the old Al Capone days except this time corruption is coming straight out of the Office of the President of United States, whereby they own the press, own the government offices, select only judges that do that they say and then accuse those in the judicial field of being “activist judges” – only when those in the legal field don’t do the bidding of Dick Cheney and practice complete corruption in favor of this administration.

How bad does it have to get before Americans realize how corrupt this administration is?

The Bush administration is completely corrupted. This administration is doing things that anyone else would go to jail for - this administration does completely criminal things with the sheer intent of doing criminal acts. Impeachment is the only answer to this kind of corruption.

Posted by: Cheryl on March 2, 2007 at 7:53 AM | PERMALINK

Al, since when had this administration ever fired someone because of incompetence. ROFL

Posted by: Martin on March 2, 2007 at 8:36 AM | PERMALINK

This is unfair. We should focus on the attorneys who kept their jobs. Iglesias was a bad apple and his unwillingness to play the game should not reflect on the justice department as a whole.

Posted by: rewolfrats on March 2, 2007 at 8:58 AM | PERMALINK

"Why was Iglesias taking so long in his investigation? Partisanship? Maybe."

It's strange how so many Bush appointees turned out to be partisan Democrats. Naturally, no true Republicann would ever have a disagreement with the adminstration . . .

"There's absolutely nothing surprising about the party of "traditional values" being traditionally ruthless, corrupt and amoral. They always were and always will be." - jim

Aw yes jim, one is reminded of Ronnie Earle at a time like this, who failed to bring down a Republican Governor and then set his sights on a Republican Congressman and, after SEVEN grand juries, received the indictment. But, how's that "rock-solid" case coming along?

And from your insane post, I am assuming you think that the Democrats have the "traditional values", right?. LMAO.

Kevin,
The reason I can't vote Republican is because I would be ashamed to have to contort the english language beyond recognition to make such weak ass arguments. One thing you have to hand it to your trolls for is they are the most difficult folks to embarass I have ever seen, and they stand right up and deliver this horseshit with (presumably) a straight face.

Wow.

Cheryl: Reeks of organized, syndicated criminal behavior of the old Al Capone days except this time corruption is coming straight out of the Office of the President of United States...

Makes you wonder. Are there any people out there knowledgeable enough about RICO law? Is the administration capable of being indicted as a racketeering operation?

Posted by: bigcat on March 2, 2007 at 9:53 AM | PERMALINK

Who was the Democrat that was supposed to be indicted? Has he been indicted yet? What was the crime? I'm not trolling here, I'm just curious. This has been all over TPM for a couple days, and Kevin is keeping up as well. But I've yet to see anything that even hazards a guess at who the democrat under investigation was.

Jay: But, how's that "rock-solid" case coming along?

It's going splendidly.

DeLay has lost more court battles than he's won.

And when have conservatives ever opposed a prosecutor who comes out on top, even when he loses a substantial number of hearings against everyday criminals?

Only when a white conservative is involved.

Conservatives are all gung-ho about aggressive prosecutions when the prosecutors are picking on poor blacks and latinos.

Only when they pick on derelict and crooked white conservatives do conservatives become proponents on constitutional rights, and then they make up rights that don't even exist or embrace to the extreme rights that they belittle the rest of the time and want to limit.

BTW, Jay, how's that impeachment and prosecution of Clinton going?

Failed, eh?

Too bad.

So sad.

In fact, it went so bad conservatives continue to lie and say Clinton was punished for perjury by a federal judge, even though he wasn't.

Bush at 29% approval.

Jimmy Carter territory.

Richard Nixon territory.

Deal with it.

Yeah, Al. It is the obligation of all cadres to serve the People by advancing the Party, and by promoting its unique role as the vanguard of the Revolution.

State socialism is deader than Kelsey's nuts.
The Warsaw Pact is a memory.
The Soviet Union is in the dustbin of history with 8-track tapes and the two-handed set shot.

But somewhere Lenin's ghost is laughing its ass off.

Because here, in the good ol' USA, the Bolsheviks have won.

Brooks

If the Democrat did the crime he ought to go to jail, but Iglasias was absolutely right in not bringing an indictment before he had all the evidence, and that is what Wilson and Domenici were demanding. They wanted a premature indictment to help Wilson's politicial campaign.

The more I think about it, it is clear that David Iglasias was fired for job performance issues. He was operating under the mistaken notion that he worked for the United States of America. His supervisor Alberto knew better. He was supposed to be working for the Republican party.

The results of the Baker Hamilton Iraq commission were withheld pending the Nov. elections, Why?
The results of the investgation about the WTC were withheld before 2004 elections, any criticism was kept secret because of some election.

Unless there is proof that the AG had all the evidence before the election you are just guessing.

It's just like the Soviet Union, where everything EVERYTHING was subject to the decisions from the Political Commissar.

Stupid screw-ups.

All they needed to do was another "heckuva job" this time for Davy, and good ReThug that he was, he would have gone gently into the night.

However, they had to say that there were "performance problems" and that irked the guy into squealing.
