YES, PARKING TICKETS....Seriously, we're now writing articles about Barack Obama not paying parking tickets when he was a student at Harvard? What's next? "Needs to work on his penmanship" from his fourth grade teacher?
But just to show what a charmed life he leads, this ends up turning into yet another example of what a great guy Obama is. You see, as soon as the Boston Globe brought this to his attention, he paid off his fines. The director of the city's traffic department was thrilled:
"I think it's fabulous he finally paid them," [Susan] Clippinger said by phone yesterday. "I think others who owe us money should pay us, too."
Atta boy, Barack! Way to set an example. Let's hope the rest of Harvard's deadbeats are listening.

I don't think he leads a charmed life. I think he's even better than Clinton at handling crap. More power to him.

What about the trillions in debt BushCo ran up? Will George pay?

So, once he got caught not paying his bills... he paid them.
What a prince.

It's a good thing there wasn't anything more newsworthy going on this week. Otherwise, this wouldn't have made the front page of the Globe.
Bra-vo.

I gathered from the story that he paid off the tickets before anyone brought them to his attention.

So american hocker what are you saying. That Obama is some kind of reprobate because he had some unpaid parking tickets? I'm wondering if your judgement in that regard extends to people who have had say DUIs. Or maybe even a couple divorces.

How many outstanding tickets from Yale does W have?
Posted by: Martin on March 8, 2007 at 6:47 PM | PERMALINK
Wow. I'm sold. Anyone who sticks it to the Boston and Cambridge parking authorities for so long gets my vote.
The publication of this story pretty much just won Obama the Massachusetts primary!

I'll stack up Obama's parking tickets against Bush's multiple drunk driving arrests any day.

The Department of Defense, already infamous for spending $640 for a toilet seat, once again finds itself under intense scrutiny, only this time because it couldn't account for more than a trillion dollars in financial transactions, not to mention dozens of tanks, missiles and planes.

Fucking parking tickets??
This is so stupid you almost wonder if the Obama campaign isn't behind the "revelation", just to make his critics look like idiots.
Posted by: frankly0 on March 8, 2007 at 7:08 PM | PERMALINK
Maybe George W. (for aWol) Bush will follow Obama's lead and decide to serve his remaining time in the National Guard. Heck, he might even serve in a unit that goes over to help with that Surge for the war that he started!

heh, heh, let's also investigate the unpaid parking tickets which may have been issued around Yale, or wasn't there some talk of a cocaine problem with the shrub in charge! Let's have a bit of transparency on this.
Seriously, let's discuss meaningful issues such as the incompetence of the idiots we have in charge of our government!

Personally, if I were going to run for office today, I would contact every place I ever lived and check for parking tickets and library fines. In the "gotcha" political climate of today, only a fool would overlook that step.

Anyone who has spent a minute in Cambridge knows how insane they are about parking tickets. Everyone at the Boston Globe certainly knows how absolutely unremarkable that is. Another aspect of the ridiculousness of the story. Cambridge also won't give students living on campus resident parking permits.

ohiomeister, you might also mention that Cambridge is one of those wonderful cities that chooses to derive a signficant amount of revenue from parking tickets, loving to play gotcha with car owners any way it can.
I can't be happy in any world in which they aren't suffering.
Posted by: frankly0 on March 8, 2007 at 7:32 PM | PERMALINK
Presumably he had the good sense to pay the fines with his personal funds, not campaign money.

Atta boy, Barack!
BTW, I'd rethink that expression, Kevin.

Wait a second - how come these tickets didn't come up when he applied for his law license? When I got mine, I had to tell the bar about every damm parking ticket I ever got - no kidding. So didn't Obama tell the bar about his tickets? Because if he did, he surely wouldn't have left them unpaid.
There may be more to this scandal than meets the eye.

George W. Bush received a DUI citation in Kennebunkport, ME in 1976. Dick Cheney received two DUIs in the 1960s. Laura Bush caused a traffic accident that resulted in the dealth of an ex-boyfriend.
Given that the mainstream media has -- not without some justification -- repeatedly blown off those stories as irrelevant, I'm really not in the fuckin' mood to read or listen to comments about some since-paid overdue parking tickets.
Aloha.

He probably didn't have to pay them at all. There are statute of limitations in effect here in Pa. which is what I always counted on. I only paid enough to get my car out of the pound and got most of the rest dismissed as more than 2 years old. Thank goodness I'm not running for office.

I hear he leaves the toilet seat up. Scandal!

Oh, boy! Among the very few things that can still get me upset years after the fact are the parking authorities in Cambridge. After being ticketed for parking across from the Science Center (a free parking zone at the time), I complained to the parking office and was told that they would assign me a day when I could appear in court to contest the ticket. Three months later they sent me a notice -- for a date that was already in the past, and the very next day I received a second notice that my fine had been increased for failure to pay the ticket. Bastards!

Next up: leading democrats' unpaid library fines.
Bush, never having checked out a book, appears to escape this scandal unscathed.

Shhhhhhhh.
Let's not acknowledge, let alone discuss, the hefty campaign contribution to Barack Obama from Jared Abbruzzzese, a New York businessman now at the center of an FBI inquiry into public CORRUPTION in Albany, who also had contributed to Swift Boat Veterans for Truth, a group that sought to undermine John Kerry's presidential campaign in 2004.
Shhhhhhhhh.
Don't say a word about Abbruzzese's donation being a departure from his almost exclusive support of Republicans. Keep quiet, for instance, about the fact that eight months earlier, Abbruzzese had contributed $5,000 to the Swift Boat group, and that he has given $100,000 to the Republican National Committee since 2004.
Shhhhhhhhh.

Barak Obama is gonna win it, all the rest is courtesy. I can't wait until we have the man in office, and I'll also enjoy the word-twisting that right-wingers will have to play around the n-word, ah it'll be great.

The truly amazing part of this story to me is that Obama managed in three years to collect only 17 parking tickets -- in Cambridge! He must have paid to garage his car somewhere.

Speaking of youthful indiscretions, did Obama make any of his Harvard girlfriends US ambassador to Hungary?
Bush did. Her name is April Foley.
