IN WHICH I AM CRUSHED BY SUPERIOR TECHNOLOGY....I give up. I can't compete with this. Not only am I a dinosaur, now I even sound like one.

At least you don't have a terrible beard and ugly hoodies so in my books you are ahead of Yglesias.

Ouch. Another reason not to vlog -- you get the entire blogosphere harping on your appearance as well as your opinions/writing ability/mental health.

Posted by: Whatevs on April 3, 2007 at 8:09 PM | PERMALINK

Not much lost.

You can always get some OC surfer blondes to vlog for you. Then even your opinion won't matter.

Pig... meet lipstick.

I would have rather read a transcript...

Pig... meet lipstick

I am not a pig!
I am not a crook!
I will not lose my job!
I took the 5th to protect Jesus and Bush!

Okay... okay... I do wear lipstick.
So what?

If at first you don't succeed, ... .

I don't even have sound on this computer because I don't like things that make noise.

Posted by: cld on April 3, 2007 at 8:56 PM | PERMALINK

The whole reason I don't mess with video is that if I just write things down, I always sound like a dinosaur.

Posted by: dj moonbat on April 3, 2007 at 8:56 PM | PERMALINK

I assume the technology to which you refer is that which is operating those imposing eyebrows?

Posted by: supersaurus on April 3, 2007 at 9:00 PM | PERMALINK

It's better to be thought a fool, than to open one's mouth and prove it.

Posted by: anonymous on April 3, 2007 at 9:05 PM | PERMALINK

Will SOMEONE please e-mail me and explain what vlogging is! If Kevin is a dinosaur on this subject, then I am pre that!

Your voice sounded like it was computer generated, (using inappropriate settings) and was not at all like the merely lousy signal from the other fellow. Why they are so different is a posible clue to what's wrong.

Yglesias should stick with the written word least folks find out how hollow that guy really is.

Posted by: Cheryl on April 3, 2007 at 9:20 PM | PERMALINK

I accused Yglesias of wanting to be a sunday morning talking head, at least 3 years ago. He wants to be like George Will.

Heh.

I'm sold on v-logs now.

Posted by: Frank J. on April 3, 2007 at 9:21 PM | PERMALINK

C'mon Kevin, I saw your lips move.

Posted by: craigie on April 3, 2007 at 9:33 PM | PERMALINK

What if you worked in the cats? You could do voice overs and have the cats stand-in so you wouldn't have to be on camera. Just get some footage of their mouths moving and you are set.

It's true I haven't thought this through but it seems like it might work.

BTW everyone should read Fred Kaplan's Slate article about Bush's stupid moment to go WHAAAA today.

"Congress' failure to fund our troops on the front lines," he continued, "will mean that some of our military families could wait longer for their loved ones to return from the front lines, and others could see their loved ones headed back to the war sooner than they need to. That is unacceptable to me, and I believe it is unacceptable to the American people."

How many jaws dropped when the president uttered these words? It is the administration's poor planning, not any action taken or not taken by Congress, that has already accelerated troop rotations and caused precisely this heartbreaking situation, which Bush (correctly) calls "unacceptable." And it is unacceptable, by the way, not only to military families but to the military itself, especially to the Army, which is nearly breaking under the strain.

The editorial cartoons should all show Bush having a real live toddler’s tantrum - I mean, does Bush really believe he can hold his breath forever, cause I'd sure like to see hime try.

If Matt gets enough chicks, and the gig with TNR, think he'll stop?

Posted by: luci on April 3, 2007 at 10:12 PM | PERMALINK

have you seen the new Onion about Bush getting himself out of a jam?

they hit the nail on the head (metaphorically).

What holding cell is MY vlogging from?

Posted by: Disputo on April 3, 2007 at 10:34 PM | PERMALINK

Re: vBlogging. Some points:

Am I alone, or am I the only one who just does not have the reliable bandwidth or patience to get adequate video streaming? The subject has to be extra special or a must see for me to go through the hassle of watching a video blog.

TV news only gives you the highlights and gloss but never the detail. That is why newspapers and magazines persist. vBlogging by its very nature has to have a lot of vacuum built into the message.

You can't scan a vBlog as you can a page of text. And so on.

The kind of vBlogging that might sustain itself is the type that the Daily Show does, i.e. commentary on the news video that is out there - pithy, hopefully instructive, cuttingly clever and amusing. And mercifully not by a hairy faced man in a badly lit bunker somewhere.

Regards

Lord god! I don't even like reading Yglesias (his cousin Julio is much better looking) so I certainly don't want to watch him. That still image does nothing but make him look like the wingnuts we all accuse of living in their mothers basements. The only thing missing are the Charlie's Angels and LOTR posters. He does get some credit from wiping the Cheetos dust off his "beard."

"Vlogging" does not have a future. Sorry to admit it, but there is a reason television news readers look the way they do.

Writers always sound different than one imagines when you hear their voice for the first time.

Bravo on your defense of the written word.

Posted by: HL Mungo on April 4, 2007 at 12:26 AM | PERMALINK

That was pretty funny. Hopefully on purpose.

ANYBODY who wears shades indoors with electric lighting needs a dope slap. Big time.

On the same theme but different line: Do Republican Sens/Reps dye their hair to a far higher percentage than Democratic Sens/Reps or am I the only one seeing this (Or mis-seeing this).

Posted by: notthere on April 4, 2007 at 12:36 AM | PERMALINK

Er, these vlogs are infinitely more annoying than the most questionable post you've authored.

Posted by: Name on April 4, 2007 at 1:02 AM | PERMALINK

Kevin,

Thank you for not taking off your clothes during your recent adventures in Vlogging.

Posted by: FS on April 4, 2007 at 1:11 AM | PERMALINK

Expat

Vlogging and podcasting are a curse.

One can read a blog post, get a sense of what is being said, in a second or two.

To watch a Vlog takes *minutes*. And then one never remembers the information imparted-- most visual communication is remembered by gestures, etc.

It's not about transmission quality, it is about the fact that humans can read, and comprehend, far faster than they can talk.

Surely you jest.

Go back to decent politics, OK?

Posted by: Rick B on April 4, 2007 at 9:06 AM | PERMALINK

Check out the Politics TV clips Firedoglake did from the Libby trial. Wouldn't those be considered vlogging?

Posted by: Pat_AlexVA on April 4, 2007 at 9:47 AM | PERMALINK

"Vlogging" does not have a future. Sorry to admit it, but there is a reason television news readers look the way they do.

While I certainly agree with the second part, I don't necessarily agree with the first. I mean, vloggers will, I suspect, eventually discover grooming and makeup and how to use lighting and focus effectively.

And vloggers that are mostly bloggers that occasionally post video clips will learn where video clips are effective and where they aren't, and keep video and text to what each does best.
