BYE, TONY....Tony Blair is apparently ready to end the guessing game and announce his retirement:
Mr Blair, who was campaigning for the Scottish parliamentary elections in Edinburgh, told party supporters: "Within the next few weeks, I won't be prime minister of this country.
"In all probability, a Scot will become prime minister of the United Kingdom."
If Blair sticks to this, it means Gordon Brown will be the new PM by the end of May. Brown has never been much of a fan of the Iraq War, so presumably this change means that the British withdrawal from Iraq will proceed, if anything, on an even quicker pace than before.

Unrelated, but somewhat apropos, BP CEO John Browne abruptly resigned today, after losing a fight to supress publication of details of his private life. Turns out he'd had a relationship with a dude.
Browne forfeits a 7-million dollar bonus by resigning ahead of his planned July departure. He'd already been docked over a million dollars in annual bonuses for BP's mishaps over the past year.

Time for the very slimy Mr. Blair to slink off into the sunset, to make filthy piles of blood money from war-profiteering as a partner in the Carlyle Group.

What's the over/under on the number of months until the blair clan move to the US.

Good riddance, Blair. Sucks to be Gordon Brown, who is taking over only after PoodleBoy completely tanked Labour's electoral prospects. I wouldn't be surprised if Britain had a Tory government after the next election.

I dunno, 5, 6, even 7 weeks is still a "few". I'd say "end of June".

Blair was done the minute he agreed to go along with Bush. It just took a few years to realize it.
Now on to the self-serving books and interviews!

Ah, Kevin.
Blair isn't referring to Brown. He's referring to Sean Connery.

I guess Blair told Chirac he would remain in office longer - and now he's keeping his word.

Hoot, mon! A thrifty Scotsman as Prime Minister. The Proclaimers will perform at the Opening of Parliament. And the NHS will be run by a haggis.

The great advantage of having a Scotsman as head of the government is that no one will be able to make out what he's saying. This tends to lead to a significant increase in global popularity.

Unfortunately, we'll have to listen to Blair accolades for the next week or so. Uggh. I think I'll have to tune out.
Posted by: KathyF on May 1, 2007 at 1:53 PM | PERMALINK
Yeah, but tune back in in 6 weeks to hear the Prime Minister of Britain say "fitba". He does say "fitba", doesn't he? Otherwise I retract my support.

So what's the over/under on the the number of months until Blair pens his own "tell-all" book claiming he knew their were no WMDs and that he was merely a hopelessly helpless pawn in the face of King George and His Henchmen. Not too long I bet.
I used to enjoy Mr. Blair until he lost his backbone. He had once been the perfect bridge between old and new Europe as well as old and new NATO. But then he became just like all the other shmucks who cowardly genuflected at George's knee. Pity.

Anybody know about the actual process by which Brown becomes PM? It's not as if the Chancellor of the Exchequer is like our Vice President, who succeeds to office by virtue of his position.

Fuck Blair. Thanks, that's all.

Now that's funny!

"Anybody know about the actual process by which Brown becomes PM? It's not as if the Chancellor of the Exchequer is like our Vice President, who succeeds to office by virtue of his position."
basically Blair resigns as leader of the labour party. A leadership election is then held by labour.
In the meantime blair hangs around as PM albeit even more of a lame duck than's he been the last couple of years.
Once the election winner is announced , blair goes to the palace and resigns as PM, and brown is invited to the palace to 'kiss hands' and then heads to downing street.

Goo riddance to bad rubbish. If a woman had Bill Clinton as her first husband and George W. Bush as her second, we would all agree she was insane. And that's what we're talking about here.

CJColucci -- the Labour party votes on its leadership. Party leader = Prime Minister. Earlier there was talk about the leadership being contested -- by who I forget -- which, typically, they are.
Posted by: notthere on May 2, 2007 at 1:23 AM | PERMALINK
Any candidate for the leadership needs the backing of 44 Labour Members of Parliament. There are two candidates other than the People's Gordon who have thrown their hats into the ring - John McDonnell and Michael Meacher - both on the left of the party. There are also rumours of former Home Secretary, Charles Clarke putting himself forward. However, there is every prospect that no candidate other than GB will get sufficient nominations and it will be uncontested.
