FRIDAY CATBLOGGING.... Busy day today. Sorry. But there was, you know, actual news to post about this morning.

Anyway, Domino is fine. In fact, more than fine. After months of slowly getting her acclimated to the upstairs (though why she needed acclimating remains a mystery), last week she finally figured out that (a) the bed would not bite her and (b) there were people there all night! Now, she not only comes up to bed every night, she actually scoots up early in the evening, almost as if she can hardly wait for us to show up. We'll see how long this lasts.

Today's picture, of course, is Inkblot trying to fit himself into a tiny box of cat food cans that I bought yesterday. As you can see, he eventually gave up.

First?

Sorry for the childishness. :o)

Just wanted to say, Kevin, thank you for the kitty fix! Even though I have been reading your blog daily for a long time, and know to expect cat pics on Fridays, I still am tickled by each and every one that you post. It makes the news day lighter.

Was Domino not feeling well? Or is this just a general update?

What is it with cats and boxes smaller than themselves?

Posted by: Ryan on May 25, 2007 at 3:45 PM | PERMALINK

Uh oh, Domino's gonna be jealous that Inkblot got the spotlight to himself this week. Wouldn't want to be Kevin when Domino finds out!

Cat blogging makes my weekend -- that and some great vintage jazz shows on WAMU in Washington and WFUV in New York.

Nolo: No, she's been fine. I just didn't want people to think that the reason there was no picture of her today was because she had been run over by a car or something.

Posted by: Kevin Drum on May 25, 2007 at 3:48 PM | PERMALINK

. . . whew.

Posted by: nolo on May 25, 2007 at 4:03 PM | PERMALINK

As Inkblot might say, "I'm still the Star; only the boxes have grown smaller."

I LOVE Friday Catblogging--it always makes me smile and sets a festive mood for the upcoming weekend! Many thanks!

I see you're also buying Fancy Feast (which my vet calls "McDonald's for cats"). I've switched to FF, too, because Iams was embroiled in the cat food recall and I'm having trust issues with Iams now. One of my cats has lymphoma, and I'm trying to keep him alive as long as he feels well. I know FF isn't the most nutritious food out there, but it wasn't recalled, which is a big plus for me. Is anyone else out there still stressing over cat food?

Posted by: MMC on May 25, 2007 at 4:16 PM | PERMALINK

Well, I'm not exactly stressing, but I do check the updated recall lists daily. I will not feed any cat food now with imported ingredients of any kind. Don't want to get burned twice.

Inkblot looks like he just ate the entire box of cat food. How's that diet going?

Have you ever polled - in our country's political tradition - to see who has a bigger following: Inkblot or Domino?

Posted by: Jonathan on May 25, 2007 at 5:25 PM | PERMALINK

Aahh. Thanks. I luvs me some Inkblot.

Check out the Panda's Thumb site for an article on "fishing" cats! They swim and have webs between their toes - no, really!!

I switched to Nature's Balance ... and it was recalled a month later. Now I have one cat with chronic renal failure (the vet can't explain why a cat with levels so high is doing as relatively well as he is) and the other had to spend two nights at the vet getting IV fluids to wash his kidneys out.

We went back to Science Diet Sensitive Stomach because they're one of the Menu Foods items that was never recalled.

That cat looks awfully well-fed, and in dire need of a nap.

FWIW, I have 8 rescued cats (and hoarding is such a judgmental term) at the moment. My husband and I tend to adopt elderly cats from the shelter, so their health is always an issue. Several years ago, we started feeding all our cats food that we get from Pet Sage in Arlington, VA. It's a holistic/natural pet store, and carries a wide selection of cat and dog food that doesn't have preservatives or other junk. We no longer have any problems with kitting vomiting (if someone throws up, we know they're sick), they're all at good weights, coats look great, etc. etc. None of the brands that we feed are on the recall list (Innova, Newman's Own, PetGuard, Merricks, Fromms (in my experience will turn the most finicky cat into a slavering beast of the jungle), Wellness, Evangers, California Natural, AvoDerm). They're a little more expensive than the brands that PetSmart and grocery stores carry, but they're very nutritious, so you end up not feeding as much. The staff there is very friendly and knowledgeable.

They have a website at www.petsage.com. And no, I don't have any financial interest in the store or anything they sell. They're just a good bunch of folks.

Next step for Inkblot - go upstairs, wait awhile (wait gets shorter with time), then come down and get you guys to go to bed.

Our cat loves the shallow boxes that 24 12-ounce sodas or waters come in. He doesn't quite fit anymore but he trys.

I really like cats. I was looking at some pictures of a lost loved cat earlier this evening. Pictures evoke past emotions of affection. I miss my kitty.

Once she got used to our schedule, our cat Tapestry, used to jump into out bed right about our usual bed time. A few impatient meows would remind us if we were running late.

Box 1, Inkblot 0

Rematch next week?

>I just didn't want people to think that the reason there was no picture of her today was because she had been run over by a car or something.

So the rumor that Inkblot was seen with a shovel was wrong. Whew. Good.

Posted by: James on May 26, 2007 at 6:25 PM | PERMALINK

Your cats, Kevin, are all right, but mine are cuter. That is probably the only thing we would both agree on, if you saw them.

Posted by: Mooser on May 27, 2007 at 10:19 AM | PERMALINK

But, of course, I won't violate my cat's privacy and put pictures all over the internet which these pictures could come back to haunt them in their dreams or if they try to get in to law school.
You are not doing them any favors.

Posted by: Mooser on May 27, 2007 at 10:24 AM | PERMALINK

LOL, very cute. Love the hind leg jutting out there while the rest of him surrenders to gravity.

Like women and smaller shoe sizes or men and their big trucks, Vanity....all is vanity.
