RSS FEEDS....Every once in a while someone asks me why we don't supply full RSS feeds here at the Monthly. Lazy slug that I am, my usual response is that I don't know. Then I lean back and eat another potato chip. But guess what? It turns out there's a reason I don't know: it's because it isn't true. We supply both partial and full RSS feeds. Here's the URL for the full feed:
http://www.washingtonmonthly.com/rss2full_author.xml
I suppose the next question is why we don't publicize the full feed, and this time I really don't know. Probably a decision lost in the mists of time. But it's there nonetheless.
Speaking of RSS feeds, a few weeks ago I switched to Google Reader just like everyone recommended, and it works pretty well. Thanks! It turns out that Bloglines has a feature that was actually sort of useful to me, namely that I could just click my browser's Back button to backtrack through the various feeds I'd just read. Google Reader doesn't let you do that, which means that it's harder for me to go back and remember where I just saw something a few minutes ago. Still, the "Starred Items" feature helps make up for that, and Google is generally faster and more flexible than Bloglines. So for now, Google Reader is it.

Even better than the star function, you can also search through all of the postings that you've read on Google reader.

Great. Now if only I could figure out how to edit Google Reader's setting to replace the partial feed URL with the full feed URL...

Awesome, thanks for the link.
Yeah, all GReader needs is some sort of "Random" function. I have too much crap on my blogroll already for a real full exploration.

Thank you so much for that link! Now I can read without leaving liferea, *and* easily search older posts. :)

Thanks. Really, God kills a kitten for every truncated RSS feed.

I've been subscribed to the partial feed for years :-)

Now, I use Sage, a plugin for Firefox, which works fast.

Thanks Kevin. I was just reading an article about this today (via a full feed on Google reader) and wondering why you didn't do full feeds. All fixed!

Now how about a mobile version for those of us with WiFi equipped phones and blackberry's.
It's a pain scrolling through all the left frame items to get to the daily bloggings.

Uhm... What's a RSS feed?
Seriously.

Kevin, you can search your feeds. So if you've read something recently and want to return to it, just search on a relevant keyword. Big plus is that this will turn related posts as well.

Isn't it kind of obvious why you guys don't publicize this?
If I'm reading your full post on an RSS reader -- which I will be doing starting in about 2 minutes, now that you've posted this -- then I visit the actual blog page far less often, thereby not viewing your ads or links to other WM articles, and, I suppose, skewing your page view statistics (less sure of that last).

This post made my day. Thank you!

Because supplying the full feed = readers don't have to actually come to the site = people don't see your ads.
Way to cost your company millions, there, Chief.

Yay! Given that in particular, that I am far more likely to read a post when it's in full in RSS. (I do read them all Kevin, I was just tending to come in and read them once a day after i switched to RSS.)

Uhm... What's a RSS feed?
Seriously.
If you want an answer type "RSS feed" into Google and click on the first link it finds, which is Wikipedia. That's called "searching the web" and you might find it useful :)

Thank you so much! This is awesome! Now if we can only get TBogg to do the same, I'd never have to leave Google Reader!

Okay, I am trying out this new-fangled RSS feed, using Google Reader. Is there any way to access the comments via the feed, or do I have to go to the site for that? I don't see any method.
Posted by: steverino on October 3, 2007 at 1:46 PM | PERMALINK
There's more to blogging than page views.
You still need to come to the site to participate in the comments (to answer your question, steverino).
And Kevin can still link to an article in the magazine via the RSS feed (which, IMO, makes me much more likely to click on it than if it's just hanging out on the sidebar).
Finally, the Monthly is a nonprofit, so they may be more interested in reaching more people than turning a buck. Especially if they can convince their big donors that they're reaching a larger audience. That's often the determinant of how much funding you can get: how large a community you serve.

I do know what rss is. What I can't understand is WHY is it better/faster/more convenient to read blogs through a reader, than just click on faves and go read the blogs?
I would really love to hear this; I keep saying to myself I should try it.
What do I have to look forward to?

I've come to the conclusion that just about my favorite part of Google Reader is the "Next" button, which I keep in my toolbar, and press when I have a couple of minutes to kill. It's also good for the blogs, since it takes me to their page, rather than a reduced feed page.
Also, it allows the back button on Firefox, but it seems to make it not work on Safari. I'm not sure why...
