AMERICA'S BEST POLITICAL BLOG?... Over at Occam's Razor, Mark asks who is the best political blogger, and concludes that it's Kevin Drum. "His blog on the Washington Monthly web site offers what I consider the best mixture of insight and content, much of which either cannot be found elsewhere, or which ordinary blogs do not deem worthy of comment...If you are a political animal like me, you too should be reading Kevin's Political Animal blog regularly. In fact, if your time is very limited Kevin's blog should be the only one you read. He is that good."
No argument here.

Then there is Friday Cat Blogging......
Sure it's not political, but then blog entries with pictures of cats are often more interesting than what passes as political commentary.

30 minutes and no entry from Kevin's self appointed assignment editor Steve Sailer?
Congratulations, Kevin.

Self-pimping is legal now?

Self-pimping is legal now?
No, it's Glastris pimping Drum. And with all the other blogwhoring that goes on around here now, why not? Nothing wrong with sharing your successes on your own site.

You know what's odd about this? About two hours ago I was surfing around and the thought crossed my mind that Kevin really is the best blogger, of any type, that I read. I've been reading Kevin for a long time, and I read a lot of blogs. And Kevin is the man.
Posted by: Martin on October 25, 2007 at 4:57 PM | PERMALINK
Well, chalk one up for the Gulliblogger.
Posted by: Disputo on October 25, 2007 at 4:59 PM | PERMALINK
Many of us who comment at Political Animal know this space is special because Mr. Drum and the Washington Monthly write about many current events on a daily basis, and are generous enough to allow others to discuss them.

must agree...

Why do I feel such a burst of pride that Kevin Drum got a nod as the Best Political Blogger from someone I've never heard of on a blog I only dimly know of??? Because Kevin Drum really does write the best political blog; Wonky graphs, thoughtful posts, challenges and questions that get his readers talking...So much to appreciate! Mark's praise is well-deserved.
And he doesn't seem to realize that KD is the man who created Friday cat blogging!

It's the commentors. Or is it commenters?
Way to go, Mr. Drum.

Mr. Glastris, I heard this morning it cost $5,000, then $10,000. What did this nick you for?
Posted by: paradox on October 25, 2007 at 5:33 PM | PERMALINK
That's exactly what I do.
My time is limited. I only read a handful of political sites anyway, and of those I skip over most of the posts in my RSS feed. But I catch most of Political Animal.
Now, please, make the RSS feed full-content. Put ads in there if you have to, but stop making me click on the site!

Kevin's is the only blog I read, for precisely the reasons stated in the post. Kudos, Kevin, and keep up the excellent work.

About a year ago I discovered blogs, & Kevin's was one of the first. I left here for awhile because the bomb throwing went out of control, but came back thanks to cross blogging from other sites & discovered Kevin was taking steps to correct the problem. Today it is a must read every day. Thanks, Kevin, for a well done job. Between your insight & feedback from the commenters, I have learned a lot & plan to keep learning.

After all, it could be that Inkblot is the real scribe and Kevin is just taking credit for nothing.
hhhmmmmmm, inquiring minds want to know.

I like PA because of the comment threads. There really is no content at Eschaton and most of the posters seem to be about 14 years old, and the folks at DailyKos take themselves way tooo seriously and they seem to have set that blog up to discourage people from commenting.

I think Kevin is definitely one of the best, but for whatever reason the posters here are head and shoulders above those on any other site I've found. This is the only forum where I reliably read the comments. I hope that doesn't change.
Posted by: shams on October 25, 2007 at 7:41 PM | PERMALINK
KD's my favorite. I usually read all the comments, too, something I don't do at the other sites because it's kind of a waste of time.

Very nice. To the careful and objective observer, Kevin is always the thinking being, succinctly proposing an opportunity for comment, offering good timing, substantive and topical material 24/7, with posts well written and poetic at times, in a way that an English major like myself tends to favor. Something brought me to this site, and I believe this is the substance of the attraction.

Kevin's quick witted analysis and the best commenters of any blog I visit make this site a daily ritual for me, though I rarely comment. You've done a good job on this blog Kevin. Congratulations.

I like PA. Okay, I really like PA. But, not to be a downer or anything, I think TPM and TP are just as good. While I go to Kos first from habit I actually read PA, TPM and TP and glance through Kos.

Congrats Kevin on a well-earned honor.
I love the cat-blogging of course. And I also appreciate the reflections on California politics (I'm a Cal ex-pat)not to mention the first-rate political analysis.
And, I get my students to read you as well. So I'm bringing new converts to the fold.
Just doing my part to sustain the cult of personality here.

Feel the love.
I think this is one of the best blogs out there. TPM is giving Kevin a run for his money, but they're too serious over there. I like the mix of earnest analysis and eccentricity that makes up PA. I'm a daily reader, and a yearly contributor. Congrats Mr. Drum -- you deserve the accolades.
Posted by: dt on October 25, 2007 at 11:15 PM | PERMALINK
Drum is so often bad that Drum being the best is really a point for the democratic nature of the blogosphere.
Posted by: Boronx on October 25, 2007 at 11:18 PM | PERMALINK
warren terrah: Okay, I recognize PA as Political Animal, and TPM as Talking Points Memo, but TP? I am sure when I find out I will be a Duh! moment, but it has me stumped for now.
I love TPM. I think Josh Marshall is doing some of the most innovative journalism in the 'sphere, but the ad format--those long interruptions--puts me off. And no comments! What's with that?
Posted by: PTate in MN on October 26, 2007 at 12:26 AM | PERMALINK
...Actually, I imagine when I find out what TP is, I will HAVE a Duh! moment, not BE one. Being Duh! is a pretty standard Tate state.

Kevin makes it intellectually respectable to be a liberal. He is my most favorite out of the 100 blogs in my favorites folder. I gave him $50 last week, the only blog I gave money to this year.
Posted by: Noumenon on October 26, 2007 at 9:45 AM | PERMALINK
Kevin does a good job on average, and attracts the most literate and yet also clever commenters. Only Brad DeLong and some similar attract similar high levels of intellectuality, but not as much cleverness. Sometimes poor Kevin seems a bit too naive or sissy though, about some Right-wing shenanigans and aspirations.
Posted by: Neil B. on October 26, 2007 at 10:05 AM | PERMALINK
PS: Yes, good to see PTate back commenting again (assuming that was the case, as I gather after an absence since I jump in and out.) PTate and cmdicely seem to make the most astute and literate comments here in any reliable way. Cmdicely is clearly especially sharp and informed. As for me, not so greatly impressive overall but here's what I think I contribute sometimes: Some insights and provocative "Socratic questions" you just might not have thought of otherwise, or in that way. I am really more interested in physics and philosophy, and have been commenting at the science blogs a lot. My own, Tyrannogenius, is here.

I rarely post comments anywhere, but do read them here occasionally. I've been visiting since the Calpundit days. TPM and PA are the two blogs I visit several times during the day, and I've also been reading TPM since Josh's early days. However, TPM has turned into much more of a group blog/media empire (I say that in a good way -and I think I cribbed that term of endearment for TPM from Kevin himself :) ), that's not really comparable to PA. While there are other posters on PA, it's pretty much all Kevin all the time, and as a blogger, Kevin is definitely at the top of the list. TPM, I rank as the best political news site on the Internet, period.
It's amazing how on top of things you can be be just checking out TPM and PA.

p.s. haven't heard from norm lately. is he in jail again?
You go to hell, sir! You go to H E L L ! ! !
I am not in jail and I am a snake, in the grass, waiting for a liberal to trip and become a snack for me. Yum, yum! Oh, wait! Liberals don't bathe and they eat a lot of vegetarian foods. Yuck! You have salty skin and brittle bones. You shall not be my snack today.
As for this blog--one of the absolute worst ever invented and about to be replaced by the blog that kid in Des Moines writes about how his mom won't let him wear shorts outside after October 15 of each calendar year--one could hardly read the above and not retch violently into a handy paper sack.
If they let ME post on the front page (and I've asked Charles Peters to do so) then what's the point? There is no BALANCE here. I would provide that balance. I would provide exciting content and witty repartee. Sadly, with the lot of you, we get dreary treatises on how your butts itch when you can't use your iPhones in tunnels.

a thread poster above says he remembers back to the calpundit days-----so do i.
i really liked the name calpundit a lot better for two reasons:
1)political animal has more than twice as many syllables
2)it is also at least twice as awkward to pronounce
Posted by: wschneid25 on October 26, 2007 at 2:06 PM | PERMALINK
one final comment:
one feature i like about calpundit-political animal is that kevin drum allows a
full range of commentary from his posters even some that is quite viciously anti-drum-----at times he shows the patience of a hindu holy man(far more patience than i think 99% of his
readership would be capable of)-----the chances of joshua
marshall printing a highly neg. JM comment is
almost zero and with andrew sullivan printing a highly neg. AS comment absolutely zero.
