TO INFINITY AND BEYOND....Karen Hughes, whose bubbly everywoman optimism was apparently still not quite optimistic enough, will be succeeded by James K. Glassman as America's chief image maven. As author of Dow 36,000, no one can accuse Glassman of not being boosterish enough, and as a longtime K Street disciple and founder of conservosphere favorite Tech Central Station, no one can accuse him of being insufficiently dedicated to Republican money-con principles. More about Glassman here from our December 2003 issue.

They should have hired the South Park guys. I can't imagine any of this being more effective than "America: Fuck Yeah!"

My most memorable Karen Hughes moment was on 9/11, when she appeared before the press during a refeuling stop on Air Force One's meandering cross-country odyssey that day, assuring the country that the president survived the attacks without ever addressing what just happened in New York and Washington. In retrospect, it was a seminal moment that goes far in explaining subsequent events.

The words "lipstick" and "pig" spring to mind.

Glassman's appointment is proof the American Century is officially over.

"What about the guy who wrote 'Dow 36,000.' Is he allowed to talk to people still? So can a doctor come on and go, 'You don't need your heart,' and they still go to him as your expert? It's insane. There's no accountability for this stuff." -- Jon Stewart, quoted in Rolling Stone, 2003

You gotta ask at this point what possible use could even a competent spokesman be? The whole exercise smacks of thinking that as long as you speak politely and smile while you're kicking someone in the groin that it makes everything okay.

Worth knowing that Tech Central Station is actually funded by a lobbying group with strong ties to conservative causes.
So the next time you see a TCS article expressing scepticism re global warming, you'll know that is likely because someone has paid for that article to be written and published.

This really is beyond satire, no? Perhaps he should follow Dow 36,000 with Baghdad 630,000?

You all don't know what you're talking about, obviously haven't actually read Dow 36,000 or the mathematical theory which supports it - and you obviously don't have the courage to take on a job as large as the one Glassman has agreed to tackle.
