WHO KNEW?....Over at Newsweek, the saga of the destroyed CIA interrogation video continues. Michael Isikoff and Mark Hosenball report that intelligence director John Negroponte provided direction about the tapes to CIA director Porter Goss in a 2005 memo...

...which records that Negroponte strongly advised against destroying the tapes, according to two people close to the investigation, who asked for anonymity when discussing a sensitive matter. The memo is so far the only known documentation that a senior intel official warned that the tapes should not be destroyed.

Later in the piece, they report that Goss was "dismayed" to learn that the tapes had been destroyed, thus perpetuating the story that Jose Rodriguez Jr., then chief of the CIA's National Clandestine Service, destroyed them entirely on his own despite contrary advice from virtually every other person involved in this. And maybe that's true. But Rodriguez is sure looking more and more like a classic fall guy every day, isn't he?

But We are Good, and They are Evil, so *anything* we do is, by definition, Good and justified to fight Evil!!

If Good We don't torture Evil Them, the US will lose! We'll be defeated and destroyed!

Waterboard both Goss and Negroponte until they come clean (pun intended)...

I may have missed this, but I was astonished to see on my bloglist that ONLY FARK.COM mentioned Mukasey's deciding we don't need any investigation of this, and not a word from you, Atrios, et. al....

Is there a better reason to call up our Judiciary Committee and make them eat shit over this?

Two senators, one cup.

Ah, zee old plausible deniability ploy.

Did Cheney have the last word?

I bet Rodriguez, an attorney, took some action to inoculate himself in the event the Cheneypaths attempted to throw him under the bus. He's certainly hired a high powered attorney.

A native speaker of Negropontese tells me that "strongly advise against" should be translated into English as "strongly advise."

I smell a pardon in the works.

Seeing Negroponte being the good guy is something to make your blood run cold. He's as murderous as ever, but they've managed to find guys even worse than him.

I'm with the person who noted that an obstruction of justice charge was a lot more comfortable than a war crimes charge. Not that there have to be films to pursue the war crimes aspect, but they do make it a lot more convenient.

I've come to a simple conclusion: Everything they say is a lie.

Everything.

All part of the pre-ordained Fascist coup, which in actuality had nothing to do with the events of 9/11:

Wider Spying Fuels Aid Plan for Telecom Industry
By Eric Lichtblau, James Risen and Scott Shane [New York Times]

... The N.S.A.'s reliance on telecommunications companies is broader and deeper than ever before, according to government and industry officials, yet that alliance is strained by legal worries and the fear of public exposure. ...

"... within two weeks of taking office, the Bush administration was planning a comprehensive effort of spying on Americans' phone usage. ..."

Kevin: "But Rodriguez is sure looking more and more like a classic fall guy every day, isn't he?"

He's a big boy, Kevin. He took that head coach's job at Michigan with his eyes wide open.

I think that Goss may have actually said that he was "shocked, shocked" to find the tapes had been destroyed, as an underling walked up to him and said, "Your demagnetizer, sir."

Posted by: biggerbox on December 16, 2007 at 8:45 PM | PERMALINK

By the standards of this administration, Goss is almost ethical, but he seems to be singularly unwilling to actually punish everyone involved in this criminal act. Everyone who gets involved in the Bush Administration seems quite willing to prove that he is an immoral, unethical, corrupt hack who doesn't care about this country at all.

Will they all be seeking political asylum in Saudi Arabia with bin Laden in 2009?
