FRIDAY CATBLOGGING....This is it. Possibly the last catblogging pictures ever taken with my old camera. Sniff. On Christmas I'll put up my traditional Inkblot ornament photo, and then I'll be off for a week, which means potential guest catblogging. (Exciting!) Then, in January, I'll unveil new and improved Friday Catblogging, thanks to advanced consumer technology.

So here's the final Irvine-based catblogging of 2007. Domino is upstairs, dramatically outlined in a lovely, warm patch of sunshine in the bedroom. She'll follow this sunshine all day: first to the stairs, then into the dining room, and eventually up on my desk in the study. Then, when the sun goes away, it's off to the pod for the rest of the day. Meanwhile, Inkblot is staring upward wondering what all the fuss is about. He wants me to come downstairs and open the door so he can frolic in the backyard. And so I did.

Meowy Christmas to Inkblot and Domino, and to their caretakers, Kevin and Marion.

Thanks for all you do, have a wonderful holiday. And same for all the great people who post here, keeping the fires of politics and a love of cats burning hotly.

Neen'r Neen'r, Santa brought me Shaun the Sheep for Christmas, the one that shivers. Anyone know where I can buy him his sweater?

I hate cats. Hate is a strong word, but I really do. I'm extremely allergic, they ignore owners and guest, and--I'm convinced of this--if they were bigger they would eat us without hesitation. BUT, that said, this week's catblogging consists of two wonderful photos. Still hate'em, but a bit less now. Merry Christmas!

Let me add my thanks for all your thoughtful and insightful posts. I start each day with "The Washington Monthly" and don't know how I managed without it! May you and your family have a wonderful holiday, Kevin. And may the cats get all the ear-scratches they want!

Those are wonderful portraits of the cats! Suitable for framing and giving as gifts... Merry Christmas, and a very happy New Year, Kevin. I enjoy your blog so much--thanks for all your great work.

How do you get your cats to stay still for pictures? Mine sees me going for the camera and move, and moves, and moves.

New York City hates cats.

It's Rudy Giuliani and his anti-ferret bigotry all over again.

Posted by: Roger Ailes on December 21, 2007 at 4:39 PM | PERMALINK

if they were bigger...

Some of them are bigger. We call them "lions" and "tigers".

... they would eat us without hesitation.

Pretty much.

Love the catblogging!!!!

Posted by: Susan on December 21, 2007 at 5:12 PM | PERMALINK

loved the Fox clip...that was one cat not going to stay there, no matter what,,,,

Re the bigger cats: there's a New Yorker cartoon, showing two guys in safari outfits on a grassy plain saying to each other, "Now we know we're in big cat country...." because they have just found a giant ball of yarn ...

I like the look of that shot, with Inkblot laying in a rectangle of light. So unlike cat photo stereotypes.

Posted by: Neil B. on December 21, 2007 at 5:22 PM | PERMALINK

Oops, I mean Domino in the rectangle. Same point. I am subject to switcheroo neurosis, or whatever (pick the wrong handle for water temp for example, which can really suck.)

Zachary: "I hate cats. ... [A]nd--I'm convinced of this--if they were bigger they would eat us without hesitation."

In your particular case, we'd probably enjoy toying with you first, by letting you think you're getting away before pouncing, and then playing a little tug-of-war by pulling two of your limbs in opposite directions at the same time. Frankly, you're damn lucky that we don't waterboarding, but only because we don't like to get splashed.

Heh - Can one still find the George Bush cat toy?

Here's Mike Rowe, currently of Discovery Channel's "Dirty Jobs," at his former job at QVC trying to convince a recalcitrant cat that it really wants to play with a cat tunnel.

Hey, where's optical weenie? Inkblot hasn't lost his campaign manager, has he?

Posted by: Kevin Drum on December 21, 2007 at 8:47 PM | PERMALINK

Great photos (and of course, great cats). The one of Domino is particularly stunning. But then, she knows that, doesn't she?

Thanks.

I can't believe how spotless your house always appears, Kevin. Do you keep a slave in the basement, or what?

"She'll follow this sunshine all day: first to the stairs, then into the dining room, and eventually up on my desk in the study. Then, when the sun goes away, it's off to the pod for the rest of the day"

Winter is one of the most stressful times for house cats. At any time the temperature could drop into the 50's and they'll be forced to share body heat to survive.

Zachary, you just haven't met the right cats. Mine certainly doesn't ignore me or guests. He's a social butterfly. So don't give all kitties a bad rap!

I'm here! Sorry I missed commenting on Friday - I had my appendix taken out late late Tuesday night and needed some time to recover.
