FRIDAY CATBLOGGING....Everybody's been feeling very frisky this week, which means plenty of good outdoor pictures for catblogging day. Maybe I'll even do some bonus catblogging tomorrow. Anyway, the weather isn't all that warm here, but it is sunny, and the cats are quite enjoying themselves.
In other news, Marian discovered by chance this morning that Arnie's Manhattan Deli, one of my formerly regular lunch spots, didn't close down after all five years ago. They just moved. Huzzah! So that's where I'm off to for lunch. (Note to real New Yorkers: no, I don't really know how authentic Arnie's is. They have really good seasoned fries, though.)

Gorgeous, simply gorgeous.

Inkblot looks like Monorail Kitteh! Domino seems a little to mature for her age. Maybe she needs a new play toy!

The cat pics just keep getting better. The kitties are extremely Sphinxy today....

The USS Domino seems to be listing a bit to starboard. I'd check the bilge pumps if I were you.

Clearly, there was something wrong with your camera last week, because this week's pictures show them to be downright svelte.
Posted by: junebug on January 18, 2008 at 3:27 PM | PERMALINK
I dunno about "svelte"... Inkblot looks like my neighbor riding his Harley-- just sort of spilling over the edges of the seat.

Can we please talk about Jonah Goldberg making an ass of himself during and after his interview with Jon Stewart? Seriously, it was hilarious.

why did you let your cats get so fat?
this's not caring for your animals, dude

Both shots remind me of:
CAT [kat] n. One hell of a nice animal, frequently mistaken for a meatloaf.

You're bringing home an Arnie's turkey sandwich for the kitties, right? RIGHT?

Re the NYC authenticity of your deli: you lost me at "seasoned fries."
Posted by: Charlie Murtaugh on January 18, 2008 at 4:03 PM | PERMALINK
Well, for one thing, I don't think I've ever seen SEASONED FRIES on the menu at ANY self-respecting NY deli. Guss' Pickles and Cheesecake maybe....but SEASONED FRIES????? Getouttatown!

Cats are beautiful as always. However, I always thought that cats who could run around outside and hunt squirrels and birds wouldn't become the lardasses that indoor cats tend to me ... these two pussies are proving that theory wrong.

Svelte? SVELTE? Are you crazy? They are great looking cats, though.
Posted by: phoebes on January 18, 2008 at 4:15 PM | PERMALINK
This is the catblogging moment of Zen, save Jonah Goldberg for the next thread thank you...
Svelte? Nah, check out the head to girth ratio...still some happy, fluffy kitties. ;)

Kevin,
This week's pic of Inkblot is very impressive - he looks so serious and presidential.
Can you photoshop a picture of the Whitehouse as background? We could then use that on his campaign signs and brochures.
INKBLOT FOR PRESIDENT '08
Oh and Domino looks so serious, like she's kinda scolding you. What did you take away her drinking glass?
Posted by: optical weenie on January 18, 2008 at 4:21 PM | PERMALINK
Re Domino’s picture: the eyes, Kevin, focus on the eyes. If the eyes are sharp, no one will ever notice the furry bodies are slightly out of focus.
Posted by: fafner1 on January 18, 2008 at 4:21 PM | PERMALINK
Wahoo! Friday! Cats! Seasoned Fries! Let's go!
....oh, wait. Guess I can't go unless Kevin takes his lap-top, huh.

Presidential is an excellent word. I can almost hear the Presidential March in the background.

Was Domino that fat when you got her, or do you just systematically overfeed your cats?
Posted by: greggy on January 18, 2008 at 4:26 PM | PERMALINK
Yay, Kitties!!!! I REALLY needed Friday to come this week.
Posted by: Joshua Norton on January 18, 2008 at 4:34 PM | PERMALINK
Okay enough with the chubby tubby comments. Inkblottipuss and Dominominion took a lot of guff last week.
Lay off, you'll hurt their feelings.
By the way, I was able to google Arnies Manhattan Deli. They just moved to Newport Beach, not 5 miles away from where they were. So Kevin, I don't understand why it took you 5 years to find them again?
Posted by: optical weenie on January 18, 2008 at 4:36 PM | PERMALINK
I guess it's relative, phoebes. I mean, didja catch last week's photos ???
Posted by: junebug on January 18, 2008 at 4:39 PM | PERMALINK
If they give you a hand-sliced corned beef sandwich that is 6 inches thick and covers the plate with a pound of slaw on the side and a few HUGE kosher pickles, it's authentic. Oh, and dense cheesecake with strawberries. And egg creams. And latkes. And gefelte fish. And matzo ball soup...
Oh lordy, I'm starving. I wonder if I can get to the Stage Deli in NYC and back to San Francisco in an hour.
Posted by: Joshua Norton on January 18, 2008 at 4:48 PM | PERMALINK
Oh, come on Joshua! I just ate my mouse....

Kevin - haven't you heard of Google?

My god, those cats are fat. Can they walk, or do you roll them about? Beautiful fur and eyes, though.
Posted by: shortstop on January 18, 2008 at 5:15 PM | PERMALINK
I just noticed. Your cats are fat.
Posted by: catlover on January 18, 2008 at 5:22 PM | PERMALINK
I've never seen a cat actually roll her eyes before, and here you've caught her in the act.
That's very hard to understand, you know. They never do that unless there's some blockhead around going on about...uh, nevermind. Nice pics.

Yes, immediately noticed Inkblot's Presidential demeanor.
What's his history with regard to the AUMF?
Posted by: little ole jim on January 18, 2008 at 5:29 PM | PERMALINK
Which AUMF - the one against terrorists or the one against Iraq?
Posted by: optical weenie on January 18, 2008 at 5:40 PM | PERMALINK
For those who are interested. Inkblot voted for the AUMF against terrorists. He didn't vote on the Iraq AUMF - at the time he was out of pocket working on the black side for special ops hunting down Al Quaidycat in Tora Bora. It was a harrowing mission and he barely escaped with his life intact. The net result being that more than half his hair turned white as a result.

fafner1: These pictures are both in focus. Shrinking them to fit on the blog and then jpegging them makes them a little soft all over, though.
As for Domino, she's looking at a bird that was flying right over her head. She didn't actually move or anything, but she did look up.

Jonathan Gold, the best food reviewer in the world, says that Langer's in L.A. is better than any NYC deli ... and I believe him. Like Jonathan, I've lived in L.A. and NYC; I've been to Langer's and NYC delis ... West Coast rules!

Some of you obviously have never owned cats. They're just like people - some are genetically disposed to being heavy. They can eat very little, but their metabolism is slow. Especially if they're not outside hunting their food.
Our pets have become as sedentary (and fat) as we are.
Posted by: Speed on January 18, 2008 at 6:16 PM | PERMALINK
The one on the left looks like a damned liberal. I bet your cats are both commies, Kevin.
Posted by: Conservatroll on January 18, 2008 at 6:18 PM | PERMALINK
Well, I have to surface just to tell you guys how much fun you all are - especially today.
Live by the column, Kevin - since way before you were getting paid. You're the only blog I read anymore.
I've had cats for 40 years - None were ever this fat, tho' - But once you neuter them, and unless they hunt, that's to be expected - Plus I and D are California cats! Isn't everyone/pet fat, dumb and happy???
Cheers to all of you and thanks for your well informed, thoughtful dialogues, day in day out.

Anyway, the weather isn't all that warm here...
Well, it sure looks a hell of lot warmer than the 15 degrees I dealt with this morning. There was a thirsty squirrel licking the frost off of the deck railing.

Domino was not that fat when he got her. She was a normal size, and she was beautiful. Past tense.
Both cats are now so unhealthily, grossly fat I no longer enjoy looking at their photos.

Inkblot - yes, very presidential.
Love cat Friday.

AUMF: Authorization for Unlimited Meat for Felines.
Of course Inkblot voted for it!

Yep, that's frisky all right.

I hate cats, unless they are kittens. Have you considered kittenblogging, or better yet, dogblogging?

Time for my first comment (I think). All you guys with mean comments about the girth of the kitties - lay off! As somebody else said, their feelings are gonna be hurt. And I can personally attest that cats have a predisposition to become fat or not, just like humans do. I had probably a total of 15 cats while I was growing up, and they were all outdoor cats in the sense that they were free to roam our farm as they pleased. They were all fed as much as they wanted to eat, in addition to the diet of mice and moles that they caught themselves. Most of them stayed fairly slim, but a few of them looked just like Inkblot and Domino do. So stop criticizing the poor critters, and enjoy the pictures!

Nobody's criticizing the critters, Beth. They don't have a choice about what they're fed.
And under the circumstances, worrying about their feelings is...well, let's just call it "fanciful."
Some of us are concerned about their health. Grossly overweight cats are highly vulnerable to kidney problems and diabetes, among other things, regardless of whether their obesity is genetic.
That's why I no longer enjoy looking at their pictures. They just look downright unhealthy.
I don't know what Kevin has been feeding them. Earlier he said it was "prescribed" by the vet, but unfortunately that doesn't guarantee it's the healthiest available. There's been some new thinking about catfood lately, and if the vet isn't up on it, he may be unknowingly recommending food that isn't good for them.
If Kevin is really interested in keeping his cats healthy, he should do some research and see what's what these days, make sure the vet knows what he's doing.

Get over yourselves. They are cats. Very beautiful, happy cats.

My cats are so much cuter than your cats, and I have no way to prove it. I really should crank up the ol' camera and get some pictures of my cats on the web. When I think of all the wonderful effects their cuteness could have if disseminated widely.
And your cats are well, chubby.
