A HELPING HAND....Jon Stewart has "friends of the show," and I have "friends of the blog." One of them is Blue Girl, Red State, and BG's computer is busted. Her other computer is busted too. So she needs a new one. I've already contributed to the new laptop fund, and if you can spare a few dollars for a worthy cause then head on over to her site pronto and hit the 'ol PayPal account. It'll get her back online, and that's good karma. And we all need good karma, don't we?

OK. She certainly adds to the discussion here. I mean she's no Al, but...

I'm a big fan of Blue Girl's, but push comes to shove wouldn't donating money to Obama (especially this week!) be an even better place to send a few spare dollars? That's the kind of karma that could benefit the country and even spill over a bit to the rest of the world for the next four to eight years.

And once you're done donating to Obama, what's a few more bucks in Blue Girl's direction? =)

Only when you get past the notions of good and bad karma will you ever truly be free from it and the cycle of rebirth and suffering.

Popular blogger requires other people to pay for essential equipment to operate her successful venture? Strange custom...

Posted by: PLANE on January 29, 2008 at 9:23 AM | PERMALINK

Ah, Kevin.

No. Blue Girl is my foursworn enemy. If her computer is busted, let her borrow against the future earnings of her "bolg", so that the market can price according, not some handout.

Yeah, why would Republican wingnuts bitch about giving someone a helping hand? Oh THAT'S right--they have their own special form of wingnut welfare--the Heritage foundation, the Justice Department, the Guiliani campaign, National Review Online, Meet the Press, etc...

You know, places where they get free money for shitty ideas.

It's not like any of you have any cash anyway, what with your schemes to buy precious metals blowing up in your face as we speak.

Eggforbrains: Blue Girl is my foursworn (sic) enemy.

Good enough for me. I'm planning on sending her a C-note.

Ah,Eggo.

Teach a man to fish and he may eat the bait.

Unless I'm mistaken, it's Stephen Colbert who more frequently describes past guests as "friend of the show."

Posted by: Grumpy on January 29, 2008 at 10:09 AM | PERMALINK

She really does need a new computer. She has a child in college who needed the good computer. What is a mother to do? She pulled an old computer out of the closet running some ancient OS, but it won't talk to the internet. Now she schleps down to the local public library to research and post.

For those of you who don't realize it, internet ad rates are nothing like print media advertising rates. They are horribly low. So low it is no wonder that very few sites can make it without some subsidy from a print publication or a foundation.

The average political blog is not a license to print money, it is an opportunity to talk back to the talking heads. That is what BG does with gusto.

Finally, Egbert, her worst post is better than your best. Oh, that's right you don't post, you merely kibitz.

Posted by: corpus juris on January 29, 2008 at 10:16 AM | PERMALINK

Grumpy is not mistaken. It's Colbert who mentions people as "friend of the show".

Of course, with friends like Kissinger...

biggie toback: nobody plays congas better when theyre drunk. that's a myth perpetuated by drunk hippies.

Egbert, you've convinced me to donate too.

Posted by: URK on January 29, 2008 at 10:43 AM | PERMALINK

egbert is my fivesworn enemy! I was going to plead temporary poverty, but he's convinced me to cough up what I can.

Blue Girl, are you sure egbert is your enemy? Or is he your best fundraiser over here?

Posted by: thersites on January 29, 2008 at 10:50 AM | PERMALINK

Hat tip to egbert...
That really was pretty funny.

Posted by: Al's left testicle on January 29, 2008 at 11:24 AM | PERMALINK

Egbert can't get right even a simple quotation we all learned in grade-school. His home schooling must have been by an illiterate relative. Pity.

I am happy to toss into Blue Girl's hat a small donation. Hope to be reading her posts here again soon!

"Of course, with friends like Kissinger..."

And Jane Fonda. And Peter Frampton. And Neil DeGrasse Tyson. And Kucinich and Huckabee.

egbert,

Sheesh. Every Minnesotan knows the correct proverb:

"Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and he'll sit in a boat drinking beer all day."

A better solution: Find someone that wants to get rid of a 4 year old laptop because it no longer runs overbloated Windows CE-ME-NT or whatever and install Xubuntu on it.

Posted by: CSTAR on January 29, 2008 at 12:22 PM | PERMALINK

CSTAR,

Y'know, I support the idea of freeware and all but I'm getting real tired of all the jargony names and terms. I know where they come from but I think it simply reinforces the programming 'priesthood' by using secret jargon.

I've never liked the term 'coding' either. For me 'coding' means 'encoding' meaning creating an unreadable text.

Sigh. But there is no stopping the tides.

She pulled an old computer out of the closet running some ancient OS, but it won't talk to the internet.

Get $20 worth of ram and an Ubuntu CD. (free, but amazon.com and its competitors are fast, a friend with a burner is even faster)

Maybe you need $10 worth of nic to get networking going.

Do it regardless what the paypal loot is, you can never have enough computers and letting them sit a a closet is such a waste.

Just how dead are we talking about? Does the screen come alive? Has there been unusual pop-up advertisements, warning messages or noise coming from the computer? Once you get the ubuntu disk, try booting from it. It lets most unix guru`s diagnose a lot of windows software problems in seconds.

Has anyone tried the laying on of hands?

You gotta say "Demons Out!!!" while you press the necessary buttons.

Oops - I may have already said too much ...

What kind of computer does she want/need? Dell has cheap desktops for $500. I would be willing to put up at least $100 towards the purchase, but I don't have a PayPal account (I don't want to open one either - just another way to get screwed over). Is there an e-mail where I can contact BGRS? I always use a bogus e-mail address in posting here, as I don't want my family killed by blood-thirsty, violence-prone conservatives, nor do I want to get spammed to death.

Tell me how to get in touch with BGRS and I will make sure she gets a new computer.

TCD,

Follow the link on Kevin's post, go to her site, there's a donation button on the right.

http://bluegirlredmissouri.blogspot.com/

She's probably close to her goal, but a few more will probably put it over the top.

TCD, from BGRS's website: BlueGirl.RedState@gmail.com

Thanks, I will drop her an e-mail. Regards,

Teach a man to spell and proofread his posts, and he won't sound so ape-shit crazy. Egbert's post had more errors than an early Mets game.

Tripp >"...For me 'coding' means 'encoding' meaning creating an unreadable text...."

Ever read any serious source ? "Unreadable" would be a polite term.
