"DIGITAL PAMPHLETEER"....Hey, guess who had a short video made about him? Friend o' the blog and frequent contributor Steve Benen. The video was made by Bill Simmon and won an award at the Vermont International Film Festival last fall. Steve talks about the video here. You can view it here (Quicktime format) or here (YouTube).

Luckily for me, none of my friends are filmmakers, so you'll never see me starring in a video like this. But if you're curious to see what that Benen fellow looks like in person, check it out. It's nicely done.

Cool video.

But, Kevin -- are you just going to leave that last poll post up without further comment? Look at the more recent 5 polls at pollster.com this AM!

I agree with him 100% that bloggers go beyond the "he said - she said" baloney that MSM give us. Bloggers actually say who is right and why. And then they give immmediate input for commenters. Sure beats the passive reading of the past.

This blog and the Carpetbagger are among those I read daily to learn the story behind the story! No other media do that.

One question I've been wanting to ask: how does Steve pronounce his least name?

Ben-en? Bean-en? Ben-een? Bean-een?

Posted by: Petronius on February 4, 2008 at 1:45 PM | PERMALINK

Erm, that's last name.

A short video about Benen must run about 9 hours. I've never known someone who could talk so much and say so little. If only he knew the meaning of "concise".

Interesting, but Steve's claim that bloggers can help people cut through competing claims by telling them "here's who's right and why" appears as naive at best. (Perhaps he meant it to apply only to unambiguously factual questions -- but he doesn't say so in the film).

Other than that fine, though the music interludes are somewhat loud and abrasive. The story of how he became "a political animal" is touching. The film-making is a bit overdone as is often the case with young film-makers. Fewer tricks, more Steve talking would have been better.

What's JS talking about? I'm an older film maker and what I liked about this was (a) the quality and simplicity of the camera work and (b) the trick-free flow of the piece. A few cutaways, a nicely lit and framed interview, the trouble taken to cut down the depth of field that makes so much small-format video look so crappy, and just a little fun with graphics.

And, through all that, a clear portrait of why someone does a difficult task that sucks up all his time.

This is good, economical, efficient film making. So there.
