FRIDAY CAT VLOGGING....Last night it occurred to me that my new camera also shoots video, so I decided to forge boldly into new frontiers and give it a try. Domino was sacked out in her pod and completely immobile, but luckily for me, Inkblot was puttering around at the time and eager to become a matinee idol. So today he makes his debut in a modestly budgeted YouTube production called "Inkblot's Evening Snack." Click for dramatic snacking action!
So that was fun. Turns out I shot the thing at the wrong resolution, but I guess that doesn't really matter. And I should probably track down some kind of simple freeware video editor for this stuff. Any suggestions? Also, why does my embedded clip pop up a bunch of links to other videos when you scroll your mouse over the bottom of the screen? Other embedded YouTube videos I've seen don't do this. How do I get rid of this?
[UPDATE: Hmmm. The popup links only appear in Explorer, not in Firefox. What's up with that?]
[UPDATE 2: Thanks, jerro!]
Next week: Domino's star turn! But first I need to get her to do something. Does rolling around in the backyard count?

That thing where YouTube offers related videos at the bottom of the screen -- it's a feature, not a bug. They will go away after a while if you just leave the screen alone.

I like it. I have inkblot-in-a-bag as my screen background...at work, so my own cats won't be jealous.

Very cool, Kevin! Mucho appreciado! I'm here at your site for the cats, but I get a bit of a political fix while I'm here, so it's all good.
Friday cat blogging.
Friday beer drinking.
Coincidence? I think not.

Oh, wait; wrong blog. Sorry.

Marian's laughing in the background makes it even better. But I have to say that it's strange to see Inkblot moving around....

How about a Blogginheads session with Inkblot & Domino? That's about the only thing that could get me to watch one of those episodes.
Posted by: junebug on February 8, 2008 at 3:22 PM | PERMALINK
No! Grossly grossly unfair.
I am at work and there is a very strict No YouTube policy in effect in this joint.
YouTube discrimination!
No cats....[breaks down and sobs hysterically]

What on earth is the movie in the background? The dialogue is really weird!

Is Marian feeding Inkblot potato chips? Does he like dip, as well?

Hey! We get to see Inkblot live! He's now more than just a photo on Friday afternoon (not, that we don't love the photos). Why don't you acquire a Ffeline Flyer (stick with a long string and a rotating feather thing on the end). That will attract them both, we can see them do goofy mid-air stunts and it will give them exercise. I use on with my cats and they (and therefore I) always sleep better.

I've noticed that Firefox has an internal firewall that plays havoc with videos, etc. They say it's for security reasons, and it works -- since I won't use them, they can feel secure.

Not as much fun as a roll in the hay.

Are you sure that should be titled Inkblot's Evening Snack? I mean there is a woman and a bed in the video. Shouldn't you call it
Inkblot's Evening Shack? And rate it XXX for heaven's sake.
This doom's Inkblots chance for the presidency, here is is on the bed, with a woman hand feeding him.

Get a Mac, iMovie comes free with it... 8^)
Easy to use, free, exceptionally capable of doing what you want to do and more.
Posted by: wc4d on February 8, 2008 at 4:36 PM | PERMALINK
If you were on a Mac you could use iMovie, which is aimed at consumers and can do edits, transitions, titling, video filtering etc. Even on a PC you could just look into upgrading to QuickTime Pro, which isn't free but isn't expensive, and lets you do some simple editing and import/export stuff, not to mention mucking around in the video/audio tracks, doing resizing etc.

why is hillary clinton feeding your cat?

For next week, I suggest you smear a picture of John McCain with catnip and let Domino have at it. You can call it 'Filet Meow'.

I use some free software to compress the raw video to a more manageable size.
If I want to edit the video, I use Adobe Premier Elements 3.0 -
I also have the newer version (4.0), but The 3.0 version seems to have more options for
creating .wmv or .avi (quicktime) or .flk files.

Kevin, don't you think it's controlling to pimp your cats out, in some weird sort of way, like this?
Posted by: Swan on February 8, 2008 at 5:32 PM | PERMALINK
LOL, that's really funny! Cool idea, Kevin. You've raised the bar for the entire blogosphere.
For your next video, how about Inkblot playing with a catnip mouse. Or maybe taking a crap in a litterbox shaped like Karl Rove's head.
Posted by: DanM on February 8, 2008 at 5:38 PM | PERMALINK
Now, my cat would take a couple of fingers along with the kitty treats, if we tried that . . .
:O

the secret to Kevin's cats' obesity is out ... it's the snacking inbetween meals.
Why am I so suspicious that those are not *healthy* snacks? What's the fat/sugar content of those snacks?
Next thing we'll learn is that Inkblot's humans are giving him catnip .... addicting the poor kitty to drugs....
Posted by: diana on February 8, 2008 at 5:40 PM | PERMALINK
Why do cats look embarrassed when they know they have an audience? And they get so dainty..
no chomped fingers, no snapping at the air like a starving pit bill..

Hey...they used to make catnip toys that looked like Newt Gingrich.
Updated version may be out there, somewhere. There's an amazing amount of pleasure in seeing a beloved animal getting blissful while chomping the head of a tiny version of a RW maniac.

Kevin, you've reminded me of the innovator of providing prostitutes to soldiers at war-- a God-fearing Baptist Southerner, the Confederate Civil War general, Joseph Hooker.
Posted by: Swan on February 8, 2008 at 6:52 PM | PERMALINK
Oops, Union general, that should have been...
Looks like I jumped the gun / assumed too quickly he'd have to be a Southerner is he was notorious whore-monger...
Well, folks, it ain't always true. Sometimes a Southerner teaches a Northerner to be a pimp.
Posted by: Swan on February 8, 2008 at 6:54 PM | PERMALINK
Oops, and it looks like it's a legend that Joe Hooker was a whore-monger, too. I'm a regular Shuster, today.
But hey, I said plenty of wonderful things about him. I didn't intend anything I said about him pejoratively. I should have realized some might misinterpret it that way. If anybody was offended, I apologize.

Get a Mac, iMovie comes free with it...
Kevin:
If you have a PC, Windows Movie Maker is a standard part of the OS. On my XP menu, it is found at start/programs/accessories/entertainment/windows movie maker. Your mileage may vary on its location. If all else fails when looking for it, do a search on Movie Maker.
I've used WMM lots and I have few complaints. It will assemble/edit multiple avi or wmv files, (haven't tried MP4), allow for add-on audio tracks for background above/below the recorded audio from camera, provide titles, transitions, clip editing, etc. Major drawback: no way to edit the avi audio separate from the avi video except to turn down the volume. You can also insert still pics in a movie, and make the stills from frames within the movie. Email me if you want some time-saving pointers.

This is piss poor.
First, thersites questions Inkblots authenticity.
Next, Weenie fails to defend Inkblot, indeed, throws in the towell on the Presidency.
Erok asserts that it's Hillary who is feeding Inkblot.
mattstan only regrets not making the accusation first.
swan takes takes it to the next level, pimping.
A couple of weeks ago, Inkblot reflected our best hopes and dreams.
Now... he may as well be a Clinton.

I can no longer hold back. Inkblot is obviously my late Dexter Gordon, brother to the also late George Gordon, reincarnated. He's about the same weight (the only obese cat, save one who was also abandoned by her mother, I ever owned), has the same moves, and -- obviously -- loves to eat.
Dexter was abandoned by his fickle mother when he was not yet weaned, and I raised him and his brother on goat milk. He slept on my head every night for years and years. As a baby he had some kind of liver (?) shunt problem, and he didn't grow. The vet told us to keep him inside (I live on a farm) and baby him because he had no reserves. Dexter took that advice to heart (or maybe to butt) and developed serious reserves. He lived to a ripe old age but died of cancer. He is still deeply missed.
Watching the video of Inkblot is like having Dexter back for a short while.
