THINK TANK LEAGUE TABLE....Apparently 2007 was a bad year for think tanks: FAIR reports that overall media citations were down 17%. I blame blogs. Brookings is still the undisputed heavyweight champ, followed by CFR and a trio of conservo-tanks. Cato comes in at #9, not bad for a scrappy libertarian outfit. The New America Foundation bucks the overall trend and gets top honors in the year-over-year rankings, with a 44% increase in citations. EPI does worst, clocking in at -52%. A complete list of the top 25 think tanks is below.

I'm fairly sure all decisions, at this point, are decided by the M1 think tank.

At the carnival celebrating the impeachment, can we have a think tank dunk tank?

At the carnival celebrating the impeachment, can we have a think tank dunk tank?

And can the dunkees be from AEI, and can there be hungry sharks in the tank? Hell, I'll settle for pissed off piranhas, and work on my throwing arm, if we can put the Kagans up one-by-one.

Why is AEI so noted? Their thinking is tanking.

I think the political orientation options should be more along the lines of:

Sane
Relatively Sane
Wimpy
Thug
Unrealistic
Fairly Unhinged
Batshit Insane

I leave it to the reader to apply as they see fit ;)

My very fast calculations have citations of:

conservative tanks: down 19%
centrist tanks: down 16%
center-left tanks: up 4%
.
Hey, there's a trend here
.
.
.
.
.
but then,

progressive tanks: down 38%

Kevin, you have a typo. You put an "s" on the front of "crappy" in you description to the Cato Institute.

Posted by: aaron aardvark on March 28, 2008 at 4:47 AM | PERMALINK

You have 4 progressive think tanks, and 2 "center-left" think tanks, whatever the hell that means. And does anyone think that the Urban Institute concerns itself with the whole mish-mash and rigamarole of liberal-vs.-conservative politics, or does it stay focused on, hey, urban issues? So you have four progressive think tanks, and since they've been granted that magical word "progressive," I'll assume, gee, they're actually liberal.

As for the rest: conservative or fascist, conservative or fascist, conservative or fascist. Saying you're "libertarian" just means never having to say you're sorry. The Rand Corporation "centrist"??? Ha-ha-ha-ha-HA! It's named for fucking Ayn Rand. Yeah, libertarian goddess--what crap. She was Hitler with tits. To her, grinding down poor people and using them to make your bread was "cool," "fashionable," "avant-garde."

Studying whether any of them are up or down in citations seems pretty meaningless. The important thing is there are still virtually no liberal voices out there in the think-tank world, and all of the numerous-pound gorillas are all Fascist Pigs. (Heritage Foundation, cesspool of whores, I'm talking to you.)

The RAND Corporation isn't named after Ayn Rand; it's an acronym of Research ANd Development. Moron...

As things for the average worker and average family get worse in the ecomomy, I'd expext EPI's numbers to fall even further.

Shooting the messenger is the preferred form of outdoor sport in the media.

And given the popularity -- I'm looking at you, Slate.com -- of knee-jerk contrariansm -- I'd expect Cato's to increase in direct proportion to the extent of failure we're seeing of unregulated finance.

I see the "R' and the "and" but there hasn't been any development in 7 or 8 years.

Posted by: TJM on March 28, 2008 at 9:00 AM | PERMALINK

RAND insiders refer to the acronym as referring to "Research And No Development".

And yes, RAND is very aggressively centrist, shying away from anything overtly political.

Posted by: EB on March 28, 2008 at 10:43 AM | PERMALINK

Seems like somebody is paying good money for bad "thinking".

Should they still be called 'think tanks' or just 'Conservative Bush Republicans'?

Posted by: MarkH on March 28, 2008 at 10:58 AM | PERMALINK

RAND is not centrist. Apolitical, maybe, but not centrist.

I think EPI's down-rating can be linked directly to MaxSpeak! no longer being live.

Where oh where is Max??????? I do love me some Max Sawicky.

At least people have stopped calling Brookings a liberal think tank. So I consider that progress.

And why do conservatives have so many think tanks when they do so little thinking?

Seems a bit counterintuitive ...

Posted by: Mark D on March 28, 2008 at 11:57 AM | PERMALINK

Thersites:
I'll put you down with my vote for "Best Idea Evar" - Think Tank Dunk Tank.

(the piranhas modification sounds good - my idea was something along the lines of a big public chipper-shredder machine).

These "think-tanks" are among the worst symptoms of the plague that is slowly destroying our species. It is long past time for some mitigating remedy against them and their disgusting enablers in the media.

Posted by: osama_been_forgotten on March 28, 2008 at 1:43 PM | PERMALINK

Wow, liberal think tanks aren't even in the top 25.

Who the hell cares?

Posted by: jrw on March 28, 2008 at 3:01 PM | PERMALINK

The CSIS is not conservative. It is one of the most clear-headed groups for accessing risk and analyzing conflicts. They shat on the Iraq war from the git-go.
