A NEW ISRAEL LOBBY....A new pro-Israel lobby, JStreet, has been started up as a moderate counterweight to the increasingly hawkish AIPAC. Laura Rozen reports:
"What has happened in the political world is that the people both elected [to Congress] and candidates and the folks around them have come to believe that the only way to speak to the Jewish community is to take the most right-wing position,' [Jeremy] Ben Ami said. "There is no political benefit to be at the center."
....For now, Ben Ami tells me he is working out of his basement, the organization has no headquarters and doesn't plan for one, and plans to operate heavily in the online world. "We're following the MoveOn model, of being virtual, and heavily online," Ben Ami says. "Part of our goal and plan in the coming year is to develop an online presence in the way that Obama and Dean and MoveOn have done ... and to tap into that and have a large base of small donors."
Well, the journey of a thousand miles etc. etc. Good luck to 'em. God knows AIPAC could use the competition.

"..candidates and the folks around them have come to believe that the only way to speak to the Jewish community.."
If true, then either it is the profound and crass stupidity of candidates, or an enormous and illegal brainwashing system.
This statement cannot be true, it is a lie.

The pro-Israel lobby manages to portray poor-little-Israel as having no friends and needing all the help it can get, while completely - and conveniently - omitting any mention of the fact that Israel is a nuclear power.
This is not only supremely dishonest, it is ultimately counter-productive to Israel's security.
In the meantime Israel's treatment of Palestinians is beyond shameful.

Ben Ami? I think that's what I use to clean my bathtub. Hasn't scratched yet!

"increasingly hawkish AIPAC?" At what point was AIPAC not hawkish?

Doesn't Ben Ami realize that the only way to truly support Israel is to defend it's government no matter what it does? And that destruction of every country around it (via the U.S. military, natch) is of the utmost importance?
/snark
Someone will accuse him of being an anti-Semite in 5 ... 4 ... 3 ... 2 ...

The concept that it is in Israel’s interest to live in a stable more moderate neighborhood just doesn’t seem to get much traction. Actions ranging from the assassinations of moderate west bank Arab mayors following the 6 Day War up to the destabilization of Lebanon and the undermining of Fatah suggest a new definition for chutzpa: when a country destroys its moderate neighbors, and then announces it deserves sympathy in the court of world opinion on the grounds it is surrounded by radicals.

"God knows AIPAC could use the competition."
Has God been known to recommend such lobbies?

I think we need to get rid of ALL lobbies, put our government back on track.

I wish them the best of luck and hope they can blunt the influence of AIPAC.
But why did they choose JStreet as their name? Is it because they plan to have more of a virtual presence (there's not an actual J Street in DC) or does it stand for Jewish? just curious.
