QUOTE OF THE DAY....From Sen. Jim Webb (D–Va.), responding to John McCain's claim that Webb is obstructing negotiations on a proposed new GI bill:

"He's so full of it."

According to Webb, "I have personally talked to John three times. I made a personal call to [McCain aide] Mark Salter months ago asking that they look at this." McCain is using Webb's alleged unwillingness to negotiate as an excuse not to support his bill.

Have you all noticed, Kevin Drum has started the General Election Campaign without waiting for a Democratic nominee. I love it. Keep it up Kevin. Maybe the MSM will begin to look at McCain.

Time for McCain to unleash his "legendary temper and .. use foul and obscene language" with Webb on this GI education bill.

Isn't that the ONE quality we are looking for in our next POTUS?

Think about it.

For instance, what if when asked a question about China's rise in global markets,...

The f--king Chinese can be such jerks, said President McCain at the whitehouse today at his press conference.

I love it when a politician can tell it like it is. No vague commentary, e.g. "we have different recollections of the incident", just straight up "McCain is a damn liar."

The thing I really like about Sen. Webb is that he doesn't become a whinny ass Dem the minute Repugs become nasty. Webb is going on the defensive about this bill and McCain doesn't really want to support ANY GI benefits. Why do I know this, because long-term military members don't go to college, they make the military their career.

McCain said he would NEVER stand in the way of any GI benefits. That SOB lies just like Bush lies, because he is standing in the way of one right now, McCain is NOT going to give war veterans ANYTHING.

Right. And did you folks see that story on NBC (likely others as well) about the horrible conditions in the barracks at Ft. Bragg? I know, Dems have been in charge for a short while but I still think that Repub. chickenhawks have major responsibility, since they made it so hard to pay for.

More about McCain: Check Fareed Z.'s piece on McCain wanting to kick Russian out of G-8, not let China in, the idiocy of that neocon rubbish. But FZ wonders if McCainiac will get the scrutiny by the press. It's so ironic, the dextro noise machine was (correctly for a change) saying that "Saint" McCain is the darling of the press etc. Now that he's their nominee (despite the pretense of saying they hated him and would rather see Hillary etc.), they need to pretend that the press is out to get him (they got a wedge on that with the lobbygirl story. Well, the lobby part was still relevant and is anyone keeping up on that? TPM?

I though we would be hearing more of Webb after the great rebuttal speech he made to something or other.

Posted by: Luther on May 1, 2008 at 2:45 AM | PERMALINK

"I know, Dems have been in charge for a short while"

??? In charge of what? While I have nothing but contempt for the pathetically ineffectual Reid and Pelosi, it's still Bush in the White House and his corrupt stooges leading all the many departments in the federal bureaucracy.

And, needless to say, it's still the same crew of gutless, parasitic mainstream "journalists" — Russert, Matthews, Stephanopoulus, et al — who are ignoring the issue.

Posted by: bluestatedon on May 1, 2008 at 5:19 AM | PERMALINK

And I agree that Webb would be a great VP candidate for either Clinton or Obama. The only problem is that it would remove one of the few Democratic Senators with any spine from the chamber, and who knows what kind of limp, simpering Democrat would be chosen to replace him.

Posted by: bluestatedon on May 1, 2008 at 5:23 AM | PERMALINK

bluestatedon,

Your statement, "Who knows what kind of limp, simpering Democrat would be chosen to replace [Webb]" reflects your profound ignorance of Virginia politics.

Assuming Mark Warner replaces John Warner this fall there are a number of good choices to replace Webb should he be selected as Vice President. Virginia Democrats have been in training for years; none of the leading candidates for statewide office are "limp and simpering," as you suggest.

Creigh Deeds, who lost the last election for Attorney General by just 437 votes statewide, would be a fine choice.

It's pretty obvious that McCain, like all other Republicrats, means "cave in" when he says "negotiate."

Saint John will talk with Webb when Webb agrees beforehand to do what Saint John wants. After all, Saint John IS considering Secy. Rice as his running mate, and that's been her idea of negotiation for years.

Vote Democratic to avoid Bush III.

diminishing power

Being taken for granted by any political party results in diminshing power. However, Mr. Drum makes a good point. Activists able to opine on the internet have little power to influence the selection of candidates for mainstream political parties. Although Political Animals spend a great
deal of time, energy and even money on the political process through the internets, they are not able to diminish the power of mass media to mold public opinion.

Most antiwar advocates have supported the Democrats. In 2004 that support left them with a pro-war candidate. In 2008 their choices have been narrowed down to almost the same kind of candidate. Both want to rebuild the military and state the nuclear option will always be available.

Most antiwar advocates do not support Cindy Sheehan and dismiss eloquent and sincere liberals, who best represent their views, as unelectable or anti-American. Even if McCain is elected in 2008 and destroys the American dream and freedom, like I think he will, in 2012 antiwar advocates and social liberals will still end up supporting a McCain lite as the next Democratic presidential nominee. Liberals and leftists need to abandon the moderates of the Democratic Party and back only liberals who best represent their views. If their candidates do not become members of the Party's slate, they should not vote for them in the general election.

Citizens' only power comes from the voting booth. The system has been rigged to ensure only establishment candidates are on the ballots, which they know voters will still choose from, even for those candidates antithetical to their politics. No change to establishment policies will come about until voters stop playing this game.

Until W. Bush became president and his invasion of Iraq, I refused to participate in this game, usually voting for third party candidates, especially in national elections. The distress and opposition to the invasion and occupation of Iraq has led me to oppose the current administration by voting for candidates that did everything they could to enable W. Bush's wars and assualts on civil liberty. Like the Americans whose fears after 9/11 were exploited to start wars, my distress at those wars has been exploited to vote for candidates that do not represent my best interests. W. Bush has made us all blue collar Reaganites.
