MORE ON SISTANI....Why did Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani choose this particular moment to start issuing fatwas approving of armed attacks on American troops? Juan Cole has some speculation.

Kev,
I've got no idea about Sistani, but in light of your post on gas prices and peak oil yesterday, I wanted to offer my own, for anyone who hasn't checked it out yet.

Already read your thoughts on peak oil. Somewhat specious. Quit hijacking.

The barrel of fish-sytle of killing of Sadr City Shiites by the Americans and their Iraqi mercenaries should arouse defensive action to protect these civilians.

Al-Sistani knows that Bush Handlers, Inc. is trying to portray itself as Jesus during the last battle between good & evil & he`s not buying into that game. He knows, as do all that are "awake", that Bush Handlers, Inc. are The Sons of Perdition.
May the Gates of Hell open up to receive them. And soon.

That seems quite a leap. It doesn't appear that there is a "particular moment" here--more the constant attempt by Sistani to balance the ebb and flow of indigenous interests (i.e., Sadr et. al.) and the (US-backed) Iraqi government.
If anything, this appears to be more of a warning that, as much as Sistani considers law and order a good thing, he will not tolerate that as an excuse to promote Iraqi government and US interests above that of indigenous/nationalist interests.

Have we learned nothing over the past 7+ years? There is ONE source making these claims, so we don't really know if this is even what Sistani believes & says.
But if it is true, what else would we expect considering all that has happened lately?
