BIBLICAL....The latest calamity to hit the Beijing Olympic Games is a plague of locusts. Seriously.

Maybe the locusts can eat the algae?

I have a feeling that Beijing will be the most disastrous Summer Games to date. The Chinese are simply not ready for something this big socially or otherwise. They will be, probably, in another decade. But just as the WTO jumped the gun, so did the IOC.

Beyond that, given Beijing's sub-Houston air quality, it was a dumb choice.

The athletes can add pesticides to the normal load of Beijing pollutants. This isn't going to be pretty.

Pretty sure there's a communist initiative and associated slogan that could solve that problem.

It is an absolute disgrace that the Olympics are being held inside a military dictatorship; a nation with arbitrary courts and with a willingness to execute its citizens that would make George W Bush blush.

China is a disgusting nation, and I do think there is such a thing as Karma.

Birds of a feather, SteinL. Birds of a feather.

Turn the coal-fired power plants back on and kill the locusts.

For the best book on today's China: Empire of Lies: The Truth About China in the Twenty-First Century by Guy Sorman.

Well, now some lazy scam-men who don't have a more honest way to make a living will be able to convince people that this perfectly natural occurence was ordered by a God who also wants the people to pay the scam-men's bills-- as usual.

Me, I'd rather have a scientist around who explains things like this in a way that allows us to predict when it will happen again, instead of a bum who keeps claiming that divine retribution is on its way and keeps getting it wrong again and again.

There's a global-warming ironic twist, too: The story notes that a warmer-than-normal spring caused the outbreak.

On second thought, turn off more of the coal-fired plants.

Speaking as someone who lives in the Chicagoland area and will be forced to pay for the 2016 Olympics if Chicago is chosen as the host city, it is my fervent prayer that these Games (as well as London in 2012, despite being the title of a classic Rush album) are a total fracking disaster from every point of view. The IOC is a mini-UN as to its corruption and cronyism and everyone connected to it should it be swallowed from the face of the Earth.

A plague of locusts would be OK with me. Thank You God.

You're welcome, Chico. Starve a few million Chinese people so you won't be inconvenienced? No problem.

I'm here for you sweetie!

Pretty sure there's a communist initiative and associated slogan that could solve that problem.

The CCP has probably hired Karl Rove for this task.

The death of all the firstborn sons in the final act of the biblical curses would surely be a disaster, since most families are allowed only one child.

But, since the ratio of young men to young women is very lobsided (female fetuses are aborted quite often because Chinese prefer a boy to girl when limited to one child - to care for them in their old age), perhaps some measure of party could be attained again. [this is only snark, not a wish].

whoops, above: parity, not party; and lopsided not lobsided. sorry!

Meanwhile, the AP is reporting W will attend the opening ceremonies...

Some folks support awarding the Olympics to China as a reversal of isolationism and an attempt to bring China into the mainstream; a reward for their increased openness.

I do not share this view. I think their sins still far outweigh their improvements, and that the Olympics will only serve as a platform for them to present a false impression of their society. We may all know that they’re hiding their wretched poor, covering up their egregious environmental crimes, and suppressing any political dissent. But the platform will still work; the casual observers world-wide will soften their opinions of China after seeing all of the Olympic hype.

I would rather see China held to stricter standards; monitor their industries and demand compliance or deny trade. (Wouldn’t it be nice if the world held the U.S to the some standards too?) And, too late now, but we should’ve denied them the Olympics platform.
