FRIDAY CATBLOGGING....Sorry, felinophiles, but I haven't seen any cats in Austin, so no catblogging today. Let the wailing and rending begin.....

Oh, for heaven's sake. Go to the local animal shelter and snap some pix. What the heck is wrong with you?

Where's MY barbecue?

Posted by: Inkblot on July 18, 2008 at 3:24 PM | PERMALINK

If you take pictures under the right bridge, you could do some batblogging.

Posted by: scott_m on July 18, 2008 at 3:29 PM | PERMALINK

If Austin has solved the feral cat problem, please investigate how and report back. We're damn near overrun out here.

Posted by: Linkmeister on July 18, 2008 at 3:32 PM | PERMALINK

No Inkblot? Oh dear. Does anyone know what one is supposed to take to help get through Inkblot Ogling Withdrawal?

Posted by: optical weenie on July 18, 2008 at 3:35 PM | PERMALINK

Wail...rend....okay, everyone have a great week-end.

Posted by: Zit on July 18, 2008 at 3:39 PM | PERMALINK

I'm a little disappointed. I cruised over here specifically to find out how you were going to handle catblogging from Austin. I guess I found out, but I was hoping it would be handled and there would be cats. Which is kind of messed up; I don't even like cats.

Posted by: Scott Herbst on July 18, 2008 at 3:40 PM | PERMALINK

Kevin, you know you don't want to piss off Weenie. There could be a Domino effect.

Posted by: thersites on July 18, 2008 at 3:42 PM | PERMALINK

Thersites,
Have Optical take two cat-sules and call you in the morning.

[was that a groaner?]

Posted by: Zit on July 18, 2008 at 3:51 PM | PERMALINK

Zit,
That was a groaner. But I laughed anyway.

Posted by: optical weenie on July 18, 2008 at 3:55 PM | PERMALINK

Kevin, go under the Sixth Street Bridge at dusk and BATblog!

Anyway, Friday SCATblogging is about a weighty problem with elephants at San Diego Wild Animal Park.

Posted by: SocraticGadfly on July 18, 2008 at 3:55 PM | PERMALINK

Why this lack of planning and foresight is practically Rumsfeldian.

Posted by: Quaker in a Basement on July 18, 2008 at 3:55 PM | PERMALINK

we're all groan-ups here.

Posted by: thersites on July 18, 2008 at 3:56 PM | PERMALINK

:)

Quaker, then maybe next Friday we can expect a surge of cat photos?

(No! I did not just try for two in a row!)

Posted by: Zit on July 18, 2008 at 4:02 PM | PERMALINK

Ask your fellow blogmeisters to help - Marcotte has cats, in Austin: time to extend the furry paw of friendship!

Posted by: firefall on July 18, 2008 at 4:10 PM | PERMALINK

Kevin,
At the very least, you could of taken a picture of BlueGirl snarfing down her barbecue and posted it!

I suspect this sudden change in behavior is a result of your new Mac laptop. Special needs folks are known to suffer from ADHD.

Kevin wrote: "I haven't seen any cats in Austin"

They have all been rounded up and barbecued. Mmmmm, yummy.

Posted by: SecularAnimist on July 18, 2008 at 4:22 PM | PERMALINK

Weenie,
don't give them new fundraising ideas.

Posted by: thersites on July 18, 2008 at 4:30 PM | PERMALINK

Thersites,
I don't mind giving. And a picture of BlueGirl eating barbecue would be a big improvement over the one Kevin put up last fall. You know, the one with Inkblot humping a thermometer.

Posted by: optical weenie on July 18, 2008 at 4:35 PM | PERMALINK

Kevin

I really like this blog, but how can you title it Political Animal and have it under the wing of The Washington Monthly and spend so damn little effort on politics???? Every time I want to read what like-minded folks think of the pros and cons of, for example, Obama's trip [personally I'm afraid it could turn out to be his version of a Mission Accomplished photo-op] I have to go to a less satisfying venue. Please try to develop some enthusiasm for this race, or invite in some guest bloggers to pick up the slack.

Posted by: loki on July 18, 2008 at 4:37 PM | PERMALINK

Maybe the correct term would be ailurophilia?

Posted by: Carol on July 18, 2008 at 4:39 PM | PERMALINK

Weenie: I don't mind giving.

What would you pay to see a picture of me eating a tofu hot dog? I'm easy, y'know.

Posted by: thersites on July 18, 2008 at 4:40 PM | PERMALINK

Thersites,
I don't believe in animal cruelty. So I wouldn't pay anyone to eat a tofu hotdog. (blech)

Posted by: optical weenie on July 18, 2008 at 4:44 PM | PERMALINK

Linkmeister,

We had a mild winter here in Austin and there are kittens in abundance. The shelters are giving cats away, no adoption fee, and kittens are $25.

We do catch, spay, and release with the ferals. Please people, neuter your pets.

Posted by: Stuart on July 18, 2008 at 4:46 PM | PERMALINK

It's okay, they're made from free-range soybeans.
And you've never minded being cruel to be before.

Posted by: thersites on July 18, 2008 at 4:51 PM | PERMALINK

Are you groaning to start rending, or what?

Posted by: Jet on July 18, 2008 at 4:55 PM | PERMALINK

scott_m called it. You should batblog at sunset.

Posted by: shortstop on July 18, 2008 at 4:59 PM | PERMALINK

I spent 3 months last winter living and working in Austin. You should go to the alley behind the apartment I rented -- it was always crawling with cats back there, especially at night.

That's the alley just south of Johanna Street, between South 5th and 6th Streets.

Posted by: nemo on July 18, 2008 at 5:02 PM | PERMALINK

And the nashing of teeth! Don't forget the nashing of teeth!

Posted by: A Different Matt on July 18, 2008 at 5:04 PM | PERMALINK

ANY ROADKILL??

Posted by: Fred Flintrock on July 18, 2008 at 5:10 PM | PERMALINK

You mean to tell us you, Kevin, have not trained your cats to take pictures of themselves?

What kind of a cat-parent are you?

Sigh...

Posted by: James on July 18, 2008 at 5:11 PM | PERMALINK

[Wailing, rending]

Amanda Marcotte lives in Austin, you've just been on the fuck panel with her, and I think she has a cat you might be able to borrow . . .

[/wailing, rending]

Posted by: rea on July 18, 2008 at 5:37 PM | PERMALINK

When in Texas so find another animal, like a horse or something.

You're in Austin - they have cute armadillos and jackrabbits - please, no pics of any dead ones, however easy that my be.

Posted by: Me_again on July 18, 2008 at 5:38 PM | PERMALINK

It's totally inexcusable, Kevin. We expect two pictures each of Inkblot and Domino next week...

Posted by: pol on July 18, 2008 at 5:39 PM | PERMALINK

what? No cats! I'm outta here

Posted by: apeman on July 18, 2008 at 5:51 PM | PERMALINK

A few years ago, there was an enormous population of feral cats at the Salt Lick Barbecue. Don't know if it's still there or not, though.

Posted by: Alan on July 18, 2008 at 5:54 PM | PERMALINK

There's some cute turtles in the holding pond next door to the convention center.

Posted by: Crissa on July 18, 2008 at 6:34 PM | PERMALINK

MEEEOOOOWWWWW!!

Posted by: Rck B's cat Mitzi on July 18, 2008 at 7:02 PM | PERMALINK

I heard that exact same complaint from Mitzi when her food bowl remained empty past the appointed time. She makes sure that doesn't happen very often.

Mitzi is a 4 1/2 pound gray, white and brown tabby. We have called her Meowsama bin Laden since 2001 because she rules our household with an iron paw.

Even the 25 pound terrier (a westie) avoids her ire. The 32 pound Sheltie mix is something of a wimp - but terriers aren't much as herding dogs as far as I know either. Both are intimidated by Mitzi when Mitzi considers it necessary.

No cats in Austin? You should look harder. And since it's Austin, they're probably very cool cats. Here in Houston we just have lots of ferals, most of whom we seem to spend our lives feeding.

If you'd rather see bats, go to the famous bridge overlooking the river and watch the bats at twilight. It's amazing. There's an oldish hotel right next to the bridge, don't remember the name, but the bats are quite a sight.

Hmmm. This may be a little out there, but perhaps someone could invent some sort of instrument that allows you to reproduce images of things and store them for a future time when you may want to use them for just this sort of thing.

I'll bet they could make a nice little sum of money with such an invention. If they weren't burned as witches.

No cats in Austin? You're hanging out in the wrong section of town, but I understand.

Posted by: tommy harper on July 18, 2008 at 8:56 PM | PERMALINK

Monsieur Norton, c'est magnfique!

Je vais prendre ma machine à remonter le temps et revenir à mon laboratoire.

Rumor has it that Inkblot and Domino were seen at a McCain fundraiser tonight.

Posted by: Michael7843853 on July 19, 2008 at 12:20 AM | PERMALINK

It's 'gnashing'. Silent g. Like 'gnats'.

Not sure why you folks seem to think Austin is BBQ world. Austin ain't Fort Worth, ya'll.

Migas and tamales maybe. Go down fine with a Shiner.

As the slogan of a fine and funky Austin restaurant runs:

"Don't mess with Tex-Mex."

Posted by: MsNThrope on July 19, 2008 at 10:52 AM | PERMALINK

Surely you mean mewling and rending of couch upholstery...

Posted by: hw on July 19, 2008 at 1:26 PM | PERMALINK

Kudos to Quaker in a Basement for characterizing a lack of foresight and planning as practically "Rumsfeldian."
