FRIDAY CATBLOGGING....Last week someone commented on the undeniable beautyosity of Domino's thick white whiskers, so this week is whisker week for everyone. Obviously Inkblot has trouble with this photographic category since his whiskers sort of blend into his face, but they're still perfectly respectable specimens. Domino, however, is clearly the star of the show.

As always, beautiful pictures of beautiful cats.

Anyone interested in pets and politics should check out www.thedogvote.com. Not only can pets virtually "vote" for their chosen political candidate, but they are also able to purchase a political pet bandana to show off their choice with pride!!

Ahhhhhhh, my weekly fix.

I was a bit perplexed when you said last week the Domino's fur was white with black tips. Never noticed that in the previous photos. But it sure shows today. Interesting.

Posted by: optical weenie on August 15, 2008 at 3:25 PM | PERMALINK

Hey, you changed Domino's picture. Trying to pull a fast one Kevin?

Posted by: optical weenie on August 15, 2008 at 3:33 PM | PERMALINK

Yeah, I was playing with the photos. It's back to the original one now.

Posted by: Kevin Drum on August 15, 2008 at 3:34 PM | PERMALINK

mmmmmmmwhiskers.

Posted by: shortstop on August 15, 2008 at 3:36 PM | PERMALINK

Well her set of whiskers is much more impressive in this picture. Sort of looks like she has a bowtie on.

Posted by: optical weenie on August 15, 2008 at 3:37 PM | PERMALINK

Those are keepers.

Someday, when Inkblot's picture is on folding money, they'll want to use that one. Serene and majestic.

Domino looks disturbed, though. What is she looking at?

Both of these cats could be saying:

"All right, Mr. DeMille, I'm ready for my close-up."

Posted by: ET on August 15, 2008 at 3:44 PM | PERMALINK

I liked the second picture of the minion. Her face looks a little kerschlumpy and jowly in this one. And the whiskers a tad bedraggled.

I vote photo #2 and INKBLOT for PRESIDENT.

Posted by: optical weenie on August 15, 2008 at 3:45 PM | PERMALINK

Not only do the photos highlight the both cats' whiskers, but they make them look thinner, too.

Posted by: Brian on August 15, 2008 at 4:12 PM | PERMALINK

Ah, finally, it's Friday and our moment of cat zen. Great close ups!

"they make them look thinner, too."

Wait. The whiskers look thinner?

Posted by: Linkmeister on August 15, 2008 at 4:26 PM | PERMALINK

Gotta disagree, Kevin. Domino looks like you scared the bejeezus out of her, but Inkblot looks like a silent-movie star in profile. This shot does show off Domino's black-tipped white fur, though.

Posted by: sullijan on August 15, 2008 at 4:32 PM | PERMALINK

Well, I think Domino got distracted by a passing bird as I was shooting this picture. Needless to say, looking skyward is about all she did about it.

But that was the picture that seemed to show off her whiskers the best, so that's the one that went up.

My grandmother always referred to my beard as whiskers.

Life as Friday feline celebrities must be nice...but it's just plain hard for the rest of us.

Posted by: Varecia on August 15, 2008 at 4:47 PM | PERMALINK

No mistake. Those whiskers are Nordic!

Posted by: alibubba on August 15, 2008 at 4:59 PM | PERMALINK

Yeah, definitely beautiful Viking whiskers.

Kevin, you should have a reader pet blogging day where you post photos of readers' kitties, doggies, birds, bunnies, hamsters, iguanas, etc. Everyone follows your pets with interest, and I'd be intrigued to see other people's beloved animals. Kind of a lot of work for you, but you'd only have to do it once...

My kitty, Maxie, is black with beautiful white whiskers. His face reminds of the tee shirt with the big cat face on it that you see in catalogs.

He and my 17-yr. old daughter are best buddies. She went away to school for a month, and the poor cat missed her so much. He wandered around the house howling for her, and became so clingy and often begged to be picked up and cuddled, which he rarely did before she left.

My daughter's home now, and the cat's happy!

Ahhhhhh. . . much better.

Catistics, not statistics.

As Inkblot has his own well-deserved fan base of devoted aficionados, I shall heap praise on Domino, the Cleopatra of the Drum Clan. She is beautiful.

Great pictures!

Shortstop:

Can Cheney post a pic of his bat? The one with the roach on its ear?

When I was a wee lad, my mother told me that cat used their whiskers to measure if a place was safe to go into. (I think I had just given ours a "shave" with my little plastic safety scissors and she was telling me why I should never do that again). If their whiskers brushed up against something, they knew the opening was to narrow. I'm just wondering it that's actually true or just another New England wive's tale. Especially since I've had cats get their heads stuck in everything from tin cans to flower vases, and I've seen them jam themselves into the damndest places.

I think the texture of the cat fur around where the whiskers exit is interesting. It reminds me of the surface texture of a circus peanut.

Domino is indeed the star of the show. I love me some white whiskers on black cats! Thank you so much, Kevin!

I like their eyes in these pictures. Domino's eyes look fierce and challenging, while Inkblot's look penetrating as though she is carefully analyzing something in the distance.

hey kevin,

i think tht i've suggested this before, but it obviously hasn't happened yet...

here's my idea: why don't you make the catblogging pix into links to LARGER versions?

this would be a good trick for other posts, like charts or whatever.

it's common an many blogs. why aren't you HIP2IT yet?

LOL

thanx for your catblogging and your other blog job, too!

The wonder of devoted pets...(I've had cats that were devoted in their OWN WAY)...right now one and a half pounds of YORKIE pup is curled up between my feet as I type...something I've missed since our ten year old died in 2007...despite the sleep deprivation of having a puppy who MUST get out of his cage in the middle of the night for duties and attention...he is a JOY! We do miss having a cat around the place though...PETS start the day in a happy way...

Collection of flowers.

The right rose
appears in my mind,
and everywhere
shines when the
soft wind remains
in the light of
a flower; the cold
leaf is dead
and here there's
a shadow, the
delicate dark and
a loving profile.
