HAPPY TO BE HERE....Hi, I'm Troy McClure Steve Benen. You may remember me from such blogs as The Carpetbagger Report, Salon.com's Blog Report, Crooks & Liars, and Talking Points Memo.

I couldn't be more excited about the chance to take over for Kevin Drum -- I was going to say, "replace," but we know Kevin is irreplaceable -- here at Political Animal. Not only have I been a loyal subscriber to the Washington Monthly for years, but Kevin is one of the reasons I started blogging in the first place in early 2003. My most sincere thanks to Paul Glastris and the rest of the team for this opportunity.

My posting schedule is going to be a bit different from Kevin's, by virtue of the fact that I'm on the east coast and like to get started bright and early. And I should also mention that I'm bringing along my commenters from The Carpetbagger Report. They're a spirited bunch, but I'm confident the two sets of regulars will get along just fine.

It's truly an honor to be here, and by the looks of things, I'm getting started at a very exciting time in the political world. Thanks for the warm welcome.

And now, back to the news....

Cheers Steve! Like the new digs.

Now, where can I put all my stuff? I got ... 10,000 of sarcasm, five tonnes of anti-Republican rants, 20 reams of silly jokes and puns ... Oh, I'll just shove it over behind your reasoned discourse.

very excited to be one of the many to follow you here... you have been my one and only blog addiction, and its a sad thing that I continue to be proud of this addiction. My thanks to you for continued sacrifice and hardwork. it is the people who can create stories that shape our countries intellectual future... and you are clearly one of those people. Enjoy! We will be here watching.

I followed you here, and here you came up with a Simpsons reference on your first post. A great start.

Keep up the good work.

Hey, Steve. Welcome to the Political Animal.

You are not allowed to begin blogging until you successfully answer one question:

How many houses do you own?

Posted by: POed Lib on August 22, 2008 at 8:08 AM | PERMALINK

Welcome, Steve. Couple of office rules for you:

1] You kill the joe, you brew some mo'.

2] Timesheets are due at 10 AM or your paycheck gets held until 3 PM on Friday.

3] Don't ask about a four-day workweek.

4] If you must listen to music in your cubicle, keep it on Lite95.

5] No personal e-mails or phone calls.

6] Work starts at 8:00. Not 8:01.

7] Do not eat anything from Brenda's corner of the fridge.

8] Kahkis and slacks are fine for Friday. But please, no blue jeans.

9] Your mother doesn't work here. Clean up after yourself.

10] Please keep use of the Internet to an absolute minimum or we will have no choice but to turn it off.

Thank you. Have a nice day.

The Mgmt.

Hi Steve,

That was the best opening line I could have imagined! :-) Good to see you in your new home. I also look forward to seeing hilzoy make an appearance.

Classy place.

Now I'm off to see what Kevin is up to.

Posted by: wvng on August 22, 2008 at 8:16 AM | PERMALINK

Yay! Love yer stuff, and it'll be nice to get you and Hilzoy in one place. Now, if you'd only do a Doctor Who segment on Poli-Sci Fi Radio... :)

Posted by: Anna Granfors on August 22, 2008 at 8:19 AM | PERMALINK

I'm here, boss---and for the individual who wants to keep it on Lite95, you should know that I alternate between classical/folk (WKSU 89.7; you can get live feeds via www.wksu.org ) and my "other" classical collection (reaches for the ZZTop supply).

Oh---and I left that really big pile of mauled, mangled, and slain Bushylvanians back at the other site. You don't think Morbo will mind, do you?

Posted by: Steve on August 22, 2008 at 8:25 AM | PERMALINK

Congrats on the new gig Steve. I already miss Carpetbagger (the first political blog I stumbled upon, and the one I was most loyal about reading), but with you over here, I guess the withdrawl symptoms won't be too bad.

Blog long and prosper.

Hey, Steve (and everyone!)! Nice new digs. Welcome home!

I like the new place, but it is a bit tough on mobile devices, and since I travel (one might say WAY too much) that's kind of important. Maybe once you get settled in your new peeps might give a thought or two to poor schmoes like me.

Can't wait for your first posts!!!

I think there's a tendency to think everyone knows you and your work and where you're coming from, but you should consider an intro post, "Where I'm coming from," that would tell us how you got here, why you are a political blogger, where you're coming politically speaking and in your style of commentary. Just a suggestion. Mainly I wanted to say: good luck.

Well, I managed to find it, Steve. No, I didn't get lost. I just live in Idaho, a two hour time difference. No, I'm not the only progressive here, but pretty damn near.

I must suggest to the management that I agree with zeitgeist about the comments. Carpetbagger format is easier and looks better, and comments should be numbered for reference. Posts, too, if you really want to get sophisticated, so we can say, "As so-and-so said on #5-23, 'blah blah blah . . . '"

Can they be ordered newest to oldest, also? That saves a lot of scrolling. Is there an option? I don't see it. And how about posting the commenter's id at the beginning?

Do you have a 90 hour, seven day work week here?

Posted by: hark on August 22, 2008 at 10:46 AM | PERMALINK

I'm happy to follow Steve (affectionately, CB) to the Washington Monthly. I'm confident that WM regulars who are just being introduced to CB will quickly find that this guy's stuff is ESSENTIAL reading. That CB's work will now be available to a wider audience helps us all.

Some CB transfers' definition of "troll":

Anyone not in lockstep with the prevailing lefty-blog, progressiver-than-thou group-squeak or one who espouses a "reasonable people may differ" point of view in an equally strong manner as their particular, unassailable point of view.

In other words, any longtime Clinton supporter (read older person), or independent thinker will at some point be called "a troll" by certain CB regulars - just like you're already used to, I'm sure.

We're all used to it, so feel free to join in the fun (think Maoist posters featuring rows of shadowy faces in jaw-jutting profile - then begin). There, now isn't that fun?

We still post here and take their ill-mannered, ill-thought-out abuse, because we feel it is important to the greater cause of promoting freedom of thought. No, there is no "freedom from feeling offended."

I'd go on, but I have to run to Democratic Party headquarters here in Bedford, Lawrence County, Indiana, and get prepared for Obama's announcement (along with the other regular Democrats working for Obama's election, nearly all of them - like me - Clinton voters in the primary).

Makes me want to work even harder out here in the reddest part of this economically-devastated red-state to put another fine Democrat like Senator Obama back in charge of the executive branch.

A "Troll"

Late to the conversation, but I'm eager to extend my congratulations & a great big welcome to you, Steve. WM made an excellent choice. I look forward to struggling to keep up with your prolificity.

Hi, too, to all you Carpetbaggers. As for the inevitable CB trolls, I guess the preferred nomenclature is Carpetstainers.

Posted by: junebug on August 22, 2008 at 1:30 PM | PERMALINK

Hey Rielle Lovechild/troll (if you're really "on our side" then no need to rub that in, true?), the partisan definition of "troll" is relative anywhere ("but you knew that"), so your posturing pretensions that you can make a case on which side is referenced just shows how much actual trolling you indulge here. Actually, the best way to define a troll: someone who abuses facts and/or logic, and/or good standards of discourse and nettiquette. IOW, an articulate conservative arguing in good faith (oh come on, there are some out there, right?) would truly not be "a troll." I think though that the folks at places like redstate.com get after anyone who shows liberal tendencies.

Second, If you really care about electing a Democrat do you need to indulge in garment-rending distress over Hillary not winning the Primaries? I mean, do you think she was "owed" it, or what? And you know damn well the reason your area is "distressed" is because of the clowns in the White House, I sure hope you can fight hard to keep McShrub out of there, right?

Finally, I warn you and other trolls, "concern trolls" and near-trolls: the regulars around here have always been good at kicking the asses of trolls, and I suspect the tradition will continue under the new management.

Posted by: Neil B ☼ on August 22, 2008 at 1:43 PM | PERMALINK

doubtful at 12:20 - alas, Team Orange sounds like we're all from Kos.

i didn't get a chance to say it at the old place because IFP was ID'd while i was away on biz, but really it is just perfect that it was Maria. the sheer quality of the writing and cleverness of the satire should have been a dead giveaway, but i didn't realize our dear sweet Maria had all that pent up snark! :) Mary just brought out a whole 'nother side of the personality!

Posted by: zeitgeist on August 22, 2008 at 1:47 PM | PERMALINK

Neil B

If you're an example of how regulars around here kick what you call, troll, asses - I'm not impressed.

Let's start by you pointing out where I was "garment-rending" about Hillary losing the primaries. I reread what I wrote and I thought I made it clear that I'm fine with Obama. Like most Clinton supporters and longtime Democrats, I'm happy with the one my fellow Democrats chose. I still don't have to like him MORE than Clinton to be acceptable to you, do I? Does almost as much work for you?

It's 90-1 Clinton hate from progressiver-than-thous rather than the other way around. You can look it up. I pulled the statistic from the same place on my anatomy as where you apparently pull your "facts" from.

Posted by: Rielle Lovechild on August 22, 2008 at 1:53 PM | PERMALINK

Ahh...NOW it feels like home.

Thanks, RL, thanks Neil.

really it is just perfect that it was Maria. the sheer quality of the writing and cleverness of the satire should have been a dead giveaway, but i didn't realize our dear sweet Maria had all that pent up snark! :)

zeitgeist, thanks for the blush-inducing kind words, but didn't I engage in plenty of snark under my own--Maria's--name? I thought I had! Around here, a phrase like "dear sweet shortstop" would invoke mass snorts. Hadn't realized I was such a pussycat over at TCB, but perhaps I'll try to nurture that softer side.

Posted by: shortstop on August 22, 2008 at 2:27 PM | PERMALINK

Finally, I warn you and other trolls, "concern trolls" and near-trolls: the regulars around here have always been good at kicking the asses of trolls, and I suspect the tradition will continue under the new management.

Oh, Christ, Neil, do you ever stop embarrassing yourself?

I still think you're Swan, BTW.

(That softer side will have to wait.)

Posted by: shortstop on August 22, 2008 at 2:31 PM | PERMALINK

No shortstop, I am not Swan. I am still waiting for an explanation of why you think so, why you consider what I post to be "embarrassing myself." First, aside from whether RL was all that bad (no, see below), it is true we have a good troll-bashing tradition. Also, I don't usually rag on people other than definite enemy trolls. I realize now I was too hard on Rielle Lovechild: RL, your handle got me irritated since it looked gratuitous and your tone sounded too sarcastic and harsh against the "intolerance" (yes, there's some but not as bad as that) etc. I thought maybe you were either feigning (we do have those) or too bitter a Hillary supporter, and the latter was sort of read between the lines. OK, fine, you support Obama etc.; sorry I zinged off on you and we can all celebrate if and when Obama gets in. (And we all sure as hell will have to work it hard to make that happen.)

The other thing is, I have put forth good digs at conservative positions, made what looked to be cogent counterarguments (well, people at scholie type joints like Brad DeLong's have made complements) and don't express any clear conservative sympathies except a touch of pity for unborn fetuses and the idea of "God" etc. I try to put in some good links from time to time. I just don't get the negative buzz - I don't want to think RL was right about the crowd here! Heh, maybe I'm just "too into myself"? Sure, so what! - and uh oh, that's what "concern trolls" gripe about.

Neil B,

Don't sweat it. 'Rielle Lovechild' is still just sore from the drubbing I gave them a week ago when I wouldn't get on the 'catharsis' bandwagon.

Since I don't see any salient political purpose in introducing her name in nomination, I am therefore a 'Clinton hater.'

Funny that Lovechild accused me of demanding absolutely fealty to my point of view when my only sin was not worshiping at the temple of Clinton.

Way to ruin a perfectly good comment section with your passive aggressive dig on those Carpetbagglers who don't happen to agree with you, though. Classy.

[Apologies for the form not remembering the commenter information, but could you please try to remember to enter it? We have trolls who take advantage of that fact. Thanks, -Mod]

Nice to see your new home. I think I even like the purple background. Again--congratulations--and fabulous opening line.

-Mod,

I will do my best! :) TCR transplant still getting used to the new format (which is also my excuse for the double post, too).

Thanks!

Hey Steve,
Never commented but read Carpetbagger every day. I prefer the old font but will get used to this. Hope you'll still be doing Poli-Sci-Fi with Bill.

doubtful,

That was one of the shortest self-congratulatory, full-of-oneself posts I've ever seen from you.

Well done.
