POOR, POOR NRSC.... The Senate Democratic leadership is asking, "How close can we get to 60 seats?" The Senate Republican leadership is asking, "Why isn't anyone giving us money?" Subscription-only Roll Call reports today:
In a stunning admission, National Republican Senatorial Committee Chairman John Ensign (Nev.) on Friday morning blasted his GOP colleagues for not doing enough to help the committee financially, and he said he would have to scale back the NRSC's independent expenditure budget as a result. [...]
For months Ensign has pushed his colleagues to cough up more funding to help eat away at Democrats' money advantage, and has repeatedly complained that Republicans in the Senate have taken a dangerously nonchalant approach to the 2008 cycle.
It sounds they're not expecting to do particularly well. In a statement, Ensign announced, "...I have had no choice but to decrease the total budget of our [Independent Expenditure] Unit."
Ensign, as it turns out, has reason to be annoyed. Through June, Republican senators had contributed $1.1 million to the NRSC. On the other side of the aisle, Democratic senators had chipped in nearly quintuple that number. All told, as of Aug. 1, the DSCC had nearly $43 million in the bank, while the NRSC's cash on hand totaled $25.4 million.
No wonder Ensign is taking the unusual step of chastising his Republican colleagues in a press release -- his party is poised to have a very bad cycle, and he's not anxious to shoulder the blame.
Noting the development, Kevin asks, "I wonder why no one wants to give Republicans any money this year?" I'm sure, if we put our minds to it, we could come up with a few reasons....

As I posted at Kevin's...
Careful with those numbers. Excluding individual candidates, the totals for the various party committees and affiliates show Republicans outraising Democrats. The Democratic Congressional and Senatorial committees well ahead of their Republican counterparts. However, at the national level, the Republicans are well ahead of their Democratic counterparts.

pretty easy to see why the left has more money to give, its all the graft, corruption, payolla, fringe, porkbarrell pay outs they have to work with. Hell this is a no brainer.. I thought you clowns could come up with this on your own..

And yet, we will still be shocked when McCain wins By That Much.

There's talk of another round of the excellent use it or lose it campaigns, where we ask Dems in safe seats to donate to put the screws to the GOP.
I refuse to participate in the Google-bombing campaigns (I feel they are against the spirit of the Tube Internets) but Use-it or Lose-it is a great idea.

This makes perfect sense. The Republicans are privatizing much of their campaign efforts. Its going to be interesting to see how this strategy plays nationally.

We've seen how this strategy works. In 2000 and 2004.

From what I gather, lots of conservative types now prefer the "alternative/originalist conservative/libertarian" crowd (American Conservative, Reason, Ron Paul etc.) to the Repug/neocon party machine. The latter are better people and this breaks up the opposition too.

The Republican't senators whose seats are up in 2010 and 2012 don't really see much point in giving money to members who will be gone come January 2009. They need to save it for themselves.

I think a better question would be, "Why don't Republican Senators want to give their own campaign machine any money?" I guess we now know how folks on the Titanic felt---about fifteen minutes after the last lifeboat left....

"Why isn't anyone giving us money?"
Um.
1. Because you suck.
2. Because the citizens who might have given you money don't have any money to spare (see #1).
3. Because all your pals in big business know you're deader than three day old road kill.
4. Because all your pals in #3 don't have any money because you let them do whatever the fuck they wanted for eight years and now they're facing a shit ton of law suits (see #1).
Christ. The GOP is the equivalent of the fat sweaty guy with halitosis who can't understand why no one will dance with him.
So he goes to lurk in the toilet.
