MONDAY'S CAMPAIGN ROUND-UP....Today's installment of campaign-related news items that wouldn't generate a post of their own, but may be of interest to political observers:
* Clinton adviser Maggie Williams and Obama strategist Axelrod release a joint statement: "The fact is that our teams are working closely to ensure a successful convention and will continue to do so. Senator and President Clinton fully support the Obama/Biden ticket.... Anyone saying anything else doesn't know what they're talking about. Period."
* Hillary Clinton is expected to formally release her primary delegates at a reception on Wednesday.
* In a bit of a surprise, Ted Kennedy will speak tonight at the convention.
* Remember the fight over what to do with the Florida and Michigan convention delegations? It's all water under the bridge -- the credentials committee voted unanimously yesterday to restore full voting rights to both states' delegations.
* Former Rep. Jim Leach, an Iowa Republican, will speak to the Democratic convention tonight, and Fairbanks Mayor Jim Whitaker, an Alaska Republican, will do the same tomorrow.
* The latest CNN/Opinion Research poll shows Obama and McCain tied nationally at 47% each.
* The Hill reported, "AFL-CIO officials have kicked off their push to introduce Barack Obama to union voters in 24 'priority' states, unveiling a mail piece that will go out to more than a million swing voters in four states this week." Karen Ackerman, political director of the AFL-CIO, called it the "biggest grassroots effort in history."
* The RNC has established a "war room" in Denver, to attack Dems during their convention.
* The RNC also continues to utilize Hillary Clinton's attacks against Obama from the primary season.
* A Public Policy Polling poll shows Obama leading McCain in Virginia by two, 47% to 45%.
* A Suffolk University poll shows Obama leading McCain in Colorado by five, 44% to 39%.
* Rasmussen shows McCain leading Obama in Indiana by four, 46% to 42%.
* Rasmussen shows Obama leading McCain in California by 14, 51% to 37%.
* Rasmussen shows McCain leading Obama in Mississippi by 13, 54% to 41%.
* Mason-Dixon shows McCain leading Obama in Arizona by six, 47% to 41%.
* Mason-Dixon shows Obama leading McCain in Colorado by three, 46% to 43%.
* Mason-Dixon shows McCain leading Obama in New Mexico by four, 45% to 41%.
* Mason-Dixon shows McCain leading Obama in Nevada by seven, 46% to 39%.
* Mason-Dixon shows McCain leading Obama in Utah by 39, 62% to 23%.
* Mason-Dixon shows McCain leading Obama in Wyoming by 37, 62% to 25%.

'The RNC has established a "war room" in Denver, to attack Dems during their convention.'
well, of course they must attack Democrats. What else do they have to offer? Certainly not any proposals of substance.
What idiots they are. So sad that presidential elections have come down to the Democrats advancing specific policy proposals, and the Repugnicans just attacking mindlessly......

Question re: site
Can you make it so that after you click through "continue reading" you can move on to the next / previous post directly, without going back to the main page.
You know, like the old site...

Quit the "continue reading" already. It makes blogs a pain in the butt. Just put it on the page and if I don't want to read it, I'll scroll through.

So true. Sickeningly true. The Repugnant party leadership declares yet another 'war', on our own people. You don't declare war on fellow Americans. Isn't it an American virtue to fight fair, and may the best man win? In the America I grew up in it is. Not with the ReThugs, they want sleeze, smears, and 'war rooms'. Lying, cheating, stealing, torturing, spying, and election tampering are all on the table for them. And, unfortunately, their attacks are anything but mindless. They are calculated, premeditated, strategic attacks that come from a party desperate enough to do anything, hurt anyone, say anything that they think will make Dems/Obama look bad. Like an animal, backed onto a corner with nothing else to do or say, they attack, attack, attack! Like a school yard bully who is really scared of being humiliated, so he hurts and humiliates others as often as possible. The Repigs love to rip into others, while they enrich themselves, because they got nothing else. We need change in our leadership, and it can't happen too soon.

Just to be clear, there are two Rasmussen polls for Indiana, one showing McCain leading by 4, and the other showing McCain leading by 13?

Hi Steve,
Looks like there are two Indiana lines in the Rasmussen bullet points, & the second one links to Mississippi (which has its own line).

When Bill and Hillary speak at the convention they are going to have to do more than just come out in support for McCain, they are going to have to attack McCain as viciously as they can. My preferred message would be to state clearly and unequivocally that if McCain thinks he can drive a wedge between Democratic voters and win over Hillary voters who support positions diametrically opposed to what he stands for, he must be even more senile than he looks in his campaign appearances. So, maybe not remembering how many houses he has wasn't a sign of an elitist out of touch with the common man, but a sign of a senile old man with a failing memory. Not a nice thing to have to say about a person 72 years young, but do you want someone with a failing memory answering the phone at 3am?

First, using the 'below the fold bit' keeps the comments together with the posts. Until/unless the format gets fixed, I hope Steve does this on every post.
Live-blogging note: I just heard Warner saying he was not going to concentrate on Bush's mistakes, but on the 'plans for the future.' When Obama says that, I understand and agree, but not when the keynoter -- prompted by Chuck Todd, oap, to say the opposite -- says it.
In fact, the one elephant-sized issue that I've seen no one use is the incredible corruption of the Bush Administration, from the DoJ to the Housing Administration, to the way they ran 'faith-based -- non Christians need not apply -- funding' to the VA to the monstrousness of Haliburton/KBR.
Bush has been attacked on the war, on the economy, but SOMEBODY'S gotta start pointing out he's run the most corrupt Administration since Grant!

Hey Prup... most of us can't remember how corrupt the Grant administration was, maybe we should compare Bush to Nixon? :-)

Got it. Thanks for the heads-up.
Quit the "continue reading" already.
There's a lot of info in the campaign round-up, and I'm trying to make it easier for readers. I hope it's a pretty minor inconvenience.

HIRE TWO DECENT PEOPLE to run this country instead of the usual crooks and liars.
Posted by: Mike Meyer on August 25, 2008 at 1:02 PM | PERMALINK
Mike Meyer: riiiiight. And this means one less vote McCain has to counteract. Nice strategy though. Can't accuse you of being a McCain front, because no campaign that came up with the idiocy of publicly announcing they were giving gifts to trolls -- and thereby let us ignore ANY pro-McCain comment -- could think of something this smart.
Racer X: Even I am not old enough to remember the Grant Administration (though might have some stories about "Lemonade Lucy") but that was one story that even made it into grammar school textbooks. But I don't care if you compare Bush to Heliogabalus, USE THE CORRUPTION.

Be interesting to see how much press time the media gives to the Republican war room. My guess is that it will be out of proportion and beyond "fair and balanced". It is difficult for the media to cover this kind of crap without aping and taking on the Republican talking points as their own analysis.

Interesting poll numbers. The amount of McCain's lead in NM, tho within polling error, if it continues to track, isn't good for Obama.

If the right wingers want war in Denver, there are plenty of people around spoiling for that fight. Just ask this Fox News reporter - http://www.rockymountainnews.com/videos/detail/protesters-confront-fox-network/

Just have to mention this, meaningless to those who don't watch tv crime dramas and particularly Law&Order: Criminal Intent -- especially those who saw last night's Season Finale --
but did the McCain Campaign have to choose at its spokesman at the Democratic convention an attractive blonde named
Nicolle Wallace
(Most of you may miss it, but for those of you who share my love of the show, sorry about those ruined keyboards.)

I'll second treetop's suggestion on eliminating the "continue reading" link. Everything you do is good enough for the front page CB (or I guess now you are PA)!

Having Obama ahead in Colorado already has to be good news. I have to imagine that having the convention can only help stir up support for him, and it's going to be very tough for McCain to take the state.

Let's see a show of hands of how many 'believe' the Corporate created polls ? All of them are aimed at one thing: to manipulate public perception in order to benefit the Corporations themselves .. meaning McBush and his CORPORATE AGENDA.

May I comment on the "continue reading" below-the-fold issue?
We immigrants from The Carpetbagger Report have evolved an efficient method of "continuing reading", viewing comments AND maintaining the continuity undisturbed of the main page. It's very simple, especially if you use Mozilla Firefox or IE7 as your browser: You open the "continue reading" or comments to a neighboring tab (right click > context menu > Open Link in New Tab). If you have the Tab Mix Plus add-on installed in Firefox (you need to use the beta version for FF 3.0 - 3.x) you can organize and managed your tabs in every imaginable way.
Just a suggestion. Hope it helps.

I'm trying to imagine Jim Leach playing the complete Zell Miller role and challenging Chris Matthews to a duel after his speech. Probably the best we can hope for is an offer to take him outside and have a few stern works with him.
Of course, Leach still has long way to go to make up for the role he played in keeping the Whitewater/Madison S&L "scandal" alive in '93.
