TARGETING OBAMA'S HALF-BROTHER.... One need look no further than its party platform to know the Texas Republican Party is, shall we say, a little unusual idiosyncratic. This is, after all, the same party committed, in writing, to eliminating Social Security, church-state separation, lessons on modern biology, income taxes, the Federal Reserve, and the minimum wage.

This week, however, the Texas GOP has stopped looking for the invasion of black helicopters, and started going after Barack Obama's family. In a new "ad" -- I use the word loosely -- the state party argues that the presumptive Democratic nominee can't be trusted, because he has a half-brother who's poor. Seriously. The ad argues:

"Obama claims he's looking out our families in an economic downturn but ask yourself this: If Obama cares so much about your family, why doesn't he doesn't take care of his own family first? Barack Obama lives in this house [image of Obama's house], wants to live in this one [image of the White House], while his own brother lives in this one [image of Obama's half-brother standing in front of a shack in Kenya]."

The ad, not surprisingly, uses the half-brother's full name: George Hussein Onyango Obama.

On its face, this is pretty weak tea. For one thing, Obama has several half-siblings, and he's met George exactly once. Second, if neglect towards half-siblings is going to become a campaign issue, Texas Republicans have a very poor sense of timing.

But let's cut the nonsense -- the Texas Republican Party isn't concerned about George Obama. There's a transparent subtext, which, once again, hopes to characterize Barack Obama as foreign, different, and somehow less than American. Even by Republican standards, this is unusually cheap and ugly.

Stay classy, Texas GOP.

The HuffPo article you link to is satirical.

You do know that Borowitz writes parody, don't you ?

A few people have suggested that McCain adopt George. It might get his income above a dollar a month.

The Repiglican Party is simply EVIL. Sick , sick pigs , greedy, narcisstic, and the very party that has created 8 million more poor people in the last 8 years because of their stinking greed. So we end up with the ultimate elitist, McBush , who not only owns 8 houses, put of course made his own private lake to fish a the while wearing his 500 dollars shoes and eating his sprinkled donuts brought to him by the ASSOCIATED PRESS. What a bunch of filthy pigs ...

I don't know... Obama hasn't been helping himself. Halperin has a post up with an advanced copy of Obama's speech. Apparently, it starts:

"Excuse me while I whip this out..."

developing...

I'm sure the TXGOP will provide funds so George can immigrate to the U.S.

Yawn. If Obama sent George money we'd hear that he didn't care about Americans or someone would dig up a tenuous tie between him and some terrorist group. OMG! OBAMA SUPPORTS TERRISTS!

Plus, given the divorce rate among the Bible Belters, I'm not sure how the suggestion we're responsible for our half-siblings will fly.

p.s. I REALLY WISH THE COMMENTS HELD ON TO OUR PERSONAL INFO, HINT HINT.

I hope this means that Obama can go after McCain's son. Once that happens, this election will be over.

Not targeting the brother, but targeting the jackass absentee father of his who felt it was his duty to run around the world leaving fatherless children.

McCain should show his compassion by adopting poor George and buy him a half-million dollar condo in La Jolla overlooking the Pacific and a Park.

I am not surprised by the ad. I have heard Texans say that they don't trust a politician who won't "take care" of his own family presumably via some bribe or corruption. Never forget Texas is a whole different country.

I think I read that Obama has met his half brother twice. Once when the young man was 8 and a second time a couple of years ago. I don't thing there is any real connection between the two, but you would think the Kenyan government would find the guy a job. You never know, Obama is probably going to be elected President and if he is, giving his brother a job would be a smart move.

As to Cindy's half sisters, the article Steve linked might be satire, but it is undisputed that Cindy has gone out of her way to distance herself from both. She inherited damn near everything.

The Texas Republican Party is being unusually classy. We did not refer the 'His Arrogance' the Afrikan Muslim as a n*gg*r.

What I MEANT to write was...
Barack Obama is a shitfy, conniving backstabber who left his half-brother destitute for years. Typical uppity n****r, he gets somef'n for himself, leaves everybody else behind. But if Barack makes any sort of comment about John McCain's family, THEN THE GLOVES COME OFF!!!
I'm Mark Halperin and I approve this message.

You know if the GOP spent 1/10th of the time that they spend coming up with goofy ass stunts that demean the political process, on something like crafting actual policy, they might not be such a friggin' laughingstock in the eyes of the world.

I actually think this line of attack will at least partially backfire on the Repigs, because they all know that every black dude in Africa is a scammer, so Obama is being smart by not supporting his half brother George. (mind you I do not agree with this, but IMO it's going on in the minds of the racists infesting the GOP)

I'm sure if Obama sent his brother a check the GOP would say he only did it because of the presidential run. And who knows, maybe George hasn't ever asked for any money, some people like to fend for themselves, right GOopers?

I move that someone remove the useless RPI buttons if they're only going to sit there like Joe Lieberman in a Katrina hearing. I guess we of the orange expect better service than this, and while I'm at it I should add that the ability to use limited html formatting was also nice and is missed.

John McCain says he wants to take care of America's families. He's courting female voters who supported Hillary Clinton's bid for the White House. But John McCain used to be married to this woman and together they had these children [Shot of McPOW at home with Mrs. McPOW Mark I and 1st set of McPOW juniors].

Then his wife was severely injured in a car accident and he began an affair with a young heiress to an large American company ... [shot of Paris Hilton] no, not that one ... divorced his wife and married the heiress [second shot of Paris Hilton]. Cut that out!

Now John McCain lives with this woman and together they had these children [Shot of McPOW at home* with Mrs. McPOW Mark II and 2nd set of McPOW juniors].

John McCain. He could give a fuck about anyone who isn't John McCain.

*Maybe multiple shots in front of multiple homes.

ah - the point of raising the spectre of Obama's brother is not Obama, it's his father, and by extension black fathers in general. I personally believe issues of race favor Obama more than they hurt him - I basically agree with Geraldine, that Obama doesn't have the skills or experience required to be president, especially at this precarious time, but his being black soothes a liberal angst looking for balm - but if the GOP can suggest Obama's father was just another black guy running around fathering children that grow up in poverty, well that;s sauce for the goose, yes?

Unfortunately, this line of attack will probably work. The corporate media will repeat and amplify any and all smears and attacks from the McSame campaign and rethugnicans.

Remember: The Low Information Voter is the core of republican votes and the LIV does not like nuance and details. That is why 'cut taxes' works as a campaign theme for the repugs. Too much nuance for the LIV to know that rethugs don't mean their taxes. That is why 'fear' and 'we are bigger and badder' and 'Islamoterrorists' work as campaign themes for rethugs. Any nuance to that is just too confusing for the LIV. Interpretation of Republican-speak to English: Low Information Voter = Stupid White Trash.

John McCain said he was committed to Carol Shepp when he married her, but left her when a wealthy heiress whose family connections could better advance his political ambitions came along.

Now John McCain wants you to believe he is committed to your interests. But what will happen when wealthy lobbyists who can serve his personal ambitions come along?

Cry me a river, baby! My mother, an older, elegantish Southern lady with perfect manners and without a crass bone in her body, mused to me the other day, "Can you imagine having sex with John McCain? Ewww!" As this was one of the first times my mom had even acknowledged that people do the mystery dance, I choked on my pluot and had to be whacked on the back.

Posted by: shortstop on August 25, 2008 at 3:56 PM | PERMALINK

This is exactly why Halperin said what he did. Obama is opening the door far and wide to these sorts of attacks and he will be the loser when it's all said and done. Two or three of Cindy McCain's condos are for her relatives who need the assistance. What is Obama doing for his half-brother, who he thought enough of to mention in his memoirs?

Obama wants to start this fight on the American dream and the financial status of family members, fine and dandy, but expect heavy fire in return. How he can allow a half-brother to live that way will take some explaining. Obama's a rookie at this game. Bringing in Biden to bail him out makes him look even more likes a not ready for prime time player.

Ah, the old bullying abuser's "bitch, look what you're making me do!" self-justification. As if McCain and his Rovian minions were, gosh, just too polite to ever indulge in any kind of vicious baseless smears on their own, but you better watch out and not make them angry, because then who knows what might happen?

The Texas Republican party wants to do away with the Federal Reserve? Right on. Whoever snuck that into the party platform probably doesn't know how useful a tool the Fed has been for banks and financial institutions, which are typically controlled by Republican leaning execs.

But I'm not complaining. Scrap the Fed.
