AND SO IT BEGINS.... We've seen the McCain campaign, the RNC, and state Republican Parties take the campaign in some deeply offensive directions, but to get closer to actual swiftboating, we'd have to turn to the American Issues Project.

The other day, the independent Swift-Boating outfit American Issues Project vowed to plunk down a cool $2.8 million on a slimy and vicious ad tying Obama to former Weatherman Bill Ayers.

Such vows often can be mere bluster designed to get free media and gin up contributions. Not this time, however.

The FEC report from the group is in, and it confirms that the group did in fact plunk down the nearly $3 million to air the ad.

If you live in Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, or Virginia, you may have already seen it -- and if not, you probably will sometime soon.

And just as the Swiftboat gang from four years ago had tangential-but-meaningful ties to the Bush-Cheney campaign, the American Issues Project is led in part by Ed Failor Jr., who was a paid McCain campaign consultant last year.

The Obama campaign is reportedly taking this seriously -- an ad buy of this size in these states is impossible to ignore -- and has a response ad that has not yet been aired.

I'd just add that when Obama withdrew from the public-financing system, he and his campaign suggested it was a necessary step, in part to help combat the "independent" right-wing groups who would likely launch swiftboat-style attack ads. At the time, there were no such groups in place, and the media scoffed at the rationale.

The argument doesn't look nearly as baseless anymore.

Underground weathermen have an easy job.

I pray the demonstrators in Denver don't go the way of the SDS in 1968.

Tying Obama to Ayers and the Weathermen could inspire contributions to the Alliance and reach
the more formidable spending in 2004 ($60 million)

Three million will get them some cable and Indy stations, that's all.

I continue to be dismayed that there are no strong 527's supporting Obama. MoveOn.org has some value, but they are not slimey.

What is needed is slimey 527's on the dimocrat side to match the $ and ferocity of the rethug 527's. I would willingly contribute to such organizations if I saw that they were as mean-spirited and slimey as the rethugs.

Don't worry about hitting the hired help. The money is coming from Harold Simmons a Texas Billionaire who tied to Big Pharma. Any guess why Big Pharma wants McCain to win? Of course, they don't want health care reform. Go after Simmons. Make sure everybody knows he is involved. Make sure everybody knows this is a Big Pharma hit.

This is a pretty good posting by Ted. Do not usually get that intelligent postings by rethugnican trolls.

Semanticleo, I'm pretty sure I saw that ad during the 6 PM local news last night (Columbus). I've seen it 4-5 times in all.

I'm equally as irritated by the Obama campaign's refusal so far to rebut the repeated McCain ad charges that he's calling for higher taxes, given that there can be no more predictable charge to be made against a Democrat on any level.

We've been hijacked.

O cry me a river, ted. Get over it. YOU lost.

The response is always to hold up a mirror. Everything I have seen coming from McCain's campaign and his unaffiliated supporters is a projection of his own issues. Simply redirecting these attacks back to his similar behavior and associations is quite simple. Associations with corrupt business people may be reflected back to the Keating 5. Assaults on family values/half-brothers can be redirected back to McCain's own family associations and marital relationships. References to his former-POW status can be used to point out his support of the current returning veterans and the disregard of their mental/emotional injuries as non-combat caused. This list is endless and need not be fully shared here. I hope you get the idea. Attacks are almost always projections (I am not a licensed psychologist) of the attackers own internal, unaddressed issues. I trust that Obama has within his organization people who are wise enough to recognize the form of attacks being made and clever enough to formulate responses that are not defensive, but responsive.

John McCain has some serious mental and emotional issues that have not been addressed. He is not so much an evil, angry man as one who has not fully recognized his inner terror; and those around him have not been willing to suggest his getting some help.

We in the U.S. have a great opportunity to shift the conversation on how we are willing to be led. We must take responsibility for our choices, and not allow others who appear to have "the Power" to lead us astray.

I am committed to Oneness through Justice and Transformation.

Swiftboating by the Repugs was a given to any person with a brain and a clear mind. I think the title of the last post says it all about our national press.

Now where is my reward, McCain campaign?

@SadOldVet

Obama won't condone such a group but it is up to us, really, to put up the money and put something together. So who out there wants this project?

Posted by: amy on August 25, 2008 at 5:05 PM | PERMALINK

I think the response ad is a pretty good counter punch by the Obama campaign. The lack of 527 support was at Obama's request. It remains to be seen if it will be a mistake. But, it seems like the Obama campaign has plenty to work with without "swiftboat" style attacks on McCain.

The Hillaries are losing control outside the convention. PUMAs! Ladies my ass! I fully expect to see a few 80 year old lesbians decking out Obama supporters. Real class act there POO-MAs.

Posted by: MsMuddled on August 25, 2008 at 5:11 PM | PERMALINK

The ad has been airing frequently in Pittsburgh, on local broadcast newscasts and on cable stations, such as CNN. And as Ron said, there's a bottomless pit of money that the Rethuglican hate machine can draw from.

I think Hyde's point is correct, that Obama needs to counter the tax-hike canard. They can start with McCain's proposal to include as taxable income the cost of employer-sponsored group health care. That's a ten-year $3.6 trillion hit on the middle class, while the replacement $5,000 family tax credits will not cover the cost of getting insurance in the individual market, if pre-existing conditions don't make the cost astronomical.

Posted by: KevinMc on August 25, 2008 at 5:12 PM | PERMALINK

Why isn't the Obama campaign hammering the Keating 5 scandal? It's perfectly plausible to suggest that McCain only repented because he was caught.

Posted by: Aaron Baker on August 25, 2008 at 5:13 PM | PERMALINK

I think this time the people are really getting tired of the shit from the desperate Republicans. Seriously tired of it.

All Obama needs to do is point at it, and ask the voter if that's the kind of politics they want.

The more shit the creeps crank out the more it will get our side fired up to kill off the GOP once and for all.

The Swiftboaters are manna from heaven this time. Go ye and register new Democrats, and most of those new Democrats will keep burying the creeps for the rest of their lives.

A scatter-shot comment:
MsMuddled: Had my birth-mother lived, she'd have been a 90 year old lesbian, and she'd never have gone PUMA. (Nor would the two founders of the first gay rights group in America, who did live, and were honored by being the first gay couple married in California.)

AKLiberal: I don't think stopping swiftboating was a mistake, as you know from my many comments at the old orange home. Again, a major point of swiftboating is to draw replies, so that people in general are turned off politics and politicians because they 'all do it.'

Remember how easily Obama could have struck back at Hillary during the campaign on perfectly legitimate -- but personal -- points. But the thing is he really means what he says about politics being too important for this sort of game.

He attacks back, but always ties the attacks to issues, and always shows McCain as the one who is doing the lying. Again, it is political jiujitsu, and it is also an adaptation of MLK/Gandhian tactics (not 'non-violence' but 'truth-force').

And a final point on the media. Has anyone noticed how Steve Schmidt's attempt to pressure the head of (was it NBC News or NBC as a whole) has backfired. The next day they announce that Rachel has been hired. But more importantly, have you actually listened to Chris Matthews recently. He's been as hard on McCain -- no, let me put it better, he has been as positive towards Obama -- as has Keith or Rachel. I just heard him discuss Michelle Obama -- and particularly the 'soft racist' white's response to her, and it could have been a speech from the podium.

Okay, Steve, next let's get you to blast CNN.

Re: the Keating Five Corruption scandal ... Of course McCain repented because he was caught. This is why he turned into a so-called ethics reformer. McCain slithered away from the Keating Five Corruption scandal on a technicality related to the fact that he went from the House of Representatives to the Senate after he got caught. Cindy McCain and her dad made a bunch of money off of Charles Keating. That is why we need to see Cindy's tax returns and investments.

The "Steve" in the last line of my comment was Schmidt, not Benen, of course.

If Obama is a terrorist because he was acquainted with Ayers (Weather Underground from 40 years ago) then McCain is an Iranian spy for backing Ahmed Chalabi, the Iranian spy who tricked us into the Iraq War. Has McCain denounced and rejected Ahmed Chalabi?

Is the US propping up Saakashvili because he is so closely tied to John McCain?

It turns out Saakashvili is not so "pro-democracy" after all...

So far, no commentators seem to have connected some very questionable dots as regards the airing of these ads.

Reportedly one of the significant group of media outlets eagerly carrying this slime on their assigned public airwaves is....

Ta Da

Sinclair Broadcasting!

Anyone remember the "documentary" Sinclair was prepared to air attacking Kerry's war record.

Anyone remember a blond lobbyist named Vicki Iseman who had gotten so close to McCain that his staff was trying to keep the two apart for fear word might leak out that they were having an affair (she was traveling constantly with him even as she pressed for licensure help with the FCC for Sinclair properties which Sinclair subsequently got, even though some observers said McCain's contacts on behalf of Sinclair were not proper.)

But of course it would be scandalous to accuse the McSame campaign of working in cahoots with both Sinclair and the American Issues Project because he has pledged to run only a positive campaign and....by the way, he was a POW in case you forgot.

Posted by: dweb on August 25, 2008 at 11:46 PM | PERMALINK

Does Obama have a long working relationship if not personal relationship with an unrepentant terrorist or not. If he does these ads are not disingenuous they are true. If he does not then they can be discredited. Truth and associations matter and I want to know about questionable associations and actions for both candidates...(eg Keating 5 anyone?)

Posted by: AMW on August 26, 2008 at 8:38 AM | PERMALINK

Another reason Obama is the right man for POTUS. He has the wisedom to see evil before it even pops up.

Posted by: Jeff on August 26, 2008 at 10:29 AM | PERMALINK

So, what is the extent of the connection between Senator Obama and Mr. Ayers? I've read in different places that Mr. Ayers named Obama as Chairman of the Ayers-initiated school program and that Obama's entry into electoral politics essentially began at a fund-raiser in Ayers' home.

What's the real truth?
