GOP GRAMMATICAL RULES.... For quite some time now, Republicans have taken pleasure in calling the Democratic Party the "Democrat Party." Apparently, using poor grammar is entertaining to Republicans, and has been for years. In 1996, the GOP platform excised references to the "Democratic Party" altogether.

This year, at long last, there's a sense of progress.

For years now, the GOP has gone after "Democrat schemes," "Democrat presidents," "Democrat Congresses" -- all phrases from the 1996 Republican platform, repeated many times since. Twenty years earlier, Bob Dole famously declared that all wars of the 20th century were "Democrat wars."

On Tuesday, members of the Republican platform committee meeting in Minneapolis voted down a proposal to call the opposition the "Democrat Party" in the 2008 platform. Instead, they'll go with the proper Democratic Party.

"We probably should use what the actual name is," said Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour, the panel's chairman. "At least in writing."

Talk about your soft bigotry of low expectations. When Republicans decide to use proper grammar, and recognize the actual name of their rival, this is not only an unusual development, it comes as something of a relief to Democrats.

But notice that Barbour thinks Republicans should "probably" use Democrats' "actual name." I guess Dems are supposed to consider this a magnanimous gesture?

Hailey Barber, isn't he the former national chair the Republic party?

Posted by: mudwall jackson on August 27, 2008 at 1:34 PM | PERMALINK

Well they probably should since they certainly sound like idiots when they don't. I mean, they have enough problems with sounding stupid when their policy proposals come out of their mouths; using ungrammatical English only worsens the problem.

I on occasion take a page from Harry Truman's book and refer to them as Publicans, Knowing full well that history has been far kinder to Democrats than to Publicans. I'll restore their "Re" when they restore my "ic"

ooops

former national chair OF the Republic party

Posted by: mudwall jackson on August 27, 2008 at 1:37 PM | PERMALINK

What did Publicans ever do to get slimed like that?

Now that they've gone back to DemocratIC, everything about their platform is officially icky.

Posted by: sullijan on August 27, 2008 at 1:39 PM | PERMALINK

Wow, how generous of them! Well, if they're considering to "maybe" call it a Democratic Party, I would consider to "maybe" not think that all Republicans are morons. Maybe. No promises.

Posted by: FreeProton on August 27, 2008 at 1:41 PM | PERMALINK

I disapprove of this change. It's good sport to out fake "lifelong Democrats" who say "Democrat party/president/candidate" on liberal blogs. Laughing at their slack-jawed confusion when you explain the difference between a noun and an adjective is one of life's simple pleasures.

Posted by: shortstop on August 27, 2008 at 1:42 PM | PERMALINK

I guess I'll stop referring to them as the Publican Party, then. At least in writing.

Posted by: colin on August 27, 2008 at 1:44 PM | PERMALINK

Does this mean we should stop pronouncing the House Minority Leader's name as BONE-er?

It did seem too compimentary to that flaccid delegation.

This whole issue must appear really petty to non-politics geeks.

Yeah, it was mildly interesting that the Scumbucket Party has such contempt for its opponents as to misuse their name -- the first time I read it! (And I follow this stuff more than 95% of the populace.)

Posted by: Equal Opportunity Cynic on August 27, 2008 at 1:48 PM | PERMALINK

Why don't democrats call them "repuglicans"? It's certainly more descriptive of their policies.

Posted by: Tom in Tejas on August 27, 2008 at 1:56 PM | PERMALINK

Given this administration's recent "undemocratic" actions, and Barbour's steadfast belief in them, deep down he probably thinks using "democratic" is more of a put down than using "democrat."

Posted by: Econobuzz on August 27, 2008 at 1:57 PM | PERMALINK

bluegal, I will not touch your 'ic' comment. Wouldn't be prudent, not at this juncture. :)

I vote for The Prepubican Party myself.

I prefer the repugnacan party.

I still don't trust the Repugnant Party.

Posted by: beep52 on August 27, 2008 at 2:02 PM | PERMALINK

Well, as someone once said, "Democrat party" rolls right off the tongue in the same way "Jew banker" used to.

Just a little Haley Barbour trivia; one of the 25 founders of PNAC (Project for the New America Century) that brought us the Bush/Cheney Doctrine of Preventive War!

This is called sucking up to power. The writing is on the wall - The Rethugs are going to have a miserable time in the minority if they continue to be the pricks they have become over the last few decades.

So can someone fill me in on the background to this thing?

Why did they start calling it the Democrat Party? If it's supposed to be insulting (by intentionally botching the name) well I really don't see it.

what is the deal with Democrat Party??

Posted by: neilt on August 27, 2008 at 2:05 PM | PERMALINK

The grammar's all right. It's okay in English to use a noun as an adjectival modifier of another noun. It's incorrect because "Democrat Party" is not their name.

Posted by: Matthew B. on August 27, 2008 at 2:05 PM | PERMALINK

I've taken to calling them Redumblicans

Posted by: Pat on August 27, 2008 at 2:06 PM | PERMALINK

It's my understanding that they believe calling it the DemocRAT party subliminally emphasizes rat to people who are listeining to their drivel.

Posted by: Winkandanod on August 27, 2008 at 2:11 PM | PERMALINK

You donkeys lose this year and people will soon be calling youse the dinosaur party. Youse all f***ing stink.
At least the Freeping Goopers are more honest about their terminal corruption. Youse suck - go die.

Speaking of grammar, is anyone else sick of these policial commentators whose first word in answering a question put to them is the very dismissive: "Look...." I view that word as a loaded one and patronizing at that. Like "look you moron, I'll go slow so you can follow...." And it is a bipartisan problem. It seems to be prevalent. [sigh] Maybe I'm just being a word prig....

Posted by: Walt on August 27, 2008 at 2:16 PM | PERMALINK

If they want to leave a syllable out of our name, we can just return the favor, but we get to choose which syllable. I choose Replicant, because they're only simulated humans.

And being a generous soul, I give them back a letter. Not one of their original letters, but hey, since when is there anything original about Replicants?

Posted by: Cap'n Chucky on August 27, 2008 at 2:21 PM | PERMALINK

I vote to remove the letters R-E-L-A-N from the Republican party giving us the

PUBIC Party.

Sorry could not resist.

Slavish tit-for-tat would suggest "Rebpublan", dropping the "ic", and lowering the syllable count from 4 to 3.

For those curious, the choice to intentionally be incorrect was made so that it would be easier to have that whole democRAT thing going. Their idea, childish as it may seem, was to hope that voters would focus on the last syllable, and associate democrats with rats. In short, it was playground stupidity, enacted by supposedly educated people, who were, at least hypothetically, in the service of their constituents.

Posted by: Diogenes on August 27, 2008 at 2:30 PM | PERMALINK

Joe D.: Doesn't work. Replicants are anti-pubic. Except when it comes to diddling folks they say shouldn't be diddled.

It's not just politicians. I've occasionally heard NPR hosts swallow the last syllable of Democratic, also. Makes me mad enough to spit.

NPR ain't what it used to be.

Actually the 'Democrat Party' usage -- like a lot of other Republican usages, dates back to Joe McCarthy and his followers. (The same language games resulted in the Cincinatti REDS being called the Redlegs for a few, sad years.)

lest anyone have forgotten, the R's actually used the DemocRAT bit in a TV spot against Kerry that was generally considered by reviewers to be an effort at subliminal advertising: it flashed RATS on the screen in the background. yes, they are that childish.

that said, i call them the Republican'ts, because they can't do anything good for the country.

Posted by: zeitgeist on August 27, 2008 at 3:00 PM | PERMALINK

Then, I think we should use the official name of the Republican Party - the American Fascism Party.

Posted by: The Conservative Deflator on August 27, 2008 at 3:06 PM | PERMALINK

I guess now Democrats should agree not to refer to the GOP as the Publican Party.

Posted by: RW on August 27, 2008 at 3:41 PM | PERMALINK

I think dropping the re from republican is an excellent idea. Read Mark 2: 13-17 where publicans are lumped together with sinners and tax collectors. Verse 15 in particular: And it came to pass, that, as Jesus sat at meat in his house, many publicans and sinners also sat together with Jesus and his diciples...

Steve, I think he's hoping they do because he's no dummy, and can see that the GOPers are going to be the minority party for a long, long time. There are a hell of a lot of Americans with one house or fewer who are waking up to the fact that voting Republican't is voting against their own self-interest.

I heard two Hillary supporters interviewed, and one of them said "Democrat party." They did, however, voice support for Obama. Wasn't sure what to make of that. Perhaps they simply live in a Republican enclave or something?

Posted by: Lynn Dee on August 27, 2008 at 4:25 PM | PERMALINK

We should just make sure every Democrat interviewed calls the opposition the "Republicant Party." Because they can't govern, can't fight wars, can't find Bin Laden, can't fix healthcare, they can't do anything right. They are, in a word, the Republicants.

We should stop whining and start winning.

Posted by: on August 27, 2008 at 4:39 PM | PERMALINK

Chill!

We're talking Haley Barbour and the Repelicans, here. To consider -- probably -- using the correct name of the opposing party, is the Voice of Reason and a triumph of bipartisanship.

You also see dittoheads and paleocons bloviating about how the USA is "a republic, and not a democracy" - well it is a republic, but a democracy also since the latter does not have to mean a direct popular democracy (all those "democratic countries" in the world, really aren't? - huh?) The whole point is the subliminal reminder about the two parties.

Posted by: Neil B on August 27, 2008 at 5:01 PM | PERMALINK

Oh, the Repubs like "Democrat" because "Democratic" is too positive sounding from civics lesson etc. about democracy, despite the cognitive dissonance per what I just referenced.

Posted by: Neil B on August 27, 2008 at 5:03 PM | PERMALINK

Using proper grammar is an elitist effort.

Only latte-sipping, hybrid-driving, arugula-eating liberals (like me) would use proper grammar.

Posted by: springfielder on August 27, 2008 at 5:18 PM | PERMALINK

As zeitgeist has alluded to above, the insult value (dubious, I know) in referring to their opponents as "the Democrat party" lies in its ending with the word, "rat".

The whole thing is just childish, but there seems to be an element of society that revels in childish things. In a sensible world - in fact, in the world America fancies itself to be living in - the corporate world would stand on the merits of the products or services it provides. Media outlets with punchy slogans like, "We report - you decide" would do just that; report events as they happened and allow you to draw your own conclusions. In a world like that, the Republicans would never have amassed such power.

However, the world is the way it is. Broadcasters perceive that the Republicans will allow them to exercise even greater control over shaping the media message, and it's a lot more fun to get powerful while getting richer and spreading your influence. The corporate world prefers to grease palms and pursue backroom deals rather than compete. This is not to suggest it would be impossible to find a corrupt Democrat - but the evidence of the past 8 years certainly supports awarding the "Party of Corruption" title to the Republicans.

It's quite simple. Organized America wants John McCain for president, in spite of - or perhaps because of - his faults. Some will acknowledge their bias, some will not. The time when a candidate could offer himself or herself; unvarnished, warts and all, and sell themself as the best choice, is gone forever. The only way to do it now is to make your opponent look worse, whatever it takes - lying, cheating, jamming their phone systems or tampering with machines that Americans believe honestly record their votes.

Beyond sad.

I occasionally edit the letters to the editor section of my daily newspaper, and our policy is whenever we get a letter with a reference to "Democrat Party" (usually from a county Republican official), we change it to the proper "Democratic" reference. No one plays silly games like that in our paper.

I think dropping the re from republican is an excellent idea. Read Mark 2: 13-17 where publicans are lumped together with sinners and tax collectors.

Sorry, but I then think of the old parable of the Pharisee and the publican, where the latter was the good guy.

Posted by: Vincent on August 27, 2008 at 10:04 PM | PERMALINK

Talk about your soft bigotry of low expectations.

It's all I would ever expect of the Republic Party.

Posted by: GuyFromOhio on August 27, 2008 at 10:49 PM | PERMALINK

I'm not particularly relieved.

When GOP standards refer to my party as teh Democrat party, I suspect it makes them sound like Dubya being unable to pronounce "nuclear" or other yokels that get videos from their local "liberry" (the patrons that get books out know to add one more "r" in there.)

When a supposedly knowledgeable person calls my party the Democrat Party, I think it dings their credibility as policy experts and, generally speaking, that tends to be beneficial to our country.

As a side note, this doesn't strike me as a grammar issue. It is a malapropism. Completely different sign of ignorance. Equally sad, but different.

@GuyFromOhio

I feel for them a little. THEY have the same word for both their party and their people. Keeping track of TWO names is more intellectual burden than many of them can seem to manage. I'm merely surprised that those unable to cope get as high up in the organization as they do.
