The key word to use, I think, is "panic". McCain is prone to fits of panic when scary things happen in the world. Words like "hotheaded", "temper", and "angry" really just make him sound like a tough SOB.

In contrast, "panic" sends the message that he's weak and foolish.

The only people who might be influenced by an emphasis on McCain's hot temper and bad judgment will be that proportion of the electorate who are really slow learners. One of the survivalist obsessions in the 80s was what regions of the country are most unlikely to be hit by fallout based on wind-direction historical records. Extreme Northern California/Southern Oregon was one such region.

You can get a lot of mileage if you can create a grand unified theory of what's wrong with your opponent, where everything all fits into a character trait that can be summed up with one word. This "hot-headed" thing could be it. For example, as another problem, you mention he's an angry candidate running a desperately negative campaign. That sounds a lot like hot-headed to me, and if you can use every attack he launches as further evidence of his temper, well that makes things difficult for him, doesn't it? Much as the well delivered speech before a wild crowd we can expect from Obama will be used to further the celebrity line, what if we had this hot-head line in place and used every attack by McCain to further it? It helps that it is very close to exactly what is wrong with his foreign policy. I mean, in the face of the Georgia situation he couldn't even show as much caution as the Bush administration. Maybe we can work some of those other criticisms into this frame too. Is he a flip-flopper, or is his opinion unstable? Kind of a stretch, but brings up a real issue with McCain while reminding voters of another one. I can understand why they're going for the rich, out-of-touch line for now, the gaffe was handed to them and it helps point out the absurdity of the celebrity line, but they won't be able to milk it for very long, and being Dems they probably wouldn't anyway.

Actually I'm surprised it's even. A black man running against a former POW? And there's probably something to the suggestion that polling this early is meaningless; there's always some defining watershed moment closer to the election, when all the gravel starts to slide to one side of the wagon-bed or the other. We need to get our own email campaign going, based on the truth about John McCain. Absolutely no lies, out of contexts or exagerrations like the other side is doing to Barack, because not only is truth is scarier than fiction, but we should pride ourselves on running a clean campaign.

Ideally these emails should start spreading around right after the Repub convention. This temper thing is definitely an issue that voters need to know about (esp. in contrast to Obama, who is thoughtful, measured, keeps his cool, just the qualities you want in a president).

Senator John McCain was one of the KEATING FIVE, five U.S. Senators investigated on ethics charges for strenuously helping convicted racketeer Charles Keating after he gave them large campaign contributions and vacation trips. The KEATING FIVE were accused of corruption in 1989, igniting a major political scandal as part of the U.S. Savings and Loan crisis of the late 1980s and early 1990s. The five senators, Alan Cranston (D-CA), Dennis DeConcini (D-AZ), John Glenn (D-OH), John McCain (R-AZ), and Donald W. Riegle (D-MI), were accused of improperly aiding Charles H. Keating, Jr., chairman of the failed Lincoln Savings and Loan Association, which was the target of an investigation by the Federal Home Loan Bank Board (FHLBB).

CHARLES KEATING WAS CONVICTED OF RACKETEERING AND FRAUD IN BOTH STATE AND FEDERAL COURT AFTER HIS LINCOLN SAVINGS & LOAN COLLAPSED, COSTING U.S. TAXPAYERS $3.4 BILLION. The U.S. Savings and Loan crisis of the late 1980s and early 1990s was the failure of 747 savings and loan associations (S&Ls) in the United States. The ULTIMATE COST OF THE U.S. SAVINGS AND LOAN CRISIS IS ESTIMATED TO HAVE TOTALED AROUND $160.1 BILLION, ABOUT $124.6 BILLION OF WHICH WAS DIRECTLY PAID FOR BY THE U.S. TAXPAYER.

Though not convicted of anything, Senator John McCain intervened on behalf of Charles Keating after Keating gave McCain at least $112,00 in contributions. In the mid-1980s, McCain made at least 9 trips on Keating's airplanes, and 3 of those were to Keating's luxurious retreat in the Bahamas. McCain's wife and father-in-law also were the largest investors (at $350,000) in a Keating shopping center; the Phoenix New Times called it a "sweetheart deal."

After four abysmal academic years at Annapolis distinguished only by his misdeeds and malfeasance, no one with a record resembling John McCain's would have been offered such a prized career path � except a 4-star U.S. Navy Admiral�s son!

So McCain was made a pilot because his father was a 4-star U.S. Navy admiral. John McCain was such a bad pilot that he crashed 5 fighter planes because of his poor pilot skills. John McCain�s first plane crash was during a training flight in 1958 when he plunged into Corpus Christi Bay while trying to land. The Navy ignored the crash and graduated McCain in 1960.

While deployed in the Mediterranean, the hard partying drinking John McCain lost a second aircraft "Flying too low over the Iberian Peninsula, he took out some power lines which led to a spate of newspaper stories in which he was predictably identified as the son of an admiral..."

Flight instructor John McCain lost a third aircraft while flying a Navy trainer solo to Philadelphia for an Army-Navy football game. McCain radioed, "I've got a flameout" before ejecting at one thousand feet. McCain parachuted onto a beach moments before his plane slammed into a clump of trees.

The Navy dismissed the crash as "unavoidable" and assigned McCain to the aircraft carrier USS Forrestal in December 1966, which was patrolling the Mediterranean Sea and Atlantic Ocean. In Spring 1967, the U.S.S Forrestal was assigned to join the Operation Rolling Thunder bombing campaign against North Vietnam.

John McCain lost his fourth plane on board the U.S. Forrestal on July 29, 1967 when a rocket inadvertently slammed into his bomb laden jet caused by John Mccain�s negligence in wet starting his jet. John McCain escaped, but the explosions that followed killed innocent 134 sailors. John McCain was transferred from the badly damaged U.S.S Forrestal to the USS Oriskany. On Oct. 26, 1967, John McCain was shot down over Hanoi North Vietnam bombing a power plant and captured by the Vietnamese.
