CONVENTION OPEN THREAD.... The third night of the Democratic convention is well underway, and we've seen a pretty steady emphasis on national security concerns. Patrick Murphy sounded great, Evan Bayh was livelier than I'd ever seen him, and Jack Reed was one of the convention's more earnest speakers.

But do you know who was really good? CSM Michele S. Jones, the first female command sergeant major of the U.S. Army. Note to Dems: get her in front of more cameras.

Coming up, obviously, is Bill Clinton's much-anticipated speech, and Joe Biden's big speech in the 10pm (eastern) hour. I should also note that I got a peek at John Kerry's speech, and it looks like it's going to be a real stemwinder. Don't miss it.

I thought I'd open the floor to some convention-related discussion. How's it going? How does tonight compare with the previous nights? Which news outlets are screwing up the coverage of the convention most? Favorite moments?

The floor is yours.

Well tonight is sure going to shut up those who complained about Mccain getting a pass.
And the message seems to start poring through : Obama is the future and Mccain is the past.
I am seeing a few journalists picking up on it.

If BIll delivers what they leaked he will, this is going to be a great crescendo from Monday to today with hopefully an amazing tomorrow to blow everything out of the water

"Actually, that makes 18 million of us..."

Great line, Bill!

When told that the DNC is insisting on a five second tape delay during Bill Clinton's speech tonight in case he says something inappropriate,
Clinton said, "I didn't know about that but it sounds like those motherfuckers."

Joke stolen from Borowitz.

I love good speech.

Yeah... finally... domestic strength and security tied to national security and strength abroad. Hammer that home.

Clinton's doing well so far. The long standing ovation for him was a nice touch, and a show that the "party divided" thing is just a media creation.

The line about America being strongest when we lead with the power of our example rather than the example of our power was pretty nice.

THIS is why we loved Bill Clinton. THIS is the American Dream. THIS is the man who led us to greatness. THIS is a reminder of what made America great and how badly the GOP has screwed the pooch in a mere eight years.

Excellent. BRAVO!

BUT I just read that he won't be at Obama's acceptance speech tomorrow. What the heck?

Posted by: Hannah on August 27, 2008 at 9:31 PM | PERMALINK

I loved the "power of our example" line, and he ended where I knew he had to - about his success despite being called too inexperienced. In general, however, while he did well and did what was needed, Hillary gave a much better speech.

Of course, I deducted many points for him affirming that McCain is a Maverick. sheesh. they guy called your then-teenaged daughter ugly and you still insist he's a decent guy?

anyway, ny real complaint is with that gawd-awful band and even worse singers and even worse set list. Who lets them play "Chain of Fools," about a woman catching onto the fact that her man is cheating on her, as a lead in for Bill? Is anyone overseeing this thing?

Posted by: zeitgeist on August 27, 2008 at 9:34 PM | PERMALINK

Oh my god, Kerry is a lousy speaker. What were we thinking four years ago? Obama is so much better. Can't wait for the speech at Mile High.

Kerry's on a roll too.

For it b4 you are against it.

B4 McCain debates Obama, McCain needs to finish the debate with himself.

Posted by: TCG on August 27, 2008 at 9:39 PM | PERMALINK

Bill did a great job. He did some of what Hillary should have done last night-- say that Obama is ready to lead.

Better late than never.

Kerry is doing a good job, too. In 2004 he had to win me over, but he more than exceeded my expectations (even though he lost, something I put at the feet of the Swiftboaters, not him).

OOOOO!!!! "John McCain needs to finish the debate with himself." Ha!!!

He is STEPPING TO JOHN MCCAIN.

Joanne

See What Dukakis said today:

"I owe the American people an apology"

“If I had beaten the old man you’d of never heard of the kid and you wouldn’t be in this mess. So it’s all my fault and I feel that very, very strongly.”

Well, he most likely is correct. Had he won in 1988, the half-witted son of George Senior would most likely be running his fifth or sixth family-friend’s business into the ground or perhaps selling used cars somewhere in West Texas these days.

Posted by: TCG on August 27, 2008 at 9:46 PM | PERMALINK

Glad I watched. Seeing Dukakis take down Hannity was great.

He had a great line today: It's my fault for the state of our country. Had I won, we never would have had heard of this kid who is presient. He said Bush is the worst president he ever lived under. And he shut Hannity up at every point.

I almost needed a smoke after watching him fuck Hannity!

OK, I'll admit that Bill's speech got better when he cited the failings of the administration, but I really never got the impression that he was completely behind Obama as CIC--much in contrast to John Kerry's impassioned support, which totally surprised me.

Nice bio about Biden. Obama: "He's the salt of the earth"--great soundbite, and the pictures with his kids--real tear-jerkers. Love Obama's endorsement of his foreign policy credentials and all the pictures with world leaders.

Another tear-jerker: Beau's introduction, which had me reaching for a Kleenex. This must be his son who's about to ship out to Iraq. Good job at positioning Biden as Beltway "fringer" rather than insider: kids' birthday parties instead of fancy cocktail parties, and excellent recounting of Biden's record of anti-violence legislation.

Another fine presentation. Loved that Biden hit McCain on so many wrong decisions -- compare that to McCain hitting Obama on one issue -- the "surge"-- over and over and over.

Considering Fox was providing the feed, I was surprised the camera caught so many telling images of Michele Obama. Her tears during Biden's son's telling of the accident -- a story she must have heard many times by now -- and the joy on her face when Biden's wife met him on stage. Priceless.

Joe Biden is being dishonest on energy. Either that or he does not understand the problem. The Democratic platform he forwarded is biofuel (a net energy user), and wind/solar. Wind/solar can only power 25% of the electric grid because of its intermittent nature.

We need to generate more steady state electricity and pursue methods to apply it to our transportation needs. This should include new coal and nuclear power plants to generate the electricity. Electric railroads and fuel cells need to be pursued to transform electricity to motive force.

This is the only realistic way to divorce ourselves from oil.

I feel no need to send more troops to Afghanistan or rebuild Georgia. I believe that our only presence in that part of the world should be an isolated military footprint in Iraq. This would protect the Iraqis from the Russians, as well as protect our access to a large oil reserve.

A ray of hope tonight. I was so down on this convention until now. I actually thought Beau Biden's intro was the highlight.

I hope, as some have speculated above, that this leads to a real assault on McCain. I heard a rumor that McCain was considering Texas Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison as VP. She's a freakin' idiot, so I hope he does. I guess Romney would be the worst pick from the Dems' perspective, but even he is an easy target to take down.

Considering how little McCain thinks of women, a token female on his ticket would make sense. Try to get the female vote and relegate the veep role to a 2nd first lady position: weddings and funerals. They can do tea and cookies at the WH daily.

Fuinny that the first female veep would be the most regressive step imaginable.

Quinn,

It's a little hard to follow, but from what I've read of both the Democrat's and Republican's nomination rules, they can't pick someone outside of their party, at least not without jumping through impossible hurdles.

So the Lieberman dream (nightmare?) will never come to fruition.

When Biden was talking about his Mom, that was really touching. Made me want to go call my Mom, but then we'd talk about politics, and that would just get ugly. I love my Mom so much, I didn't call her.

The 25% wind/solar comes from Denmark’s experience. Denmark has 15% wind and is now starting to have problems, because, sometimes the wind stops. Sometimes for days at a time. Modern economies cannot have part-time electricity. The ice cream melts among other things. T. Boone Pickens is claiming 20% can be supplied by wind.

T. Boone has invested $2 billion in wind farms and wants the government to provide for him transmission easements via eminent domain. He stands to make $20,000/hr in subsidies if the $0.019/kW-hr benefit is extended past December 31st. The easements would be worth much more. Thus the commercials. I support T. Boone since he is being honest about the 20%. An extra 5% over what Denmark achieves is a realistic assumption as our windmills would be spread over a wider region.

Solar might be able to add another 5% on top of that. Thus 25%.

This is a serious problem. We need to face it honestly. Neither the Republics nor the Democrats are being forthright on energy.

Posted by: Brick Oven Bill on August 28, 2008 at 12:13 AM | PERMALINK

Steve: "I should also note that I got a peek at John Kerry's speech, and it looks like it's going to be a real stemwinder. Don't miss it."

Oh, please, Mary! The only stem that's winding through John Kerry has half-inch thorns and is embedded up his ass, which accounts for both his rigid posture and terminally-pained expression.

Neither the Republics nor the Democrats are being forthright on energy. -- Brick Oven Bill

Okay, but America can't handle the truth. See opinion poll shifts re offshore drilling since the spring/summer gas price hikes. Or, look up what happened to Carter's warnings about energy dependence. What did those get us? "Morning in America" and the "Shining City on the Hill" and the Reagan Revolution that we're still suffering today.

Given a choice, I'll go with the Dems to move us in the right direction. How far we go depends on many factors, not the least of which will be the public's willingness to go along.

The truth used to be “iron and coke, chromium steel” beep. Today it is Uranium.

Posted by: Brick Oven Bill on August 28, 2008 at 1:41 AM | PERMALINK

Don't forget, T. Boone Pickens was formerly an oil man. And he plans to invest $10 Billion in the world's largest wind farm, AND it's projected to be built in the dark heart of America's oil boom - West Texas.

The number of oil and gas exploration permits issued on federal land in the United States doubled in the last 5 years - with no effect whatever on supply or prices.

Energy collected by either solar or wind power can be stored in collectors for metered use; the notion that the wind has to be blowing in order to use wind power is nonsense. New plans propose placing orbital solar collectors in space, where they are unaffected by cloud cover.

The current energy monopoly is anxious to keep North America dependent on oil. Demonizing clean energy as the pie-in-the-sky fantasies of enviro-whackos is a simple game plan that has served them well for years, and continues to work. It's so easy to depict environmentalists as nuts who want everybody to live in houses made of sods, and learn to eat grass. And there are plenty of room-temperature-IQ dolts happy to believe it.

It staggers the imagination that the same people who wail over the death of American innovation and know-how are so resistant to seeing it turned in this direction.

Not to rain on the parade, but there is some very sad news this evening. The Democratic party lost one of its great activists for social justice. Del Martin, lifelong fighter for LGBTQ rights, women's rights, a crusader against domestic violence, has died in San Francisco at the age of 87. Her lifelong partner and wife of two months, Phyllis Lyon, 83, was there to ease her passing.

Godspeed, Del.

The answer, Mark, is nuclear power. We've already figured it out.

Posted by: Brick Oven Bill on August 28, 2008 at 2:05 AM | PERMALINK

Nuclear power is not clean energy, nor is it renewable. If the connection between nuclear power and cheap electricity is so easy for you to make, why is it such a scary proposition if the Iranians have it?

Crooks & Liars has a great video up re McCain's campaign staff/lobbyists:

I thought it was fantastic. Bill Clinton was great. So was Kerry. So was Biden (and what a nice guy he seems to be).

I was proud that these were Democrats.

And good lord... who is McCain gonna pick? Lieberman? AARGH. Don't think there is going to be any appeal to that. They'll say he has experience.. uh.. as what? A Dem who is really a Repub? And he is pro choice so the base won't like it. and being Jewish isn't exactly an asset in the campaign.

I hope that the rumor g. powell cites is correct, that Kay Bailey Hutchison will be McCain's VP choice. The prom queen for Big Oil who has been one of the shrub's unwavering apologists . . . could we possibly be so lucky?

The whining over the fallibilities of wind and solar are absolutely comical!

First off, no one is going to argue that wind energy is a permanent, 100% solution to the energy crisis. There will be times when the wind does not blow at all; other times when it blows too little, and still other times when it blows so hard that it'll rip up the gear boxes and motor bearings in the shaft-pods. But if a community can produce 15% of its needs via wind-turbine technology, then that represents a reduction of 15% in our addiction to the narcotics of oil and coal.

Secondly, current 'type-2" solar technology allows the collection of energy from "passive" sunlight. The sun is still shining on the other side of the clouds; the rain; the fog; the snow---so the collector system still absorbs the energy for storage and consumption. That collector system no longer consists of unwieldy panels of glass and steel; the material is both lightweight and flexible, and comes in both roll-form and shingle-type---in some cases weighing less than a layer of shingles on a rooftop.

Now, if you want to create a "stimulus package," here's the deal---don't start mailing checks all helter skelter to people; all that happens is it winds up in gas tanks oil company profit coffers. Pick one house in every neighborhood, retrofit that house with total insulation, new doors and windows, full electric, and full solar. Total costs for one house would probably be about $25000 to $30,000.

Don't reach for the fainting couch (or the "feigning" couch, if your one of those nasty little McCain troglodytes) just yet---read on. There is a light at the end of this particular tunnel.

The end result is a home that's now going to generate the bulk of its own energy needs, with any surplus rolling back into the grid, offsetting a nice chunk of the energy needs that are caused by the sun setting every evening. Is it a total cure? Again, no---but in reality-based thinking, it's a lot more than the 5% figure that's being peddled

Example---a house that can generate 100% of its daytime energy needs if everything is turned on is a house that can sock unused energy into storage batteries for later consumption in the evening, and you don't need to have everything turned on all night long. Equate the cost savings to the family living in that house---no expenditures on gas, propane, heating oil, and electric---to additional funds freed up for spending back into the general economy. That's probably around $150 per month in the summer to $450 per month in the winter. Average it out, and you get about $300 per month on average, which is $3600 per year, which is $72,000 over the expected 20-year lifespan of a Type-2 solar package.

Remember that $25-to-$30 grand we had our dear Uncle Sammie lay out on this one house a couple of paragraphs ago? We just paid for it---and there's more than $40,000 to spare after it's all said and done, which breaks down to more than $2,000 per year over that 20-year span.

$2,000---I don't know anyone who got that much stimulus from the government.

Well, maybe the oil companies....

Kerry said all the right things, even some clever ones. But he has absolutely no speaking talent. Give him the best material available and he'll still make it sound mediocre. I hope I'm in the minority in thinking this.

Switching OT for a moment -- I took a brief look at The Corner for a good laugh. Apart from making Stanley Kurtz their newest martyr (the poor dears, the world is always against them,) it amazes me how they seem to live in a parallel universe where their president hasn't been a complete and utter failure for almost eight years.

Are the Republicans preparing for next week's convention aware that their president's approval ratings struggle to get above 30%? Their righteous, arrogant attitude seems to indicate not. I suppose the ratings-driven polls ("oooh, it's close, gonna be too close to call up to election night") gives them hope & allows them to ignore reality.

If I believed in god I'd be praying to be able to see the look on their smug faces if they don't manage to steal this election. Actually, I guess I'd be praying that they don't steal the election. Then I can bother with having the smug punched off their ugly mugs. Please god, who probably doesn't exist.

And yes, Tom Brokaw is a douche. God forbid you criticize John McCain. He was a POW, you know.

This doddering old fool needs to be put back out to pasture before he becomes Jim McKay at his last Olympics (which was sad, Brokaw is just embarrassing.)

He's not even "there" enough to disguise his enthusiasm for the right any more. The first four things out of his gizzard tonight were all criticisms of Biden or obvious directions to his worshipping NBC minions to tamp down any enthusiasm they might be tempted to express for Biden's speech.

I guess we can't expect much more from the man who's taken his marching orders direct from GE for lo these many years now.

We have all allowed the MSM to become entranced with their own ability to analyze and proclaim the TRUTH of what people actually say! It's all about C-span...believe me your BP will be better and you'll be able to engage your OWN BRAIN and smile!

Yes, you've mentioned numerous times now that you're in a hotel this week with limited channels. But most of the people bitching about the horrendous coverage are not.

"Stemwinder" refers to a long, tedious speech: you've set there so long you have to keep winding your watch.(Once, long ago, people had to wind a spring in their timepieces to keep them running.) It's a wonderful word because it's a perfect image of bored exasperation. How it has come to mean "rousing speech" is a mystery. Maybe boring politicos worked on it.

Anybody have a link to a video of CMS Michelle S. Jones' speech? I missed it and have been searching for a link all morning. Thanks!

I also was impressed by how good Tammy Duckworth was.

Although my emotional favorite is still Brian Schweitzer.
